About
To arrange a visit on a different day and time, please contact the museum. Don't be put off by the name 'museum', this is not a sterile exhibition of dusty artefacts but a carefully restored Cycladic olive mill. The attention to detail in the restoration is incredible and this alongside a video presentation and a personal talk by the owner make this a really special and informative experience. It is the best preserved animal powered old olive mill in Andros island. The mill was restored and transformed into museum, in order to offer to every visitor, regardless of age, the option to come close to the underling culture of the valuable product and to get familiar with the old traditional techniques of olive oil production as well. Besides they can see the traditional technics of constructing buildings in Cyclades through the centuries.

This remarkable visit gave a touching and informative view into the production of one of the most important commodities of the area. Dimitrius has a strong personal connection to this 'working' press, a story that he tells with humour and knowledge. You get an insight into not only the process but the character of the entire area. Not to be missed!
Entry is by donation with no pressure at all, but cash only so bring enough. I would gladly have given more if I had the cash on me!!
Bring a mask as at the moment Dimitrius asks you to respect the wearing of one as it is a small area in each room.
Thank you so much Dimitrius for sharing this. :)

One of our best experiences on our visit to Andros. A personal, informative, and entertaining presentation, takes about an hour. Dmitri, our host / docent, is from the family that owned this olive press that had been abandoned and then restored (by him). He explained the age-old process of extracting olive oil from olives, showed and demonstrated the equipment used and clever practical techniques used to make olive oil, starting from the centuries old human powered method to slight modifications until the late 1900's. Surprisingly little has changed. We also enjoyed the short and fun video. Now we understand why we prefer cold-press extra virgin olive oil. If you are in Greece and are at all curious about how the ever-present olive oil is made, this is worth a visit!

It is well worth the time to stop in Pitrofos village for a visit to the olive oil museum there. Mr. Dimitris Chemlis has gone to great effort and done an amazing job to restore an olive oil mill in the village of his ancestors. The restored building is beautiful and is full of interesting exhibits about olive oil and local history. Mr. Demetris also gives an informative tour of the mill. You should definitely make this a stop while visiting Andros. Pitrofos village is on the way from Batsi to Chora and is easy to find.

It is great pleasure for me to learn that you were satisfied both of the reconstruction of the 400 years old stone building and the guided tour. This building was always olive mill with the millman's house upstairs. Thank you very much and hope to welcome you again in the future.

Mr. Dimitrios is a wonderful person. He explained everything patiently and showed us how the mill worked. We could even try the job with our own hands. The place is reconstructed with love and taste. Thank you for a great experience.

The Olive Museum is located outside of Hora up a winding mountain road to Apo Pitrofos. There are a few parking spaces on the road in front. The building has been beautifully restored by Dimitris Chelmis who is also a Civil Engineer. His well thought out presentation (given in both English and Greek) tells the story of the history and method of oil production in its various stages. At one point he even invited us to participate in one of the stages involving pushing a horizontal log in a circular motion in order to turn the press. The tour ends with a delightful video showing men and women from the village participating in the oil production process with the added bonus of the inclusion of Dimitri's mother and father. Overall, this is an experience that is unique and well worth the drive to reach it. There is no cost for admission but a donation is welcomed. Several interesting items are also available for purchase as desired.

The visit to the Cyclades Olive Museum was fantastic. Dimitris is a great speaker, and manages to keep your attention and entertain you while teaching you about the traditional ways to make olive oil... while letting you use some of the machinery. Really great experience!

The guide is really friendly and knows a lot about olives. The tour was done in a very interesting way, and the house was refurbished so that one actually thinks it's still 1960.

Thank you very much. We are glad that you felt the atmosphere of the 1960 which was the year that the olive mill stopped working after more than 400 years! In the year 2000 after the reconstruction of the ruin building it worked again for one day just to see again the proceedure coming alive.
