Portimão: Rambling In The West Algarve (Self-Guided)

Rambling in the West Algarve is an exciting Self-Guided walking tour in a walker’s paradise destination. The climate is perfect for hiking for most of the year, and the countryside teems with wildlife, bright coloured flowers, and picturesque villages. The coastline boosts impressive rock formations, cliffs, secluded beaches and amazing blue seascapes. The base of our tour is Portimão, on the banks of the river Arade, a town with a low-key and relaxed ambience. The adjoining Praia da Rocha is one of the most scenic and famous beach resorts in the Algarve.

Our first longstay in Lagos with Palmares as our main golf site. Increadible 27 holes, great conditions & variation. Staff made life so easy, great service. Even the Old clubhouse delivered great service. Perhaps open booking in advance, more than 48 hours.

My favourite golf course in Portugal though I haven’t played them all by any means. Scenic and sufficiently challenging without being brutal. Lunch in the clubhouse was good value. “Palmares toast” - basically cheese and egg on toast was really enjoyed and the rest of the party were satisfied with their lunch also.

I should have realized from the start that this was not the place to play. Having researched golf courses to play prior to my tour of Portugal, I chose here and booked an early tee time as my wife and I were driving up to Evora after golf. I printed and had the paper work and were rudely told on check in that I was late for my 8:18 tee time. It was 7:55 and they argued with me about the time that they had at 7:54. My paperwork was clear, 8:18! They then gave me my buggy rental which ended in a flat on hole 14. No big deal, I just walked the rest of the way. I was feeling good as I played the last 10 holes at 1 under... They then would not return my credit card as the driver head cover was left in the buggy cart (the one with the flat...). They would only return my card if I paid 20 more euros. The entire rental was 30 euros?!? I tried to reason with them that my 40 euro buggy rental didn't last, so lets call it a wash. Seemed reasonable enough to me, but not to them. I then offered to buy one of the basket full of club head covers they were selling for 2 euros right next to my feet at their desk Nope, also unreasonable to them. The course is average to above average at best. Despite being billed as right on the coastline, you would have to hit a John Daly drive to even sniff water. They need a severe crash course in customer service, from check in to check out. I will, however, give credit to the on course attendant/marshal. He was nice, cooperative, and attentive to our group. Also, if you're looking for a course to playin 4 hours or less, keep looking. It was very crowded for a 8:18 tee time on a Monday and super slow (5 hours to complete). I just left this course feeling like I got taken advantage of and treated unfairly and rudely. Because, well, I did...It shouldn't be like that.

A great golf course. The greens were in perfect condition, the ocean views were incomparable and the maintenance was great. Despite the bad weather it was a pleasure to play this beautiful course. The staff was very helpful, so was the caddy master. Highly recommended golf course. Belongs to the best in Portugal. I hope to return sometime soon, maybe this spring!

I played a round last week of November, very enjoyable, early bird special €75 including buggy. Staff very friendly, but there was a mix up where the lady said I could play as much golf as I wanted on the special leading me to book the early bird intending to play all 27 holes, but the starter told me this was wrong, it was only for 18 holes and besides, the Lagos course was closed for maintenance, not mentioned at all when I was booking. So, I played the beach (Praia) and Alvor 9's in lovely morning weather, a bit of wind got up by 10am. The beach 9 is clearly the highlight, with 4 lovely links style holes, followed by 2 weak par 4's which would otherwise merit this 9 holes getting 5 stars. The Alvor is more of a hilly mountain course, great variety and a good test, without the wow factor of the beachside holes. A buggy would be preferable, but not essential, for this 9, not needed at all for the beach 9. The courses and greens were in very good condition unlike some reviews posted in October-maybe the winter rain has helped. There is also good variety of length on the holes so you get to use a lot of your clubs. Overall I give it 4 stars but would give 4.5 if an option, my only gripe would be that with regular green fees exceeding €100, like the rest of the Algarve golf courses, it is normally overpriced.
