About
This half-moon-shaped Blue Flag beach in eastern Crete boasts fine, soft sand and warm, pristine waters and is one of the most popular beaches in the area. Here, you can go jet skiing, swim with fish, or rent a lounge chair and umbrella for a lazy day at the beach. To get to the beach, you can park at the top of the seafront cliffs and then walk down a flight of stairs. You'll find a bunch of snack bars above the beach, too. The beach is often a stop along day tours that include nearby sights like the Richtis Gorge, the ancient olive tree and the late Minoan settlement of Azorias. – Tripadvisor

- aimee33g23Essex, United Kingdom35 contributionsGorgeous worth a visitGorgeous beach! No problem with plastic/ rubbish - like some of the below reviews. Coming in October - it was still busy from 10am but no problem getting the beds etc. 28degrees in October! It was beautiful. With paying 20 euros for sunbed/ umbrella etc.Dear aimee33g23, Thank you for your visit! - Nuha K 56Valparaiso, Indiana1,013 contributionsThe Blueish beachBeautiful large beach. Lots of fun waves. A bit dirty from bedrees. The beach is very shallow even with the waves coming -that was wonderful- Tent for 20€ and they serve cold drinks upon ordering but you can bring your own. There is parking and also up by the road. It's an hour from Irakleo, but beautiful road scenery. There is a small cafe on top of the beach for sandwiches and ice cream. And toilets and changing rooms. We enjoyed swinging with the waves. Crowded at 12 pm. Go early because by 11 am all the tents are gone and people started to wait for others to leave.Dear Nuhar, Thank you for taking the time to write your review and for your valuable feedback. We’re glad you enjoyed the waves and amenities! We are actively working on improving beach cleanliness to enhance your experience. Your tips about arriving early are valuable for future visitors. - H D2 contributionsBeautiful beach great for a late afternoon visitWater was lovely and clear, warm, with sandy bottom and fun waves. Crystal clear water and very clean on the day we went. We visited past 4 o clock when it was still 30 degrees and the beach was clearing of visitors, so it wasn't too crowded. You get the sun on the beach all the way into the eve as doesn't disappear behind mountains on this side of the peninsula. - Christopher BBirmingham, United Kingdom5 contributionsNice sandy beach but watch out for plastic. This beach is located in a nice small village, easily accessible if a little hilly. The beach itself is beautiful and sandy but unfortunately there is a significant amount of plastic in certain areas floating in the water. we found that we were fighting off plastic strips and looking into the water it is simply floating everywhere. Parasols are also quite pricy at 25 euros, which considering others around is quite a lot. Almyros beach is just 10 euros. Personally I would go the extra distance and head to something like Vai beach which has some more established facilities, or Almyros beach which is close to VoulismaDear Christopher, Thank you for taking the time to write your review. We do our best to manage the microplastics that enter the water with the sea currents. Our crew tries to collect as much as possible, but the problem remains even when the currents change and the sea becomes crystal clear. We are trying to keep our beaches clean and our waters clean too, trying to manage as best we can the scourge of microplastics that is affecting the Mediterranean. We can recommend you to visit the beaches of Karavostasi & Agios Panteleimon.Written 10 July 2024This response is the subjective opinion of the management representative and not of Tripadvisor LLC.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 2 July 2024

- Lora MAmsterdam, The Netherlands57 contributionsGreat views/snorkeling, lots of plastic in the waterWe were recommended this beach by our nearby Airbnb hostess and it was really stunning. We went twice and both times managed to get sun beds. From the left side (facing the beach and past Macrame), there are some rocks that you can easily snorkel around, even with your kids. I thought this was a perfect place for children to snorkel if the water is calm and a great way to introduce them to it. I’ve shared a photo pointing to the location. The only major disappointment is that there is a LOT of plastic floating around. Even others were complaining about this. I found the beach itself to be clean, but was so surprised about the water because it’s so clear. I collected what was in my hand with 5 minutes of swimming. If people went out with small fishing nets, they would unfortunately catch a lot. I haven’t noticed any recycling in Crete and I find that amazing with all of the water bottle consumption. Maybe a start would be at the beautiful beach,Dear Lora, Thank you for your wonderful feedback! We’re thrilled to hear that you enjoyed the beach and the snorkeling opportunities, and that you found the beach itself clean. It’s great to know that you and your family had a memorable time. - Yosamos30 contributionsWow!!!This is one of the most beautiful beaches one can find. The water is turquoise, blue, green, you name it. It’s a full pallet of colors. The services on the beach are fine as in others, renting two chairs and an umbrella for €25 and service that includes drinks and food. Clean toilets. I’ve read 2 critics here. One about the beach being crowded. Well, this goes without saying that such a beautiful beach will be crowded at the peak of the season or during weekends. We visited off peak, at the end of August on a Wednesday and it was perfectly fine. Of course there were many people, but it was not crowded.. I can imagine it being super crowded on peak season or during weekends so you might want to avoid that. As far as the water being dirty with plastic, I didn’t really see that, the water was pretty clean. Perfect area for snorkeling water sports available as well. The fact that this is a public beach and yet someone is responding to all the reviews just shows how much the locals care about this beach. And while you are reading this review Mr. local, I have one advice for you. I think you should stop handing out drinking straws wrapped in plastic. People throw away that plastic and that’s a major source of pollution. Just give the straws unwrapped.Hi Yosamos, Thank you for your detailed and thoughtful review! 🌟 We’re thrilled to hear that you found the beach to be one of the most beautiful you’ve encountered, with its stunning array of colors and pristine waters. We’re glad you enjoyed the services and found the facilities, including clean toilets, up to standard. We appreciate your understanding regarding the crowd levels and are pleased to hear your experience was enjoyable during the off-peak period. Your feedback about the plastic straws is invaluable and will be taken into consideration to help further reduce environmental impact. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and for your constructive suggestion. It’s clear that you care deeply about this wonderful beach, and we do too. We arrived after our visit to Spinalonga so early afternoon. There were no loungers available, so we decided on the private beach club right there. It wasn’t overly expensive and we were able to enjoy the beach in comfort. Highly recommend a visit to enjoy this beautiful beach.Hi Hygienist83, sounds like a great experience! The sunbeds and umbrellas are expensive for the quality of service provided. The food was at the same level of the beach itself. Something clearly to improve.Dear RMRodrigues69, Thank you for sharing your thoughts about your visit to Voulisma Beach. We are thrilled that you enjoyed the beautiful sand and crystal-clear, warm waters, and that the overall peaceful atmosphere contributed to your positive experience, despite the beach being busy. Many tourist guides rank Voulisma beach in Crete 's top ten but I disagree totally. Every inch of sand is occupied by sunbeds at 10 Eur, even in the tiny coves on the left (see pictures). Greed has turned a lovely, long beach of fine sand into a business where people who simply want to lay on the sand are not welcome.
To make matters worse, the first ten meters of water are invaded by plastic of all shapes and sizes, including some very tiny fragments. (Two pictures)
We went numerous times to the beach as it was across the road from our rental, and it seems absolutely nothing is done to tame the sunbed companies and very little to clean the beach or the water. We saw just one person one morning change the bag of the trash cans and another person sweep the sand with a brush, although the crowd limited what he could do.
On top of fine sand and crystal blue water, the beach is blessed with a very gradual slope, which would make it very safe for kids, but with that much plastic floating around, I wouldn't take young ones there.
Pity the local city or province does nothing to limit the sunbeds to a portion of the main stretch of sand and doesn't clean the shallow water with nets.
> Two tips: 1- favor the small coves on the far left (facing the sea) as water is less likely to be infested by plastic (it depends on the current, though) and a few stretches of sand remain in between sun beds.
2- come at 9am when the beach is empty, use the sun bed and leave at 11:30 when the owner of the sun beds starts collecting the 10 eur fee (for two beds and one beach umbrella)

Dear Jmacq92,
Thank you for your review and for taking the time for writing it down. Voulisma is one of the most popular beaches in Agios Nikoloas due to it being well equipped and organized. So it gets more crowded in high-season months. As there are lots of selections regarding beaches and swimming in Agios Nikolaos we hope you found your kind of beach. Karavostasi and Agios Panteleimonas are close by, more secluded and definitely deserve a shot.
We do our best to manage the microplastics that come in the gulf with sea currents. Our crew is trying to gather as much as possible but the problem persists, even when the currents change and the sea becomes crystal clear. We strive to keep our beaches clean and our waters too, trying to manage the best we can the microplastics plague that hit the Mediterranean. We hope something drastic happens soon. Thank you again for your review!!

Amazon Bach, took us 1 hour driving to get there, and we visited the beach twice in our 1 week holiday.
Spectacular clear blue water, great sunbed service, not cheap, 15€ for two sunbeds and parasol, but for half worth it.
Beach Bar with nice food, toillets and changing rooms, food and drinks can be served on the sunbeds. Get ready to stay all day and enjoy the beach.

Get there in time, lets say before 10 am, otherwise no place guaranteed. Clear water, nice colours, cliffs are around. Sandy beach, in the narrow part there are bigger pebbles, but not in the water.
Reliable waitresses offer refreshments and dishes, not high price.

A little intimidated by the reviews that revealed micro plastics, we still decided to give it a try and I must say that it went well. We didn't find any in or out of the water! I don't know if their presence depends on the currents or not but this beach is worth a visit! Umbrella and two sunbeds for 10 euros. However, I recommend not arriving too late because availability is limited.

An extraordinarily beautiful beach, very clean water - crystal clear, azure blue, very fine and clean sandy beach, smooth entry into the water, I recommend it to families with children. You can use deckchairs (10 euros a pair with an umbrella) or you can sit on a towel. There is a bar on the beach, restaurants are nearby.

One of the best sandy beaches on Crete and certainly in Eastern Crete. It has a long sandy beach with plenty of sunbeds. There is a lifeguard and when it is windy the waves do get large. Sunbeds are reasonably price - 10 euros per set. You can order drinks and food from the beach or walk up to the cafe on the cliff.

The beach was truly stunning with crystal clear water and ample space. To use the sun bed it costs 10 euros for two people however it is free to bring your own towel and lay on the sand which is what we did. If you fancy a drink the bar is really nice with most cocktails costing 8 euros. They also have fruit and other options for food. If you enjoy water sports there are kayaks, jet skis and more that you can rent for an affordable price.
My only complaint is that occasionally there is a lot of plastic in the sea but this is usually gone by the afternoon and only happened twice out of the 9 days we were there so I don't see it as a huge issue.

Fantastic (but already extremely crowded at 12:00) one day, golden bay with crystal clear swimming pool water, warm, and hardly any waves, wonderful water, Caribbean beautiful - but the next day chopped plastic, despite (actual) “Blue Flag” certification...
So let me ask Greece: Like Phoenix, you have risen from the ashes of the financial crisis to become one of the most successful and innovative countries in Europe, thanks to creativity and hard work, including tourism - now, perhaps together with the other Mediterranean countries, you should tackle plastic pollution in the Mediterranean...
Where does the microplastics in the sea come from - agriculture, open bins, dumps, ships?
In Singapore, you pay hundreds of dollars in fines for throwing away every tiny bit of garbage, and the frappé tastes good in the reusable cup (which could be returned anywhere) - there are solutions!
Nature like yours is worth protecting...
Why is there every drink in a plastic cup, often still with plastic straw (actually now banned in the EU), and thin plastic bags everywhere for free (ditto), why do the garbage cans always stand up (please neuter the cats instead of sending dumpster diving, then there are not always more of them)?
I know that we Germans definitely have to work much, much harder to fight pollution, but you admittedly have the more welcoming nature and tourism...

Voulisma beach was absolutely stunning. We got the bus there from Agios Nikolaos, which was relatively easy - and VERY affordable. The sun beds ranged from €10-15. The only negative was that the beach was quite busy and touristy.
We had lunch at “Taverna Panorama” (as seen in last pics) which was just above the beach. It was affordable, and the staff were incredibly friendly - you could tell it was a family run restaurant. It was defiantly worth the visit, and the portion sizes were good too!
