Overview

The large gate, named picturesquely Porta Caesarea for its monumentality, was located in the eastern walls of the initial town, the Dyggve's urbs vetus. Both the gate and the walls next to it are evidently old. They could have been built at the beginning of the first century A.D., i.e. in the last years of August's rule.

The former main city gate would be very impressive if it were still standing. Unfortunately the arch is no longer in existence and it follows that the fortified parts above it have crumbled as well. The pedestrian side gates made it though and there is...More

There's not much left of the porta caesarea. This is located in the southern part of the Salona Ruins and is part of the admission for that. It would be easy to miss as it's down a road past some fields. But the way is...More

You should spend a day or an afternoon in this Roman complex. It is not very popular, but nobody should miss it. I think Croatians should make it more public.
