In 1884, Muḥammad Aḥmad, "the Mahdi", made his military headquarters in the village of Omdurman. the Mahdi's successor, Khalifa ʻAbdullahi ibn Muḥammad, made Omdurman his capital.The city, now the location of the tomb of the Mahdi.

It is true that you cannot go inside and the exterior wall prevents you from seeing the whole building. But if you are going to Khalifa House, you will see it anyhow. It is a pretty building with varios domes.

Entirely rebuilt after the British army razed it to the ground. Can be visited only from the outside and it has a symbolic value mostly for the historical and political importance of the person who is buried there than for architectural peculiarities. The tomb still...More
