The Old School has a unique history dating back to the 17th Century and is situated in the honeypot village of Muker in Swaledale. The village is arguably the most popular tourist destination in the Dale, both for UK and foreign visitors. It is located on the Coast to Coast route and the Pennine Way and is supported by a good cross section businesses including a village shop, the famous Swaledale. We have a gift shop to suit all purses, an Art Gallery and a newly opened Coffee Shop leading onto a beautiful walled garden

A welcome refuge in the middle of a walk

This is a very welcome stopping point when walking in Swaledale. Good coffee and an interesting gallery. Dogs allowed as well.

It was a pleasant surprise to find owners, Barbara and Jon, were parents of pupils Paul had taught in the past. They couldn't have been more welcoming. We thoroughly recommend tea, cake and birdwatching in their tearoom with a garden view. There's also a well-chosen selection of quality local photographs, paintings and other crafts. We bought a wonderful card by... More

Thanks very much for taking the time to write your lovely review. It is strange who walks in our shop - connections from the past - some very tenuous!!!! I am glad you found The Old School welcoming and we look forward to seeing you both again in the near future Barbara and Jon More

Excellent cakes and coffee, easily found by the ram on the roof! A welcome oasis whilst cycling on a very hot day. Two visits 15 years apart, both superb

Popped in to have a browse, bought a couple of things in the gift shop but found the gallery quite expensive for our tastes. The coffee shop and cakes looked great but we didn't have any so I can't comment on the taste. Worth a visit though.

Always a warm welcome an interesting gift shop and art gallery. Some wonderful watercolour originals and limited edition prints for sale. The tea and scones were wonderful. A shame it was too rainy for sitting in the garden

I was a bit worried about going on a rather challenging walk with my 82 year old father and autistic son, but the lovely chap who runs this gallery/cafe not only served excellent coffee but suggested a different walk to the one I was originally advised to do and we thoroughly enjoyed it. I travel around a lot and found... More

The absolute best coffee I had in my entire 6 weeks in UK. John very knowledgeable about the area and very happy to pass on his knowledge even though I guess he gets sick of people asking! Beautiful artwork and craftwork from local artists. Delightful!

It's like entering an Aladdin's cave of gorgeousness. They stock some local crafts and I was particularly impressed by some jewellery made with papier mache- I forgot to take note of the artist but will be popping back before we go home

Excellent service following a telephone conversation about 'Yorkshire Shepherdess' The Old School not only sent me a copy, but incredibly got it signed by the author for my Granddaughters' 21st Birthday. Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness and service which went above and beyond! As well as getting me brownie points with the granddaughter!!
