A wonderful stay with plenty to do, even on a rainy day
Oct 2017 • Family
We enjoyed a wonderful time out at the farm. We found plenty to do to keep our little ones entertained even in the rain. There is a great DIY zone with putt-putt golf, table tennis, a huge sand pit, bikes and kite making. We enjoyed wandering around the farm, meeting farm animals and the many beautiful butterflies. We stayed in the Yurts which was fun. The playground is one of the best I have seen in Shanghai and we would have made more use of it if the weather had obliged. We enjoyed delicious food and were grateful for the friendly hospitality. A great adventure!

Enjoyable short weekend getaway from Shanghai City
Jun 2017 • Family
Mahota Farm Chongming had exceeded our expectation. We enjoyed our weekend family getaway with our kids (2, 5 and 7 years old). We opted for the 2 days 1 night package which includes: one night stay at the Mongolian Yurts, breakfast for 2, hot pot for 2, farm tour, harvesting, planting, animal feeding and a DIY activities.
It was the best deal and experience especially staying in the Mongolian Yurt. My kids enjoyed the Yurt so much, it feels like we are staying in a cozy chalet with all the luxury of a hotel. It is air conditioned. It has modern bathroom with seated toilet, warm shower and a sink. There's shower gels, shampoo, comb, towels and hair dryer, also an electric kettle. The twin beds were combined together to make a king bed. We have to share a king bed as we would like to have some quality family time together and if we were to get another Yurt it will be a different experience.
We like having meals at Mahota because most ingredients are fresh from the farm. Breakfast was prepared for us (Chinese dim sums, hard boiled eggs and vegetables). We had the hot pot for lunch and we found it healthy and yummy that we decided to have the same the next day. The hot pot has varieties of vegetables (fresh from their farm), meat balls, fish and pork. We like the chillies cut sauce that came with it. The hot pot was a deal with the package but it is on the pricey side if ordered from their menu, especially with the small portion of meats and limited meat options. Pricey but you are getting healthy and quality food. We ordered some Chinese dishes for dinner, the dishes were tasty.
During our stay there, our kids weren't bored as there's a lot to do: farm tour, harvest and plant vegetables, a DIY activity and play at the outdoor playground. However, summer is not the best time to go as it is very hot. Hot weather makes our kids tired, sweaty and uncomfortable thus they didn't quite enjoy the outdoor activities. We are thinking of going back during fall or spring as there's other outdoor activities to do like biking. Also, our kids will enjoy seeing and feeding the animals - ducks, rabbits, chickens, pigs and sheep at the farm when the weather is pleasant. We didn't finish the tour but our kids were very happy playing in the Yurt. In the evening, they went to explore the outdoor playground. The new section of the outdoor playground is very nice, my kids like playing there. The next day, we harvested some rosemary, mint and a type of leafy vegetables. Then the kids did their DIY, paint their own straw hats and plant their own pot of rosemary or mint.
The staff there are extremely hospitable and friendly, they make us feel at home. We would like to thank Mr Gong who helped us with the reservation and he is also our farm guide, and activities organizer. He is friendly, patient, and very good with children.
If you are looking for a child friendly short getaway from Shanghai this is the place!!! The only thing that I could think of that needs some improvement is more thorough cleaning of the floor of the Yurt as it was quite dusty. However, the dusty floor won't stop us from returning to Mahota Farm since we could either wipe it ourselves or send a request for housekeeping. The hospitable staff will be happy to do so!

Farm Stay Fun!
Mar 2016 • Family
We visited Mahota Farm in March 2016. It was a little chilly but it didn't stop us from riding bikes, planting, feeding animals and fishing. We wanted a break from the city and wanted to give the children room to run around. There was some confusion when we arrived. Staff didn't seem to realize we were coming even though we had confirmed our reservation. But they were able to quickly get food ready for supper and the yurts warmed up quickly once the power was turned on. The food was great! Lots of fresh veggies, pork and fish for the hot pot. Breakfast was good too. But there was no coffee or hot tea so maybe bring your own.
The only other suggestion I would make is to pre-plan your transportation to the farm. We were told a taxi would be approximately $60 but ended being over $100. Since we needed two taxis we could have hired a driver for that price!

Great farm stay experience!
Mar 2016 • Family
We are 2 families who spent one night at Mahota Farms in Yurt 1 and 2. Although there was a mix up with the reservation and it seemed like the staff wasn't expecting us, they managed to provide us with an excellent stay. The yurts are very comfortable and even though the farm prides itself on being wifi free we were able to get access while in yurt 2. It was a cold day in March but we still made the most of bike rides, planting vegetables, visiting and feeding animals and fishing. It was a lot of fun and a nice break from the hustle and bustle of Shanghai. The food was excellent as well. The hot pot at dinner provided us with lots of food and options for our vegetarian in the group. Breakfast was also very yummy dim sum.

Our only complaint was we paid way too much for a taxi to the island. Our hotel in Shanghai suggested metered cabs and this was a mistake. We paid over $450 RMB each way and needed two cabs. At that price we could have had a driver and vehicle for 24 hours. Mahota Farms had told us the ride was around 300 RMB. We hadn't budgeted for the extra expense so we were upset about that. At $900 RMB round trip it's a pretty expensive outing.

Fun and fresh air outside the city
May 2015 • Family
Good place to visit for parents and friends with young children about an hour from the city of shanghai. Well landscaped gardens and grounds in a farm setting with extensive grounds, lots of animals to see at close quarters, a playground d and bikes to ride, for free. The overnight fee includes a hotpot dinner, a Chinese breakfast and kids eat free.
Our children 2 and 3 years old loved the animals, the green space, the picnic on the field, staying in the yurt, and the playground. The adults were not so keen on the fairly basic accommodation and having to share a bed with the children, the Chinese breakfast with no hot drinks at all. One of us didn't like the hotpot which had beautiful fresh veg but not very tasty pork or fish. There was plenty of it though.
Tips - take your own wine, tea and coffee, milk, and picnic.
Take mosquito repellent.
Kids can ride their own bikes on the many paths.
Go in spring or autumn, not summer.

Would be a great getaway if the service were up to par
May 2015 • Family
We wanted a night's getaway from Shanghai, so we took the kids out to the Mahota Farm in Chongming Island. The farm itself is really modern and seems well run, with many greenhouses, a lot of animals (apparently they have 2000+ pigs on the farm) and lots of green, thriving fields for you to walk past.

The service however, leaves much to be desired. My son had picked this particular farm to visit because he loved the brochure they gave us at their restaurant in the city (great hotpot by the way). They promised a weekend of activities like biking, feeding the animals, a farm tour, etc. So we were all set to have a busy day on the farm doing a lot of activities. To our disappointment, our farm tour turned out to be a rudimentary 15min stroll through areas that we had already visited. No new information from the guide, no opportunity to feed the animals, no explanations. Then he suggested that we get bikes to ride to the farther parts of the farm because "it was very far". He had to call for someone else to come open the equipment rental shed. When asked if the little kids could ride the bikes, he said, "should not be a problem". So, we left him to open the shed and took a potty break. When we returned, he had disappeared, leaving us to view the bikes ourselves. And we then discovered that the bikes were all adult size. There are tandem bikes, so you can ride with a bigger kid behind you. No seats for anyone small. And no smaller bikes for kids below 10-12ish, depending on how tall your kid is.

We ended up feeding the rabbits for an hour - we found the sheds and vegetables ourselves. Then the kids played in the playground and we finally went and asked if we could plant some vegetables. The receptionist took us to one of the greenhouses and gave us trowels and a tray of seedlings. You can then plant those and water them.

My kids ended up having a fun time, but I was very disappointed with the overall experience. It was not cheap. We paid more than 1,200RMB for one night with dinner. No coffee or tea for breakfast, so you'll have to bring your own. If you want lunch, you'll have to pre-order. They cannot cook to order, so you have to place your order the night before or in the morning and they DO NOT tell you this beforehand so you have to ask.

Rooms were very basic and not extremely clean. They only have double rooms, so if you need space for your kids, you'll need to book another room or bring sleeping bags like we did.

You also have to arrange your own transportation. It was 700RMB round-trip for us via pre-arranged taxi.

I would not return to the farm. I think there are other getaways that are better value.

Weekend Farm Stay
Nov 2014 • Friends
unique experience of a weekend stay at Mahota Farm Chongming, RMB 798 for 2 persons include overnight accommodation, steam boat, free and easy activities and breakfast. Opted for yurt which is nicely decorated and fitted with modern comforts such as western bathroom. It is a nice getaway from the city, given that it is a true blue farm, there's a weird fertilizer smell in the air and also files flying throughout, it is really not for those who prefers Hilton or Grand Hyatt. Free and easy activities include cycling, river fishing, animal feeding etc. At the end of stay, Mahota Farm gave out free organic vegetables as gifts. Overall, great experience!

Great farm to visit near Shanghai! Kids friendly! Stay in Yurts!
Oct 2014
We've been to the farm 4 times now with our 7 year old and 5 year old over the last 2 years with visitors. It's a great great place to come to escape the city life in Shanghai. If you stay in the Mongolian Yurts, it's an amazing experience for the kids. We told them we were going camping in a farm. And for me, I was delighted when I saw airconditioning and there's free wifi, attached bathroom and toilet and a flat screen TV! The cost of each yurt for a night is reasonable. And the cost includes a farm tour, rental of bicycles, and breakfast and a lovely and healthy hot pot dinner. You can even play table tennis and there's a playground in an open field great for kids to run around.

The kids favourite activity is to feed the animals in the farm and see the huge breeding pigs and piglets. They also love the tandem bicycles, which you can rent for free at the farm. You can also plant seedlings. There is a farm tour everyday at 10am and 2pm. They explain everything both in Chinese and in English.

You can hire a car and do a day trip to the farm if you don't wish to stay over. It takes about 2 hours drive from Shanghai Hongqiao airport.

Best time to visit the farm is in spring and autumn. Summer is too hot (and smelly!).

One-of-a-kind Experience
Mar 2014 • Business
Mahota runs other resorts throughout Asia. Uniquely, this one truly highlights eco-tourism and learning about how healthy organic farms produce veggies year-round, as well as eggs. They also relate this to personal health, serving extremely healthy foods. I traveled there as a scholar, and during the off-season. It was a highly satisfying adventure for me. Indeed, just seeing the bridge to Chongming Island and the island are very worthwhile. At Mahota, the sustainable architecture is very attractive, just as the farm fields are immaculately neat. I was able to get a bicycle to travel over the extensive farm area, and nearby. On the farm, there are signs everywhere in Chinese and English to explain what you're looking at. Elsewhere on Chongming there is no English not even very many street signs. In terms of staying overnight, it is an option and reasonable. Healthy meals are included. I was able to stay in one of their yurts overnight, and it was modest but quite comfortable even on a chilly night, and there was even reliable wi-fi. Only a handful of the staff here speak any English, but I still managed. You really do need a car to get there. But if you can arrange for the ride, it's worth a day visit and even staying overnight.
