Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

One of many fort locations around Tobago. Each has their own unique history, and the views are always magnificent. Tobago has such a unique and varied history, and I'm extremely lucky to have been able to visit!

Fort James origins date back from 1760s. British built a ‘guard house’ and barracks as early as 1764. Four years later permanent barracks were constructed and the fort was put in a better state of defense. Fort James site is well maintained by the Tourism bureau and it is possible to see the remains of the fortification made of low coral limestone and faced volcanic stone walls, with brick work at their corners. In the bastion shaped structure are present four cannons: two 18 pounder showing the Tudor double-rose; one 18 pounder and one 6 pounder marked GR (George Rex). Also present the Powder magazine and a brick furnace to heat the shot before firing from the muzzle-loading cannons, for the purpose of setting fire to enemy warship (French improved the old time-consuming method of heating round shot by covering in the coals of a large wood fire by using specially-constructed furnaces to heat shot in their artilleries). Fort James was captured by the French in 1781, retaken by the British in 1793, occupied by the French again in 1802 and captured by the British under Sir Samuel Hood in 1803.
Fort James is part of Eurochamtt Historical Itineraries at La Tartaruga, Buccoo Bay.

It was a nice little stop off on our tour. An interesting bit of history and pretty grounds. I saw pigeon peas growing here. That was a first. The building is made of coral reef stones. Was very beautiful.

First stop on the island tour with keinotwinisletours (contact via website) overlooking Courland Bay and the turtle nesting beach.
A very knowledgeable lady took us round the gardens and cannons explaining the history
Close to the mystery tombstone and well worth the visit

Named after James, Duke of Courland, Fort James is located in the quiet town of Plymouth which was established in 1760's by the British as a barracks. Overlooking Great Courland Bay, the remaining stone edifice and the four cannons sit on a well kept headland. The British army maintained a picket post here which in 1770 was attacked by rebellious slaves. In 1777 a four gun battery manned by the militia was erected to protect the shipping lanes in the Bay. In 1781 the Fort came under attack by the French who captured and occupied it until the island was recaptured by the British in 1793. The Fort is also located in close proximity to two other famous attractions in Plymouth: The Mystery Tomb of Betty Stiven; and the Courland Monument. Whilst here you might be lucky enough to see the Brown Herons diving for fish so look out for them across the bay.

The fort is a historic site with the prerequisite cannons and stone hut. As a scenic view across the bay and over the sea it is worth the drive or walk to the tip of Plymouth. An effort has been made to paint the benches and make a beautiful spot to sit or picnic. The trees were in bloom and it really was beautiful.
