    As good as the hype
Hvitserkur is a heavily promoted rock formation but is as grand as it seems in pictures. Well worth a visit but beware it requires a drive over unmade roads. It can be seen from a high viewing platform. The path down to Hvitserkur is steep and dangerous but there is another longer way via a nearby black sand beach which is interesting in its own right.

A half hour drive to a rock in the ocean :)
It is what it is, I suppose. Hvistserkur is basalt rock in Hunafloi Bay to check out about a half hour from Borgavirki. If you're wanting to check it out and have some time to travel down a gravel road, by all means it is an interesting site. If time is of the essence here, you're likely not going to miss a whole bunch. If this is of help to you making your decision, please consider a thanks :)

Worth going out of the way for.
We weren’t going to bother going to Hvítserkur, but in the end we made the effort and I’m extremely happy we did. Not only is the formation impressive, it’s both weird and wonderful. There’s also a large seal colony a short walk away along the beach towards the estuary. The main colony is across a stretch of water, but we were lucky enough to have several young pups playing about and doing full jumps out of the water before deep diving. One became inquisitive and swam to within about 15 meters from us to have a really good look.

For the effort it takes to get here along the rough and bumpy dirt roads, we did not feel like the rock formation was worth it. The pictures online make it seem grander than it is. Wouldn’t recommend unless this is your thing

A very uniquely shaped rock formation close to the shore. There are waking paths from the car park to overlook the formation and then also to go down to the black sand beach and get an eye level view. If you time it right, there can be nice views with the sunrise or sunset. However, it is at least a 30 minute drive from the Ring Road and depending on the time of the year, the road conditions may not be very good. Also, there is a steep hill from the unpaved road into the car park. If you prefer to stay on paved roads, this might not be the right stop for you.

This is definitely the worst "attraction" we visited in Iceland. It is overrated, simply a small piece of rock in the sea. Additionally, you have to take a dirt road to reach the place which takes you too much time that you can definitely spend better.

The road to the ocean was garbage. So many potholes. It took 35 minutes of driving on an awful road to get there. 5 minute walk to the viewing platform. The weather was cold and snowy so we didnt go down to the beach. So about 5 minutes of looking at the formation in the water, then the awful drive back out. We did not feel like this was worth it.

We found the rock outcropping unique but for us the best thing was seeing seals. After the visiting the rock, we head back to the parking lot and then south along the trail. Across the bay we saw a large colony of seals.

Even in october there is a lot of poeple.
The landscape is nice, you can choose the high or low tide, both are great. The most interesting thing is to speak with seals...if
you are lucky you can see some of them from the black beach below the point of view.

The road to this location is a bit rough. It's all dirt, but I thought it was well worth it! The trek down and be a bit scary, but with some good shoes you'll be fine. We spent about an hour here to walk around the beaches after the picture.

This is a 15-meter (49-foot) basalt rock formation on the waters off Vatnsnes Peninsula. By itself, it’s actually not much to look at, especially when seen from the beach. When combined with the surrounding areas as seen from high above the cliff, it makes for a poignant mark to an otherwise monotonous water landscape that is Hornafjörður Bay. During sunset or sunrise is perhaps the best time to see it. The varying colors of the sky and the equally changing hues of the waters add depth and character to Hvitserkur, which is said to resemble a dragon drinking.

How to get there (depends on where you’re coming from):
1) If you’re driving west along Hwy 1 (counter-clockwise on the Ring Road), turn right on Hwy 716 which is a hard packed dirt road. Drive 5.7 km (3.6 miles) and turn right on Hwy 711 which is also a hard packed dirt road. Drive about an additional 20 km (12.5 miles), passing a small rest area with some amenities like a tiny convenience store and restrooms/toilets, and turn right on the hard packed spur road. Follow it to the end which is a parking area.

2) If you’re driving east along Hwy 1 (clockwise on the Ring Road), turn left on Hwy 711, again a hard packed dirt road. Immediately, you’ll see an information board complete with a map of Vatnsnes Peninsula. Drive about 30 km (19 miles), passing Vesturhopsvatn Lake and Route 716 on your right, and turn right on the hard packed spur road. Follow it to the end which is a parking area.

From the parking area walk towards the obvious viewing area by the cliffs with panoramic views of Hornafjörður Bay and the distant mountains of Norðurland vestra’s largest peninsula. Alternatively, you go down by the beach where you’ll also have a chance to walk barefooted and feel the cold waters splashing on the black sandy shore.
