The former Cathar stronghold and les plus beaux village of Minerve is dramatically located in a ravine surrounded by gorges. It's a must visit when in the area, wonderful to stroll along the cobblestone lanes and pop into some of the shops. After exploring the village, we took the stairs down for the canyon, with natural tunnels bored through the cliffs - a very interesting experience too.

Le site cathare de Minerve (5*): Minerve is a little and Medieval village located in Occitaine Region, in the South of France. It is known as a Cathar site, where you can see a the remains of a wall of an old castle and a church and very nice views of a river. Also, walking in the streets is amazing: really it seems you are living in the Middle Ages. Shops, bars, restaurants or wineries there are also in this old town. It is possible to do some hikes close to the river to see some natural caves in the rock. Also, the best place to see fantastic views of the town is from the parking. Very recommendable.

Beautiful place to visit! Really nice old town. And beautiful caves.
Wear good walking shoes if you want to see everyting. There are a lot of rocky pathways.

It’s beautiful but everything is closed during Christmas time. We found a delicious crêperie. Certainly we’ll come back.

Pictures can't do this site justice. Absolutely gorgeous and terrifying! You can hike for hours if you walk--just bring sunscreen and a hat if it's high season. We were here in September and it was almost too hot.

We stopped here on our way to visit our friends and were blown away with the beauty of the area and the charm of this small town. Very romantic and challenging.

A charming village in the most beautiful position. As you approach by car you get views of the village perched on a cliff. The paid car park is a short downhill walk to village which takes in even more spectacular views. A peaceful place of narrow streets and old buildings. Some ruins from the cathar days too. Walk around the outside below the village along the dry river bed to see just how the building hang out of the cliff side. A few shops and places to eat. Apart from a few up/down hills fairly easy walking.

This place is one of the best in the Occitanie for scenery and a sense of history. The absense of cars is very welcome, and there is well-signposted ample parking 200 metres from the heart of the village.

Wow. This place is stunning. Go and take a visit.

The windy road up the side of a steep mountain is very much worth the drive. We parked at the first car park - before the bridge and turn left (not the one signed to the centre of the village). It was busy but we found a spot. Then only a short walk down a steep track to the town. People have said on here that they struggled with the walk but we didn’t at all and we didn’t see anyone else struggling.

The history is fascinating and it’s a really beautiful, well preserved medieval village. There are tourist shops but not very many at all (we were in Carcassonne yesterday and that was very touristy). The views are amazing.

We stopped for lunch at La Table des Troubadours (very good food) and then wandered back. Highly recommended.
