Karo la Pass (5,039m) where you will get fantastic views of the holy (and pristine) Mount Nyenchen Kangsar glacier. As with most glaciers worldwide this one is also retreating. At the glacier you will also find a small market and a toilet.

It is right by the side of the road! Maybe that's one of the advantages you have while traveling in Tibet. With such high elevation you can see these alpine views even in summer!

Whilst there are other glaciers along this road, this has a large parking area underneath it whereas others are in the distance. Maybe we were just lucky with timing, but in the fields below the glacier was a village of 6 tents and yak holding pens and the nomads dressed in working attire. Really good to observe, even with solar... More

We visited this glacier on our drive from Lhasa to Shigatse. It's at a pass just over 5,000m high. It's am absolutely stunningly beautiful area of dramatic landscape and snowcapped peaks. Sadly the glacier has receded dramatically over the last 10 years - a sign of global warming. However it'd close enough still to get a real feel for it.

While driving from Lhasa to Gyantse, just after "Yamdrok Yumtso Lake", you'll arrive at Karola Pass, at 5.039m above sea level. And there, right there, the magnificent "Karola Glacier"! It isn't a big glacier, but it is spectacular and very close to the highway. The contrast between blue skies, snow peaked mountains and turquoise waters will be forever in our... More

Surrounded by snow capped mountains and the passes up there are really extra-ordinary. Do not miss this.

Wonderful view amongst blue backdrop. Local vendors do disturb with their fare, forcing you to buy from them

Kharola glacier is on the scenic drive between Shigatse and Lhasa. The glacier is at about 7000 meter elevation and the view point is at 5200 meter elevation. There is a stupa there and the Yak ride for photo attraction. The view was superb. According to our guide the glacier is slowly disappearing. So see it while it is still... More

Visited the Karo-La area the second time within 2 years. After my first trip was a washout I was really looking forward to my second attempt. And what a day it was. Superb weather with clear and unhindered views of Mt. Nojin Kangsang (7,191m) and the opposite mountain range of Mt. Kalurong (approx. 6,700m high). There wasn't much traffic on... More

In any other context, Kharola Glacier would be overwhelmingly memorable. But Tibet is so full of sublime and beautiful sights, this stop is less impressive than it otherwise would be. Still worth a stop! The tragedy of it lies in that the glacier is slowly disappearing thanks to climate change. So see it while you can. Sad that our children... More
