Garry Donohoe of Island Tours was strongly recommended to us and we were most impressed with the whole day. A well informed and friendly guide who told interesting stories and had planned our day in detail. We had brilliant views of Scapa Flow, were impressed by the World War 2 buildings but the highlight of our tour had to be the stunning walk to the Old Man of Hoy and picnic by the sea. I was feeling a bit nervous about the 3 hour walk to the Old Man of Hoy and back but Garry was brilliant. He explained the terrain so I could pace myself and I made it feel easily. I noticed he was well prepared for our safety - he even had flasks of tea and coffee and chocolate bars! At the end of the day we visited a RSPB site watching the sea birds and listening to skylarks. Book with Garry for an informative and memorable visit to the island of Hoy.

This was a fantastic tour. Ron was a first class tour guide....very professional, knowledgeable, friendly and made sure that we got a comprehensive view of Hoy. The day passed very quickly because there was so much to see. We did a lot of hiking, saw neolithic and WWII sites plus Hoy cultural sites from the last two centuries; Ron gave a lot of detail on everything.

Great day out with Steve of this tour of Hoy. At the great viewpoint overlooking Scapa you almost felt you were there especially with Steve's extensive knowledge of what was going on plus his portfolio of photographs from 1st World War. The tour is very worthwhile and it's good you can have the choice of doing the cliff top walk or visiting Scapa Museum.

We were really delighted with our tour of Hoy with Steven. He is so knowledgeable about the history of the islands, and in particular, Scapa Flow. He provided us with hot drink and snacks as well as well researched visual aids. The picnic spot was unusual and really beautiful in Rackwick Bay. A place I had been longing to visit.
Steven has a number of interesting tales and myths about island life that reflect the Orcadian storytelling tradition. I particularly liked the coastal walk in the afternoon to astonishing cliffs and sea bird colonies. Returning via the town of Longhope and some stories of lifeboat history and rescues. I thoroughly recommend this well organised and fascinating trip. Thank you Steven and Callum

Hoys and ourselves thoroughly enjoyed the tour yesterday. Thank you, Steven, for giving us such a detailed and informative day. We thought the museum was one highlight, but it is too hard to choose just one. Betty’s grave was such a moving tale, as was the ghost story. On your recommendation I have bought Outrun, again a sad and moving story so far, I am assuming that she makes a success of life in the end! You also enhanced our knowledge of wartime history. Thank you. We will come again and also encourage our family to come. Best wishes Vicky

This was an outstanding tour not to be missed. It is great value for money - we had a full day tour that included a walk to the Old Man of Hoy, insights into island history and culture, stops at WWI and WWII history sites as well as a Neolithic site, a great visit to the lifeboat museum, and a beautiful coastal walk. We highly recommend this tour!

Steve’s tour was a highlight of our holiday.
His passion for the island and all its intricacies is infectious and his wonderful story telling added humour, flavor and fun.
We walked to the “old man” and then proceeded to beautiful Rachwick Bay for a picnic.
We learned about the music of Peter Maxwell Davies especially his compositions associated with the island.
We learned and visualized from various locations the stories of past shipwrecks, burials, legends and more.
It was a memorable day.
I hope to one day return, hopefully to also coincide with a night at the Gable Theatre.
We left wanting to stay longer.
Thank you Steve

Steven meet us off the 10:30 ferry and advised us of the day's planned itinerary, taking into account mobility and age issues. We felt that we saw most of what the wonderful island of Hoy had to offer, enhanced by Steven's local knowledge. In all we covered 7 1/2 miles on foot taking in the splendid scenery and stunning views.

The day was extremely varied and held our interest with equal amounts of wildlife, history, military, scenery, folklore, and the lifeboat. We left on the last ferry feeling tired but happy, knowing we will return and we cannot praise Steven and The Hoy Island tours enough, highly recommend, even those with reduced mobilities.

If ever you come to Orkney, do not miss a visit to the Island of Hoy. Steven gave us a memorable time in this very special place. He is not only a wonderful guide to the natural highlights and the extraordinary sites like „The Old Man of Hoy“ and „The Scapa Flow“, but he also gives a lot of interesting comments on The history of the Islands and the archeological sites to visit. In his comfortable vehicle he took us all around this fascinating island and was more than helpful for the Organisation of our visit to this lovely place. It is highly recommended to stay at least one night in one of the hotels in Longhope. We had very good food and drinks at Stromabank Hotels, weich offers really nice Roms.
Altogether: An awesome experience!!
