Yulong Liming Laojun Mountain National Geopark is an awesome attraction with endless breathtaking natural scenery of red earth, cliffs, valleys, peak forest and Thousand Tortoise Mountain. In order to fully enjoy this hike, ensure you have appropriate sports attire (summer, autumn), shoes, light backpack, a bottle of water and a good camera.

Laojun Mountain belongs to Danxia landform, which is formed from red-coloured sandstones and conglomerates of largely Cretaceous age.

The landscape of Laojun Mountain is amazing, the sunrise and sunset are perfect for photographing. The formed sandstones appears red color under sunshine, and the shape of sandstone looks like thousands of tortoise are moving forward to the top of mountain.

Rock Climbing is very popular outdoor activities in Laojun Mountain area.Climbers are able to spend one week to experience different grade of climbing route.

If visitors don't have climbing skills,The Iron Road could (Two Routes: 180 Yuan for 1 hour and 300 Yuan for two hours )be a good option for people who would like to dance on the edge of rock.

It will cost several days to hike from Lijiang Laojun Mountain Scenic Spot to 99 Dragon Ponds in Dali. This is tough hiking trip for hikers who will climb over passes, hike through virgin forest. It's nice to hike in Laojun Mountain area when the azaleas bloom in May.

Lisu minority lives in Laojun Mountain area, they will come together and dance around bonfire every evening. This is good chance to communicate with they and taste Lisu ethnic rice wine.

Liming Laojun Mount Geopark is located in Liming Ethnic Lisu Village in Yulong Ethnic Naxi
Autonomous County in Lijiang, Yunnan province of China. It hA wonderful patterns of Danxia
peak forest, Danxia Cliffs and Ethnic Lisu villages. Peaks with tortoise shell shape surface are unique here. Liming Danxia Landforms are mainly are composed by large red colord cliffs, special tortoise sehll peaks, multi layer and odd shaped mountains. Three typical features of Danxia Landform are flat top, deep slope and gentle base. Also visible here is a sharp peak that is a glacier feature.

From Shaxi we moved on to a most spectacular national park not on many people's radar, not even to Chinese. I'm glad that our guide Nongbu took us to see LJ National Park. It is quite remote and a good distance from Shaxi, but worth the drive. Some areas remind me of America's Grand Canyon. A cable ropeway enabled us to reach to a mountain top with views not seen by very many.
Be prepared for lots of steps and hiking. Apparently among those who know about this place are hardcore mountain climbers. We encountered a young couple leaving our next stay, Liming Tent Hotel.

This is a great place, not many tourists, not even well known to the Chinese really, mainly just people from the climbing fraternity. Amazing countryside, fantastic red rock monuments and features with good high and low level walking too, not easy to get to and worth making a few days out there. There is a nightly fire dance festival in the community centre and a few local eateries but not much else

The unusual rock formations and colors are striking as you enter a steep canyon for the cable car rides to the top. We couldn't believe that the government had spent so much money on infrastructure, but without the accompanying crowds. I don't think the government realizes how big a role is played by marketing. In any case, this scenic area which reminded us somewhat of Zion National Park, did not have any crowds. The Park has wooden walkways and stairways to enable tourists to visit all the scenic spots without danger to themselves.

Compared to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, this is a lesser-known mountain to tourists including the Chinese. This is largely due to the distance from Dayan. Depending on the type of vehicle and driver, it takes about 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 hours drive from Dayan. My driver got me here within 2-1/2 hours but he drove too fast when it comes to the safety issue.

The price the national park charges for its services is unbelievably high – RMB245 (RMB105 for entrance fee, RMB20 for bus & RMB120 for cable car). Unfortunately, this is common in China these days.

I, in particular, love the “Tortoise Shell Danxia Peak”. Tourists could no longer climb up to the top of mountain like they used to. As a result, taking a nice photo of the peak is next to impossible. That said, it is still worth paying a visit to here if you will stay in Lijiang for a few days.

The whole National Park is about 600 sq km so lots to see, Lisu tribe houses, red earth, cliffs and valleys covered with plumtrees... But I warmly recommend 1 thing I've done which will probably stay in my memory forever: going up the Thousand Tortoise Mountain, a prehistoric geologic surprise that will be worth your climbing ! (looots of steps and dirt paths), but I met a 70 yo or so up there, so anyone can do it :) !
