The views at the top are worth seeing but we wish we would have gotten there earlier to avoid the crowds. We got to the cableway (it is very needed) around 4 pm and waited 40 minutes to go up and 30 minutes to come back down. There are many platforms and the stairs are in decent condition. There are also lots of photo opportunities for the altitude markers. It takes a lot of energy to get to the top platform and it is worth the struggle.

We couldn't find a bus or transport provider on our own as the places we found online were closed. Our hotel helped arrange a private tour and we paid 380 RMB each for transport to/from, Blue Moon Valley, water, lunch, cable car tickets, park pass, grassland stop, down parka rental and oxygen cannisters. We found our guide very helpful and she constantly communicated with us over WeChat which made our trip very efficient! The lunch was quite good and had yak meat jerky and a chicken hotpot.

We found that in July the parka is not needed and it is a pain to lug it around all day. They convinced us to take it because it might rain at the top of the mountain. I think a rain jacket would be enough just in case. We were only allowed one oxygen canister each but our guide said she could get us more. My wife felt the oxygen cannister was helpful while I saved mine in the case of any struggle. I found I didn't need it and friends that have gone previously also said they didn't use theirs as well.

Our hotel advised that a cable car was needed and tried to help us book through the Lijiang Tourism Application. The photo registration worked for my Asian wife the first time but it took 34 tries for me and I had to stand under a fluorescent light to be at my whitest and pastiest in order for it to take. I still couldn't register for cable car and park passes and the hotel staff and I figured it is likely because we are foreigners. You can get cable car tickets at the entrance to the park but Chinese can by the day in advance so it could be tough. We felt having a guide ensured we could get on a cable car but a little late.

Buy a bottle of water before the cable car if needed. The water bottles at the top were expensive and small. Drinks and snacks at the upper station were expensive as well and may not quench your thirst - 15 RMB coconut milk, red bull, monster energy drink, etc. There are also opportunities to dress up in traditional clothes and take a picture with a yak or llama.

Aside from the long cable car waits and crowded busses I thought it was worth the trip. Expect to spend 2 to 3 hours waiting for cable cars, struggling for breath and climbing the stairs.

Foreigners can book tickets for the cable car very easily but Chinese people should book theirs 3 days in advance. Be quick or they sell out fast! If you miss out, taobao is reliable.

There was a small queue to enter the park (still a fair way from the cable car) and from there it’s about a 10 minute drive to the tourist center to collect tickets for the cable car.

From the tourist center you are taken in a shuttle bus for about 10 minutes to the cable car station, which is another 10 minute journey to the top (about 4,508m at this point). You can stay here or choose to climb a further 100 metres to the highest peak at 4600m~.

The view is good but we chose a particularly cloudy day to climb so wasn’t the best, however that isn’t why this mountain got 4 stars instead of 5.

Everything is completely overpriced. They made the mountain into a “how much money can we make?” scheme. Oxygen is marked up three-fold, water is twice as expensive, even the jackets require a 500rmb deposit (which, by the way, stink of smoke from all the 叔叔 that wore them before you). What a shame considering this place is historic and sentimental in Chinese culture.

Second time visiting this marvelous mountain and this time is a different feel.
This time was raining so when went up to the peak was actually snowing and quite heavy, compared to last time which we could view perfectly the scenes at the top. Nonetheless, there is always a special feeling when we reaching the ground on the top from the cable car, maybe is that feeling that brings me back to Lijiang again...

We got the 101 tourist bus from near the waterwheel in Lijiang Old Town (follow signs for 'bus station', it will take you to a bus stop). The bus was 15RMB per person one way. On the way the bus will stop and someone will board and you'll buy the entrance ticket for 100RMB. Then the bus will continue and drop you at the tourist centre. Once you go through the maze of shops and restaurants you can buy cable car tickets and go to the shuttle bus terminal. The cable car up the mountain was 120RMB, but as it was a cloudy day we didn't feel it was worth it.
We rode the shuttle bus (20RMB) to the mountain cable car stop, but stayed on and then it dropped us at Blue Moon Valley. We had a nice walk around the lake with some good views of the mountain. But the lake is artificial so it feels a bit strange and fake. We thought we could ride the shuttle bus to the Spruce and Yak meadows to see some more views, but were told we could only go if we had a cable car ticket for those areas, so ended up going back to the visitor centre.
Overall, we felt underwhelmed and disappointed. I'm sure once upon a time this was a beautiful place, but now it's so commercialised it's lost it's beauty. It's full of tourists and buses, not as peaceful as you'd hope. On a clear day I think the experience would be better.

The Mountain is beautiful, but the tourist experience is not. We thought about booking a tour package but that’s not open to foreigners right now due to special passport checks needed for foreigners. We took a taxi to the mountain ourselves. The cable car to the top was sold out, but we got tickets to cable car to the lower checkpoint at Spruce Meadow (can buy tickets as long as you show passport and green health code). Cost per person was 50 RMB entrance, 20 RMB for bus inside the park and 40 RMB for cable car. Altogether including the taxi for 2 people approximately US$50, so not expensive and much cheaper than tour package. But experience was very touristy - walking around spruce meadow (very pretty) itself was approx 40 mins, but waiting for cable cars and busses was more than an hour. It was “Instagram world” with lots of people taking wedding photos etc with photographers in tow. We are staying at a lodge near the mountain and in retrospect should have just hiked around the mountain base ourselves. We didn’t buy any of the air cans and were fine, long sleeved shirt and pants also sufficient though we didn’t go to the top.

Tourist trap! Avoid!
The worst place during our lljiang trip.
The view outside the park is better than inside. They first charge 100 rbm for the park ticket but it is not all you will pay. Then for each attraction spot, they ask you to buy each bus ticket to and then you need take the bus back to where you bought the ticket even the next attraction is just down the road. And they closed one cable car the day we went but there is no sign for the closing at the ticket place. We bought bus ticket to one of the cable car riding places then found out it was closed. It was noon we decide to try one of the two remaining cable cars but was told all sold out!! So we spend 100 yuan to enter the park just saw the blue moon valley which is main made very small lake full of the people! And many people take over the front rows and dress up big bright custom to take wedding or web posting pictures. And they had fancy lighting equipment set up there. There is very hard to take a picture without those people or their equipment in it. Typical Chinese tour place problems. There are quite trash inside the lake. The stairs and waterfall are made made too. There are several young U.S. tourist bought their oxygen bottles but could n’t get any cable car tickets too. Someone told us there are tickets but you have to get them through tour agents.
The ticket not allowed to re-enter for next day either. Just totally waste of entrance tickets. We are very disappointed!

We paid a revisit to the mountain as we were here twenty years ago. Things have changed significantly. Though the cable car is the same, all the wooden houses, on the right side of the walkway have disappeared. The eatery place is replaced by modern shops selling icecream, ginger coke and tasty meat skewers.

However we were not as lucky this time,as one ascend higher up we were met with fog and rain drizzle, we were not able to see the snow covered mountain top.

We walk up to the monastery which is still there which is under renovation. We noticed there were lots of young people carrying the oxygen nebulizer and we were lucky we did not experience any high altitude sickness. It appears the Jade Mountain is a popular spot for newly weds as we saw at least three to four married couples with their painstaking efforts trying to walk towards their destination to have their wedding photos taken. We were blessed the temperature was just right not in heat or cold,it was at 16C which was very comfortable.

There is also a lake on the left on the walkway which we hiked up the last time but we did not do it due to time limitation.

Be aware that one needs to book its ticket one day in advance, otherwise one would not be allowed to purchase the cable car ticket. The wechat page of the Jade dragon mountain is where one can book, either by calling the visitor center (08888889999) or through chatting with the bot and sending pictures of the passport.
Apart from that the mountain looked beautiful from below. Hopefully we'll manage to go up another time.

What an amazing trip. Words cannot describe this experience. It is a must do if in Lijiang. We booked with a local tour company through our hotel. It was very easy. Get the oxygen canisters it makes the journey up much easier. In August you don't need the heavy coats.

We loved this mountain visit. It was such a fun day out.

No English signs or help meant a slight panic when we discovered the other people in our cable car all had oxygen containers tucked into their bags and we had none and were on the way up. They also didn't speak English so it was a nerve racking ride.

The hyperbaric chamber at the top wasn't so assuring either. However we could breathe fine and the view was lovely. Most of the Chinese sucked away on their oxygen containers. They do also sell oxygen at the top. The mountain is pretty high around 5500metres (18300ft) and you can climb quite a long way from the cable car up stairs although the air is thin and we did get a headache.

The marble vomit bowls at the bottom are a nice touch as the cable car does descend very fast and many people used these and some also missed. We seemed ok also and didn't vomit.

Despite all if this we had an awesome day and I would highly recommend this mountain visit to everyone. There is something the Chinese do very well and its let people explore their own limits. I would go back! We would all go back. Such a fun day out.

We then went on to Blue Moon Valley on the bus which was stunning - words can't describe the beauty.
