Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.

Established to ferry travelers to some of the Cyclades islands (Andros, Tinos, Mykonos, Paros, Naxos), this location does not lend itself as a port with decent infrastructure. MISSING are the suburban railway/ metro stations , adequate highway network into and out of Rafina; in addition, there are very few hotels relative to the numerous tourists who pass through . Combined with the toxic sulfurous diesel fumes that the ships spew into the air, this port is a sorry example in country where tourism is such an important component. Plan on a very short stay on your way to the islands.

We took the bus straight from Athens airport and it was a quick drive to the port. It's a nice, peaceful port village and my daughter even swam at the beach while waiting for the ferry. There is a luggage storage which was 2€ for 8 hours and we got all our bags in 1 locker. There are lots of taverns and coffee shops and the square with shops is a 5 minute walk. We took a ferry to Mykonos and I will definitely use Rafina port over Piraeus anytime.

The lockers costs €2,00 for 8 hours and €3,00 for 24 hours. They’re spacious so they easily fit 2 large suitcases and a small one might as well fit.

Athens has 2 main ports. The biggest port is Piraeus and Rafina is the smaller port. However if you are travelling by ferry to Mykonos it is an hour shorter from Rafina. The main choice would be where you’re located. We were initially staying in the main part of Athens Old Town with the main sites. Piraeus is closer and easier to get to by train. Our second trip was a return ferry from Santorini as we were flying out the following day. Rafina is closer to Athens airport.

Rafina is our short escape from home on weekends. The nice port gives the recreative feeling of vacations and helps relaxation, just half hour drive from the crowded Athens city.
Αlongside the portmouth there is a long pedestrian boardwalk by the sea and after the rocky brakewater a sandy beach extends for about 500meters. On the coast road, just over the port, stands the nice Hoter Avra (means breeze) where a coffe is a must! Hungry visitors have an even better choise: fresh fish at the little tavernas near the port gate!
Any time we visit Rafina either with friends or family we have the feeling of relaxing on an aegean island, so far from daily life and stress!! I think it's an ideal place for tourists who want to combine a visit to Athens, Marathon, Plataiai, with seaside vacations!

Nice view, but nothing else to do unless you are here to take the ferry.
Thought we could spent a day here whilst waiting for our night flight out, turns out a waste of time.

Look you are here because of the ferry. And you did the right thing to avoid the expense of going to Athens and the chaos of Piraeus port. The bus (actually it is a coach) from the airport is about two or three euros and runs about ever hour and a half - from early in the morning to late at night.
Only take a taxi from Rafina or organise for a Rafina taxi to meet you at the airport - otherwise you will meet the "jaws" of the taxi world. The Rafina guys are very honest - 35/40 euros.
If you miss your ferry or there is bad weather there is the Avra Hotel. - it dominates the port. They are helpful and friendly. The place is clean but rooms are in the process of being renovated. The restaurant is really good and the breakfast buffet really sets you up for the ferries that leave from around 7 a.m.
And then you will be on your way to the sunshine!

Rafina Port on the eastern part of the Attica peninsula is accessible from Athens either through the tollway (the same one that goes to the airport) or through Odos Marathonodromos St (Marathon runner street) which passes through the northeastern suburbs of Athens. From this port ferries leave regularly for the Cyclades (Andros, Mykonos, Tinos). The ferries are good and it is worth it to pay a little more and get in a very nice lounge. One is advised to be there 2 hours in advance of the ferry departure. This is ironic because everyone rushes on (no lines) to get onboard while the disembarking cars are still coming out. The explanation is that there are no seat assignments so people rush in to get the good seats - whatever that means because the trips are short and the ferries are large.
The good thing is that if one arrives early as recommended, one can have a very nice lunch in one of the fish taverns by the port entrance. Some of the fish taverns have an adjoining fish market so what you get is what you see: fresh from the local catch. Choose something from the local catch rather than frozen fish from the Athens Fish Market.
We had lunch at the Fishtavern Ioakim which is next to the agency from where we picked up the ferry tickets (we booked them over the internet). It has a white and light blue scheme. The fish dishes were excellent and so was the salad. From there we could see the ferry arriving and drove the 100 yards to the embarkation point.
There was a meek attempt by the ship and port authorities to maintain some order but it was hopeless. However, it was amazing how quickly the ferry emptied from the arriving passengers and the new passengers and cars boarded. The same was observed at the island ports. Is organized chaos more efficient?

Rafina is about 20 minutes from Athens airport by car and a natural travel port for many of the popular Greek Islands. We were there to travel to Andros which is often the first destination as the ferries go to other Cycladic islands like Tinos, Mykonos etc and offer a variable standard of seating and comfort depending on your budget and time of travel.
We were there during June and it was mega-busy although we understand it can get even crazier during the July/August peak. You need to be aware that the ferries are a lifeline for a lot of the islands and carry significant numbers of cars along with trucks and semi-trailers. And then there are the passengers. They come in all shapes and sizes and get their tickets in a variety of ways. There are a number of agencies that sell tickets close to the ferry terminal, travel agents that do the same and some people buy their tickets prior to leaving home. We have no recommendations on this area as our experience tells us it is a movable feast and you need to do some research on the subject.
What comes out of it is there are some ‘fast’ ferries and some that travel at a slower pace. Again, this is your decision as to how you wish to get to you destination. You can also pay a basic fare or one that is classified as ‘luxury’, ‘business’ or some other classification that means it is more expensive but usually means a guaranteed seat.
If it is a quiet day (or time of day), you will find the whole process easy and the staff are usually quite helpful and it is very nice. If it is really busy, the whole process can be a bit overwhelming as there can be a lot of people (some with luggage) all trying to board at the same time. The ferries reverse into the wharf and lower a very large hydraulic platform that allows all the passengers to disembark and then all the vehicles to drive off the ferry. Sometimes, there are separate smaller platforms that come down for people only and this can help.
If it is really busy and you are travelling with more than one person, some teamwork can help. Put one person in charge of the luggage and another to secure some seats if you bought the basic fare. If you paid extra the same thing applies, get the forward seat person to find your numbered seats as often they are occupied by wishful travel people.

I spent a morning in Rafina port - I walked on the beach, the port and then hiked through the streets to the chapel (500 meters from the port) above to take photographs of the scenic view of aegean sea.

Hi we are coming from mykonos on may 3 and flying back to Canada on the 4th early afternoon. Should we stay in Rafina or go directly to the soffitel hotel at the airport. I think the faster ferry gets in around 4pm. Love some advice. If staying in Rafina what is the nicest nest location hotel? TIA

What you think about Rafina as the place for vacation (summer holiday)? Do you know some places near Rafina (not islands) where can we spend (family with two kids) our summer holidays?

I stayed in Kokkino Limanaki, near Rafina. Its perfect for kids, and there are only locals on that beach. it is not organized though

What time do cafes & tavernas open from and to at Rafina port? I am particularly interested in early morning as thinking of getting an overnight flight from UK arriving 4am or 5am?
Written 4 February 2017
I passed by the Avra Hotel in November 2018. It is closed this winter for renovations. Yes it did close down completely but it is now under new management who now provide a free airport shuttle. I don't know when it will re-open in 2019.
