Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Gremi complex must have been in the focus of the local authorities willing to increase the touristy attractiveness of Georgia. The city of Gremi, once the capital of the Kakhetian Kingdom and the Royal seat during XVI-XVII centuries, was destroyed by Persian Shah Abbas in 1615 and had only been restored in our days.
Quite thoroughly renovated, Gremi Complex is presently in a good condition, with many things to see. It had even been included into the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List.
The following are presently open to the public: the relatively small but quite interesting museum, the Royal Tower and the Church of Archangels on the top of the hill, and the ruins of aristocratic and commercial quarters of the ancient city of Gremi (including the trading arcades, a bathhouse and residential buildings) at its bottom and the ruines of the domed church in between the Royal part and the commercial quarter.
Entrance is for a fee; it was about 6 lari for the museum in Jan 2012. Guided tours are offered on spot.
The museum attendants can show you around the small hall, but guided tour isn’t that necessary with English signs and information boards available. And the Citadel attendant will tell more about the Citadel Complex and the Church of Archangels built in 1565 by order of King Leon (Levan) of Kakheti. He will also allow you to climb up the Royal Tower, should you wish. Don’t miss this chance – the panorama from up there is fabulous!
P.S. An attendant had only opened the bathroom (near the parking lot) for a petty fee. Parking was for free though.

Quite an imposing sight on the landscape as you approach. Beautiful architecture and equally beautiful views of the surrounding area. Not very busy compared with others we visited on this day. Worth a visit.

On the river's bend, up the hill, the great castle towers. Some walk from the bus/car stop. Amazing view on the ancient village. Wine cellars and great photo opportunities
Too bad the area is full of trash and garbage, though,

The new museum was nice and informative, and the property looks well maintained. You get a good feel for the history of the surrounding area.

We visited Gremi Church when we rented bikes from Temi Community. It's beautifully located and you have nice views over the whole area. Inside the church is also nice;)

Standing above the green valley of Alazan, Gremi attracts travelers whose road goes between Telavi and Kvareli. Gloomy and monumental, the castle is the one of the most visited tourist points in Georgia.
The architectural ensemble of Gremi in the look that it has up to present day was built in the 16th century in the times of King Levan of Kakheti, who announced Gremi the capital of the Kingdom of Kakheti.

The Gremli Architectural Complex is on top of a steep hill. It comprises an ancient walled town, palace, fortress, church, monastry & museum. Archeological items on display date back to the bronze age. There is a great view from the complex down to the valley below, but the best views are from the watch-tower located at the top of a tight winding staircase. This complex is very well worth a visit.

Stopped of here on a small group tour of the Caucasus region, the Church itself stands out proud of the surroundings overlooking all it can. At its time it would have been the centre but multiple sackings and battles have reduced the surrounding area. Following invasions from Persia all vineyards and mulberry were uprooted and left barren. However, having parked in the car park we first went to the museum and spent about 20 minutes seeing a few relics from the past before making the small trek to the church itself. There was a small service in progress so we were able to experience the reciting of prayers to the icons. The building itself is in reasonable condition, you can climb all the way to the very top tower and get amazing views over the land below, and what's more even clearer views to the snow capped peaks to the north. Within the general building;dings you can find a few more relics, none more strange than an old wooden toilet!

The 16th century church is quite impressive and together with the adjoining winery makes a pleasant outing if in the area.
