This park is particular and evocative with various and bizarre lava formations flanked by basalt columns formed by the rapid cooling of the lava which unusually appear in a horizontal position. The name Parco degli Echi derives from the strange echoes created by the numerous caves and unusual rock formations. The visit takes place following a well-marked and delimited circular path which takes about an hour. The most interesting formations are close to the river, some of which have a surprising honeycomb surface. Among the best known is Kastili or the "Castle" which is located on the opposite bank of the river and is made up of two main pillars which give it the appearance of a fortress, and the Kirkjan or the "Church", practically an arch almost regular which is actually the entrance to a cave. The contrast between these large dark rocks and the green vegetation that surrounds the formations is also pleasant.

The basalt rock formations here are just stunning and very unique. The first part of the trail is very easy. If you do not want to take the difficult trail, you still have seen most of the rock formations. You can make this trip as long and adventurous as you like or are capable of. It is free.

Spectacular little-known place. On the SS682, turn at the intersection that indicates it. From the car park, a 1 km path will lead you to the lava formations which will amaze you with their colours, shapes and sizes which are difficult to evaluate unless you are close to them or inside them.
Hidden gem and not adequately advertised

Aliens must have built this! In all seriousness, it's amazing. Craziest rock formations that are mind-boggling.

We arrived via route 85 from Husavik. From Myvatn, it's about 2 hours. you exit rt 85 onto rt 862, drive 15 minutes and turn left (it's not marked but it's just before the sign saying you must be in a 4x4 to continue straight to Dettifoss). It's 1-2 km to the end of the road which dead-ends in a parking lot (just past a camp site). No restrooms here or food services.

We took the V3 hike to the Echo Rocks "Hljodaklettar". It's not far maybe 2km but it's rocky and you have to scramble up and down rocky steps and over a small stream. Not great for those who are not sure-footed.

This place is so fantastic! Make sure you go toward the sign for the "Kirkja" which brings you to a giant cave with a curved rock ceiling. We only saw 2 other parties while here (no bus tours) so we felt truly alone to enjoy this mysterious incredible place.

Asbyrgi canyon is just 25 minutes away by car. We did both in the same day.

There appears to be a brand new paved road and carpark down to here, so apart from being narrow and steep car access is now easy.
The highlights are the The Castle and Troll rock formations, the "Echo Rocks" which are a hemispherical lava formation of Lava Roses and the fantastic church cave "Kirkjan".
There are 2 routes, the rocky path from the bottom is quite tricky with lots of scrambling, the alternative or way back is an easy path , but they make an interesting circular hike.

This trailhead provides access to a few different length walks. We took the 5.1km Rauðhólar Circle which displays an incredible array of basalt columns in all manner of orientations. Slightly tricky going in a couple of spots but really worth it. Enjoyed The Lava Church too.

Alas when we turned up Hljóðaklettar was still closed off to traffic so only able to see rock formations from distance view point. Really disappointed as had come a long way and no apparent reason for closure.

Beautiful in a way that cannot be easily described. Gets better the closer you get to the rocks. There is a easy hike but a little bit of a 4 step climb. You can choose long or short distance.
The echo happens as soon as you park, not when you are in the enclosure, try to shout when you get out of the car and there is a proper echo from the cliffs all around. My little one had a blast.
The formations are spectacular and no photo can really capture it, such a deep 3D experience. This is close to Dettifoss and easy to do both in one day, but that would be a full day, especially if you hike towards Selfoss as well. A great day though!

This area is very strange, filled with lava formations that actually is the lava from the inside of the lava tubes after that looser soil has been removed by wind and weather. There are some amazing basalt structures and places where the earth seems to have tipped over and solidified. There are two places that really are something to see. One is the circular si-fi looking concave "hole" filled with basalt rocks. It is located to the right, towards the river when you follow the track from the parking to the point where the track splits up. The track then forms a circle that you can walk. The riverside part (going to the right/counterclockwise) is quite hard to walk. Involves high steps and a bit of climbing. Very little to see here too. If you go to the left, the path is much better and it will then quickly take you to the other sight to see - "The Church". A wavy shaped cave. After seeing that you easily can backtrack back to the parking from here or continue to loop clockwise.

The dirt road leading in was quite pitted when we visited, but still easily passable in any vehicle at slow speeds. It was very nice to hike around here and admire the scenery including a beautiful river, some cliffs, and a multitude of interesting rock/cave formations. There were a few different trails to check out and it was not busy at all when we visited. While we saw a few different people at times, we were basically alone a majority of the time. We thought it was time well spent.
