Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is certainly worth the walk. Amazing views on the way and gorgeous once you get out to the beach. I’m far from being fit and made it there and back.

This is just the most wonderful beach in NZ if you like a walk and are ready to take hundreds of photos. There is hardly anyone there and it is spectacular. Sand dunes, rock arches, wild waves, and seals. It is worth the drive.

A picturesque 20min walk through rolling farmland leads you to the Beach. There we had to navigate 200m of burning hot grey sand to reach the water’s edge. Check out the limestone islands along the waters edge. The carpark is large but this beach can get popular - especially in high season.

We came here a few years ago and it was cold ,the wind so strong and sand was blowing everywhere so it was a quick visit - this time we went prepared and instead were treated to a lovely mild still morning and able to spend a good hour down on the beach exploring. A nice easy walk in - only takes around 10-15 mins from the carpark, we got onto the beach around 10am , was low tide and we had it all to ourselves. Great photo spot down the end of the beach and up a small path (turn left after coming off the main sandune walk in).

A short walk over farm land and bush takes you to Wharariki Beach. It is such a beautiful beach - perfect for photography. If you are lucky, the seals will be there sleeping on the rocks and swimming in the rock pools. Absolute must do if in the area!

Well worth the walk. The farm land section is an easy walk - however the sand dune section needs a little more energy. If you walk directly from the car park to the beach around 40 minutes - make sure you note where the marker post is to come back. The seals are every where. We made the mistake of walking into a cave with sunglasses on and missed a seal hiding under a rock. He let us know if his presence. Try to plan your visit at low tide. If you will be coming back after the sun has set - a torch could be worthwhile. plenty of parking, you may just need to walk a little further if busy. All in all absolutely a stunning spot to visit and free.

This is a must do and you will not be dissapointed. However, try and time it such that you are there on or near the low tide. Also beware that it is a bit of a walk and the sand dune section is very energy sapping because the sand is so fine.

But the beach is lovely, the rocks are amazing, and hopefully you will see seals. It's free, so why not give it a go.

We got four seasons in 20 minutes, and sand-blasted to the max to go with it, and didn't regret a second of it - even if the weather at the beach was horrible. Looking at he photos a week later, all we could remember was the stunning views. An easy over-farm land walk and a bit of soft sand at the end, this is accessible to most, and the views of the arches in the rocks is one of NZ's best kept secrets (although there were about 20 cars in the carpark, so maybe the secret is getting out.) About 25 minutes scenic drive from Collingwood along the bay-side road, this place is definitely recommended, just expect it to be very windy!

An easy walk through rolling farm hills onto the dunes. Magnificent sea views. It was pretty windy the day we went but still worth it.
