As we were staying at a nearby lodge, next to the bushmen engraving site, we decided to meet the desert elephants. We booked a tour with Twyfelfontaine Elephant Drive. What an experience!

The staff at reception were very nice and the guide that took us on the tour transmitted his broad knowledge on these animals.

He found the elephants, and brought us so close to them with a complete respect towards these animals.

We enjoyed it very much. If around the area, the tour is so worth it. Thanks for the experience!

What a fantastic excursion this was.

This is a start up company, James in collaboration with a sweet English couple we personally met on the premises. They have just finished constructing their stylish office and super clean toilets, beautiful modern African style with an adorable garden out front.

James was very accommodating letting the two of us join a group of Spanish people, which were super fun. The company has brand new jeeps and very professional drivers, they really now how to move around in the nature without disturbing the animals while giving you the best of the wildlife.
We were soo lucky to find both groups of elephants, the larger one of 15 elephants and the smaller one of 5 animals.

And if wasn’t just about elephants, we saw lot of other wildlife on our way and we stopped at several incredible view points.

During the excursion the offered us water from the cooler, a very nice gesture.

We would definitely recommend joining their excursions, if was worth every penny.

Check out their camping/lodge. We didn’t have the time to visit, but with the same management and style, I’m sure it’s a great option nearby.

From the moment we set foot on the sandy terrain of Namibia, my dad and I knew we were in for an unforgettable adventure. Our shared passion for conservation and the desire to learn about the desert elephants led us to this extraordinary safari. What set it apart was the incredible bond we formed with our guide, who showered us with undivided attention, sharing a wealth of knowledge and his incredible experiences working with these wild animals. It felt like we were learning from a true master, and by the end of our journey, we had not only gained a deep appreciation for these magnificent creatures, but also a cherished friendship.

One of the most striking aspects of this safari was the unwavering respect and consideration shown towards the animals and their habitats. Every step of the way, our guides emphasized the importance of non-invasive approaches and the welfare of the animals took precedence above all else. Witnessing this level of care and commitment was truly heartwarming, and it instilled in us a newfound sense of responsibility towards wildlife preservation.

Our six safaris were nothing short of awe-inspiring. We were granted the privilege of witnessing the sheer majesty and resilience of the desert elephants in their natural environment. Alongside these gentle giants, we encountered an abundance of wildlife, each with its own unique behaviors and characteristics. From playful ostriches and their adorable babies to the graceful giraffes and mischievous baboons, every encounter was a lesson in itself.

The safari went beyond the wildlife, giving us a profound understanding of the intricate web of life in this arid landscape. We learned to identify various trees and their symbiotic relationships with the wildlife, a knowledge that deepened our appreciation for the delicate balance of nature. Navigating through dry riverbeds, dunes, and prairies was exhilarating, yet at no point did we feel unsafe, even when we stood at arm’s length from a herd of elephants. By the end, my dad and I could differentiate between individual elephants and even estimate their ages through cues like tusk size and foot circumference. Throughout our journey, our safety and well-being were the top priorities, and the care we received was beyond exceptional.

Our adventure extended beyond the wilderness, as we had the privilege of immersing ourselves in the local tribes’ way of life. The connection between the safari and the community was unexpected and heartwarming. Witnessing the support provided to the local boarding school and tribes was a testament to the positive impact of responsible tourism. Additionally, the visit to the ancient engravings of Twyfelfontein offered a mesmerizing glimpse into the history and evolution of generations past. To Granville, Charles, and Vincent, we extend our deepest gratitude for this life-changing experience. We can’t wait to return and continue this incredible journey of discovery and conservation.

Heartfelt gratitude from Tom and John

A must see to understand what adaptation to climate conditions mean!
Its unique to Namibia. Some 200 elephant live in almost desert condition. they live in this semi desert area. having half of their daily water consumption, and 30% of the vegetation they eat! We were told that they are genetically same as other African elephants, they just adopt different living quantity. They know to identify where is undersoil water and use their tusks. to dig in the soil and find the water.
We went to a safari drive from the lodge we stay that took ~ 2 hr to watch these unique phenomena of desert elephants! It is strongly recommended.

Without a doubt the highlight of our photography camping trip around Namibia.
Nothing prepared me for the close encounter with the Desert Adapted Elephants. Our guide Charles knew exactly what signs to look for to find them and shared how he had watched these gentle giants since childhood in the bush. The trip was enhanced by the landscape around us - soft , sandy riverbeds with stunning purple mountains and bright yellow flowers providing the backdrop to the elephants who emerged silently in front of us before coming within touching distance of our vehicles. There was awe , delight and wonder all mixed in together as we watched them going about their routines and customs. Tiny young elephants surrounded by their enormous parents and grandparents. It was an emotional experience - I can’t rate the campsite, guides and the experience highly enough. The photographs taken are pretty amazing too!

OUTSTANDING SAFARI

885141965

I booked a 17 day Safari for 10 people with Twyfelfontein Elephant Drives and Safaris pre pandemic .
It was then put on hold (with the rest of the world) until October 2022 .)
When we came to rearrange the dates etc I expected the prices to of shot up. I was wrong ,the cost of the vehicle hire had gone up and fuel which worked out at £100 extra each ...Twyfelfontein Elephant Drives and Safaris managed to keep the rest in budget.Credit to them .
The tour was in self drive 4x4`s with roof tents All were in good condition and had recovery insurance . Our main guide Charles Ryan drove an administration vehicle with trailer .
We drove to the south to see the quiver trees and then various locations driving North to Etosha before finishing back at Windhoek. We had several hours on the elephant drive at Twyfelfontein and saw plenty of elephant ,the guides knowing where to look .Each elephant is known and named .
The trip was well organised with well spaced locations . Charles and his team did all the cooking (Open fires) all cleaning up . This trip exceeded all of our expectations ,so much so that we are booked for another adventure with Twyfelfontein Elephant Drives in 2024 this time in Botswana.
