Well cared for. The 'cross' has several impressive Romanised plaques with the highlights of Wallace's life. Good interpretation boards that add details of his links with Riccarton near Kilmarnock that might well have a stronger claim as his place of birth. The Wallace Yew tree is only 300 years old. It is being well looked after and should be around for a while yet. Plenty of parking. Wallace's House ruins are 16/17th century. Excavations have revealed a fortified structure here at the time of Wallace.

This place is considered a plausible candidate of the birthplace of one of Scotland's national heroes, William Wallace. The major structure here is the monument topped with a crown. Why a crown is a mystery to me as he was never king. The monument has four beautifully crafted bronze relief sculptures showing major events from his life. This place is quite close to Paisley, and only slightly off the beaten track and it's definitely worth a detour if you're in the areas. Especially if you're interested in Scottish history.
