Wilpattu is one of the largest and most prominent national parks in Sri Lanka. The specialty of this park is that it contains over 100 natural lakes that spreads across a land of about 1300 square kilometers. The name Wilpattu has been derived by combining the terms "Willu (lakes)" and Pattu (land). This is located 185km from Colombo, just before Mannar. The park was closed until 2003 due to the Civil War and as of today, it is a highly valued wild life destination for both local and foreign tourists.

Most favorite national park in Sri Lanka. Also the largest among all national parks in Sri Lanka. World famous for Sri Lankan Leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya), Sri Lankan Sloth Bear, Jakals, Spotted Deer, Sambar Deer, Elephants and Wild Tuskers, and hundreds of birds. Reachable about 3-4 from Colombo. A must visit place in Sri Lanka. You won't regret at all.

Not worth to drive around for hours and just seeing a small group of around 5 elephants and several birds .

Beautiful park - we had an afternoon safari and a morning safari the next day. Both roughly 4 hours in duration. Guides were fab and we were lucky enough to see an elephant in the water, as well as a leopard! Much calmer and quieter than the other parks we visited on our tour of Sri Lanka - would definitely recommend this as the best. Be warned - the toilets in the picnic area of the park are interesting and i would avoid if you can! Also watch out for the monkeys in this area - they didn't both us but some people were teasing them with food and lets just say they are not shy!
