You need to know on beforehand some of what you are about to see. This is not an all tourist kind of visit, not a fun park experience. You need good walking shoes, be able to curl up in the back of a small jeep, and fight against heat and thirst in the summer. Guidance was very nice. Explanation is good, and all questions are well answered. It is very impressive what you get to see if you are open to that. But you need a clear eye and a lot of imagination and understanding the age where these drawings were made.…

A short jeep ride on a narrow track down a steep hillside to look at a few rock carvings, mostly very hard to make out. That may not sound too interesting, but to see 20,000 year old artistic renditions of animals and speculate on their meaning -what the artist intended, was fascinating. The guides are passionate about the etching and very informative. The whole story of how these lithographs were saved is remarkable. We visited both Canada do Inferno and Pensacosa, about 2 hours at each. The former has more hiking involved, not at all arduous but unsuitable for those with mobility limits.. Comfortable temperatures in February, reportedly terribly hot in summer. Highly recommended, but do reserve (email or phone),: even in February tour spaces were limited. The surrounding region is stunningly beautiful, with terraces of olive trees, almonds and grapes.…

My wife and I are from the United States visiting Portugal. Since we have an interest in archeology we decided to drive to the Coa Valley and tour the fabulous Parque visiting Rock drawings from about 20,000 BC. We toured with Gloria a congenial and knowledgeable archeologist for about 3 hours in what is a beautiful part of the country. She drove us to the site in her vehicle and we hiked near 3 miles over pretty rough terrain to see the ancient drawings. Don’t miss this experience!…

The Côa Valley has a double value: its wonderful landscape with the vineyards arranged in terrasses and a World famous assemblage of Paleolithic (mostly) carved rocks. There is a nice museum dealing with the latter and organized trips (you are taken in SUVs) to see several sites with petroglyphs. It is worth a visit even if some of the carvings are rather difficult to see depending on the sunlight (there are also night visits using artificial lighting)…
