The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Anping District/ Annan District
Anping District is the area first developed in Taiwan. It is also the key to Taiwan’s involvement in the international community. The two famous historic monuments, Anping Fort (a.k.a. Fort Zeelandia) and Eternal Golden Castle leave behind them the traces of international trade made by various countries. Another historic monument that stands the test of time is Tree House, in which beautiful stories were created along with the running water in the canal in the course of history.
The National Museum of Taiwan History in the form of green building stands in Annan District. Next to the coastal Cihcao Dajhong Temple is the amazingly gorgeous green tunnel formed by mangroves. Moving slowly in the river course on a pipe raft, you will be greeted by hermit crabs and mudskippers. The sunlight glitters in the woods. This will be like a tranquil journey in the no-man Amazon. What comes next is Luermen River estuary. People can enjoy the beautiful sunset in the Natural Defence of the Capital and also visit the one and only temple which has two barefooted door gods of foreign descent, guarding General Jheng Chengkong, making the trip to Tainan full of stories and mysteries.

- Andy FDevizes, United Kingdom1,291 contributionsSlightly DisappointingThere are basically two of three original buildings here. One was destroyed, one is undergoing repairs and covered in scaffolding, leaving just the one main building to visit. There are plenty of stairs up to and inside the building. There are good info boards and photos, but not a huge amounf to see. The views from upstairs aren't great as the place is surrounded by modern developments. More of a historic interest than anything else.Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 7 November 2023
- T-SGlobetrottersPreston, United Kingdom3,807 contributionsNot a great deal to seeThe main attraction of this site is its historical significance as a former Dutch outpost. In truth very little exists of its Dutch origins apart from one long section of castle wall. Much of what is there today was built by the Japanese at the end of the 19th century onwards apart from the building that is now occupied by the Fort Zeelander Museum built by foreign traders in 1882. The museum is not easy to follow with very little natural flow to the exhibits. The observation deck located in the middle of the site is out of keeping with the rest of the architecture. Although it provides views of the surrounding area, these are not especially notable. We had quite high hopes for this attraction but left a little disappointed.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 December 2023
- luxuryvoyageSwitzerland4,016 contributionsOnly recommended in conjunction with a visit to the Anping Tree HouseThe castle is located in the immediate vicinity of the Anping Tree House, which is well worth a visit. It is not worth driving to the castle just for a visit, as the castle is not interesting enough. However, if you are going to the Anping tree house anyway, a quick look at the castle is ok.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 January 2024
- WorldTravelerColumbus, Ohio377 contributionsUnique and well-maintained fortGreat site for some Taiwanese history. See an original Dutch fort, kept in great condition. Walk around and enjoy the sights. Go up in the tower and hopefully see more of the surrounding area. Lots of street food and games for the kids in front of the entrance makes it a lively place.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 10 January 2024
- acornaVilnius, Lithuania4,609 contributionsNot really impressedThere is not much left of the original fort – foundations and part of the wall. There is a small museum, so it is worth to go with a guide who wll tell the story of the place. Old fort was part of our tour and we had good guide, so it was fine, but I am not sure it is the place I would recommend.Visited February 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 22 March 2024
- macedonboyGlasgow, United Kingdom186,397 contributionsMore English Would Be Helpful, But Excellent Museum & Preserved FortThe old fort was first established by the Dutch East India Company before it fell into ruin and then repurposed by the Japanese colonial period. It's fascinating that the Dutch party of the first still remains. The area where you'll probably spend the most time is the Zeelandia Museum. The video documentary on archeology and history is very informative. The major sections of the Zeelandia museum have English, but not the individual exhibits. The second best area is probably the upper section where the surveillance tower is located. It's worthwhile climbing the 4 storeys to get fantastic panoramic views of Anping.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 28 April 2024
- JonasCNSingapore, Singapore4,386 contributionsEscape to aircon from summer heatSummer is scorching hot in Anping Old Street. Anping Old Fort (or former Fort Zeelandia) is a tall landmark that is hard to miss. The entrance is annoying to find as it is not at the Main Street. You need to walk around the main street to another end where there is a ticketing booth. Ticket price is cheap at about NT $70 for adult fare. Opening hours are 8.30am to 5.30pm. The fort is well maintained. The greenery is well pleasant to see and some of the exhibits are interesting like the opium pipe. It is nice but not a must visit place. What I really like about the fort is the air conditioned exhibition area inside the fort. It is a good escape from Anping street that is hot and not sheltered. Overall this fort is not a must visit place. Probably it is a nice aircon place to escape the heat after a nice local food meal.Visited June 2024Travelled soloWritten 20 September 2024

The Fort has an entrance fee (70 or 40 I don't remember exactly). It is located near the tree house. I recommend arriving by bus or bike (preferably pedal-assisted) from the centre, use the youbike app,
You can climb inside.

The fort was mostly reconstructed but still contained a lot of information about the fort, Dutch occupation, their defeat and the subsequent uses by Japan and Taiwan for the property.
The Scouting Deck rose above the fort and had a good view of the Anping area. It was an easy climb. At the top people locked their love wishes to the railings.
The Memorial Hall next to the Scouting Deck contained a gift shop.
The Fort Zeelandia Museum was built next to one of the original Fort walls.
In the back there were a couple of cannons as well as covered excavation area .
Admission was only $50NTD and good for an hour visit.

Historically valuable fort in Anping, built by the Dutch, also known as Zeelandia. The fort has been restored and is very well maintained. The brick walls look inconspicuous compared to European castles, but were practically insurmountable at the time.
The white tower probably dates back to the Japanese occupation, and the roof with the large glass surfaces dates from the 1970s. Unfortunately, these were dirty when we visited, so the view was limited.
A cultural highlight during a stay in Tainan.

The Western architecture of Anping Castle was built during the Japanese occupation. Anping Castle was named after the liberation of Taiwan. The parts to visit today can be roughly divided into the Heritage Memorial Hall (the customs dormitory during the Japanese occupation), the observation tower, the ancient wall historical park, etc. part. Anping Castle was originally built in 1624 and is the earliest fortress building in Taiwan.

I took a taxi because it is near the west coast of Tainan city. The buildings that were maintained during the Japanese rule remain and are now registered as a national historic site. There is also a landmark observation deck of Anping Ancient Fort, so I went up there. From the observation deck, you can also see the view of Tainan, which means it was built near the coast. This will be my third visit here as well.
