About
At the centre of Scotland’s only Pictish Monastic National Monument, the Museum at Tarbat unravels some of the mysteries of the Picts, explaining through its award winning archaeology programme fascinating details about these enigmatic people and their way of life on this intensely historic peninsula. ‘A’ Listed Tarbat Old Parish Church, home to the Discovery Centre, is in itself an historic timeline of six churches that have stood on this site with the remains of part of the crypt dating from as early as the 8th century. On display, beautiful sculpture and craft-working objects, architectural features, local exhibitions, photo archives and detailed interpretation provide the contents of our Museum – ‘a real gem of history well worth the visit.'

A favourite place

We had the Centre (and the enthusiastic guide) to ourselves and were free to admire the collection of Pictish carvings for as long as we want. The storyboards give an excellent introduction to the Pictish artefacts and to the important monastic and artistic past of Portmahomack. There's a tempting shop too and purchases benefit the Centre,

A museum in an old church. The church is on the site of an early Pictish monastery from the 8th century

A good collection of artefacts and good quality interpretations

Excellent Visit
Aug 2020
We managed to get a pre-booked visit and it was well worth booking. Outside the Church are information boards with reconstructions of what it would have looked like formerly. Inside the building is a most impressive museum which is very well laid out considering the space available. There is a small video to watch before you go round the museum. The history of the site and artefacts are really well presented and several Pictish stones or fragments on display. It was nice to have the museum with only 1 other couple there and plenty time (1 hour) to go round. Covid precautions very good. A nice little gift shop as well. A lot to take in in one visit but well worth the drive.

My Colleague didn't know about the center and we agreed to make a visit. My wife tagged along. Because of Covid there are restrictions the three of us got an hour which of course wasn't long enough, and we will be back.
The Museum is amazing. Brilliant artefacts and a fascinating history.
There is a small but we'll stocked shop.
We will be back a lot more to take in it is brilliant

A real gem!

Due to COVID, the museum is open by appointment only, which actually worked really well, it meant a whole museum to yourself! There are just so many artefacts on display, Pictish stones galore and really interesting information on the excavation that took place at the church. They have packed a lot into this little space and it is well worth booking ahead to get a visit in. They have some ancestry information available too, if you are doing some research into that. The volunteers are friendly and welcoming. My husband uses a scooter, and was able to access most of the exhibits too, which was lovely considering how old the church is. Well worth an explore.

Worth a visit

Great little museum with lots to see and understand. Volunteer Jim brought the history alive telling us interesting facts inside and about the graves outside. It was fascinating and learnt more for him being there. Ten minutes DVD and little gift shop. Afterwards walk to the lighthouse and along the front of Portmahomack. Lovely day.
