Bukit Keluang is a hill beside the sea. The silhouette can be seen from Perhentian Islands. Its seafront is a tall cliff, like a wall, with breathtaking view of the surrounding from the top of the hill. It was only around 10-15 min car ride to the south of Kuala Besut. The start of the hike was a fleet of stairs, and then it was soil trail all the way to the top. It was steep at the beginning of the hike and proper shoes were needed for the hike. There were ropes throughout this part of the trail to help the hike.

Halfway, the trail became less steep and undulating. At the viewpoint, there was handrails erected to block access to the edge of the cliff and a large wooden shade with many rows of wooden benches, suitable for resting but not for sightseeing, since the bush blocked the view over the edge of the cliff. A few steps further, the bush opened up for a rewarding seafront view of the surrounding coast. Care was needed when approaching the edge of the cliff, which was an almost vertical drop down to the coastline below.

There were some wildlife sighted such as squirrel, monitor lizard and colourful birds. Along the trail, especially around the top of the hill, there were several rubbish bin provided and no rubbish was seen strewn along the trail (I was here during a week day in the afternoon). The hike took around 30 min or more, and in my opinion, is one of the best short hikes in Malaysia. At the foothill, there was a toilet and a row of stalls selling foods and drinks. Bukit Keluang Beach was just within a short walking distance, where shades and huts with seats could be found.

My house is just 5 minutes from this beach. I have visited this beach on numerous occasions. This place is packed with people on Friday and Saturday as these two days are weekends of Terengganu instead of Saturday and Sunday like other states of Malaysia.

Beach is safe to swim but not during the monsoon. Monsoon starts from October until February every year. As it is a muslim country, it is not advisable to swim in bikini.

The main attractions of this beach is Keluang Hill. There are two trails to get up here. Basically it is just one trail but you can start from both end. The first one located near the stalls and the trails starts with stairs. The second starting/exit point is steeper but you can reach the top within 15 minutes (for fit person). It will take around 1 hour to finish from end to end.

The view from the top is beautiful as you can see Pulau Perhentian and also Pulau Rhu. You can also watch sunrise from here.

Parking is not a problem but you might find difficulties to find public transport. A lot of stall selling local food available at the foothill. Toilet is also available.

The hill is open for all as there are no guard/officer man the entrance. Try to get a local tour provide like Jenoba Outdoor to bring you up there so that you can get more knowledge about the hill. And will be safer too.

Bukit Keluang is about 1 hour 30 minutes drive from Kota Bharu. Here, you can do at least three activities which are hiking, snorkeling and fishing.
1. Hiking
For hiking, the trail is not too hard for a beginner like me. That was my first time hiking in my life. But you need to be extra careful as certain spot is so steep. It took us about only 20 minutes include a few minutes rest (well you know that was my first time hiking). The scenery on the hill was breathtaking!
2. Snorkeling
After hiking (which we finished on the afternoon), me and my friends went to the beach and ride banana boat to Pulau Rhu. At Pulau Rhu, we do snorkeling.
You can snorkeling even if you do not know how to swim. And do not worry as there are 2 workers took care of us when we snorkel. The coral are pretty (but quite dangerous. it is advisable to wear sock to avoid your feet from scratching and bleeding). You can see many aquatic animals there.
3. Fishing
I saw a lot of people fishing at the river that are about to connect with the sea. The place is opposite direction with the beach. The view there also are very nice and the water are so clear!
My advise for those who are planning to come here (based on my experience) are;
1. Please wear a suitable shoes for hiking as it can be very slippery when you want to hike the Bukit Keluang.
2. Bring along a slipper when you walk along the beach or if you want to carry out activities at the beach.
3. Do not forget to bring waterproof camera if you want to snorkel.
My overall experience here are wonderful except for the trash that visitors left everywhere.

I took a drive along the coastal from Kuantan to Kota Bahru, and this was one of the many beaches that i passed along. It was simply beautiful and less crowded with people. A stroll on the beach would relax and unwind your mind. Definitely a must visit place.

There are 2 way up, since my taxi driver drop mw there, so I went up through the stairs near to the beach, the stairs is opposite to the public toilet.

The ascend is about 35-50 mins. The fisrt part is the stairs, follow by a steep hike, after that will be easy jungle path, on the way up, will have 3-4 up and down hill hike. Along the way, will have a few view points, do watch up your step, is cliff if u miss.
Descending took 30 minutes.

If your are on the way to p.perhentian, why x make a stop here before or after, to watch this sence.

Sunrise and sunset will be nice there. Due to my schedule, i was hiking ard 930-1130am. Is a great hike.

Have fun.

Bukit Kluang beach situated at Besut, Terengganu. It is about 15km from Jerteh. This place will be crowded with local during weekend. If you want to find any accommodation nearby, there are many chalet and homestay such ah Bukit Keluang Beach Resort. You can also go hiking at bukit keluang. The view is really amazing as you can see Perhentian Island from there.
