Lovely floriferous garden with many clever ideas
Jul 2021
We had a lovely morning at Perch Hill. We found it a real inspiration with lots of colour and ideas for filling in with annuals where perennials were over. Sarah Raven’s clever use of natural birch and hazel to make plant supports was a very useful idea which I hope to replicate in my own garden. We were dismayed by the reviews from other visitors which we found unhelpful and untrue. We are dedicated gardeners and we’re very impressed by Perch Hill.

Not value for money, Needs more thought to visitor experience.
Jul 2021
I'd like to say first of all that I an admirer of Sarah Raven and her brand. I have grown plants from her seeds and cooked from her recipe books.

However, during our visit felt a bit like a processed pea, until I found a place to relax and reflect amongst the washing at the back door.

We booked for a garden visit and lunch which I do not feel was value for money at £30 each.

The garden is very nice and its great to see the plants in situ, but it felt very rushed before lunch was served.

The lunch of Beetroot tart with salad and four new potatoes was delish, but that was it. No desert, zilch, surely there could have been a little something.. The plate was served with a glass of cordial, which I'm sad to say my husband described as dishwater.. It was meant to be rhubarb.. Such a shame!

I'm sorry to have to be negative about such a special place, but there needs to be more thought to visitor experience.

Sarah is not doing herself, nor her home and garden, justice.

Lovely morning at Sarah Raven's Perch hill farm
Jul 2021 • Couples
Had a lovely morning at Perch hill, Sarah Raven's garden. It's not a massive place but full of colour and proper old English country garden planting. Most plants are labelled so you can copy any groups you really like or just make a note of the varieties. I found it very useful noting what would work in the shady parts of my garden and ways of grouping flowers to get a whole summer of colours. The sweetpeas were flowering in abundance and the scent beautiful.
The cafe offered homemade cakes and drinks which were very tasty and the shop was well stocked with books, gardening equipment, vases for your own grown flowers and seeds for many of the varieties chosen and grown in her garden.
Will definitely return and recommend to anyone who wants to grow their own cottage cutting garden.

Poor experience
Apr 2021
Underwhelmed with my first visit in April 2021. I expected a large garden and it's really rather small. The planting was average, certainly not stunning. Having read some reports of a lovely day out ,it was really disappointing. The cost of entry is very steep. We had seen everything in an hour. The shop is rubbish, no plants and overpriced merchandise. Overpriced food too. I am also dissapointed with the plants which I ordered this year. Not good quality , very poor tulips this year from my September order. I had much more success with those bought from our local market, cheaper too. I will not be using Sarah Raven again.

Bizarre lunch at Perch Hill
Jun 2021 • Couples
A place worth visiting if gardens and horticulture are your things. I’d booked lunch as a surprise for my wife and we arrived full of expectation. A good many other people were also attending ... maybe 60 or so to be catered for in the marquee. Got off to a good start as we were amongst the first to be seated ... unfortunately it was at this point that we apparently inadvertently pulled on our invisibility cloaks. Those around us, many of them later arrivals than us, had their order taken ... received their food ... ate their food, with evident enjoyment ... and got up and left the marquee ... whilst we were still waiting patiently to give our order to somebody. It was completely bizarre and baffling. Even people on adjoining tables were conscious of the situation and some commiserated with us ... which did at least help to pass the time. Eventually, as the marquee was emptying, our order was rather sheepishly taken ... but the poor member of staff returned a few minutes later to break the sad news to me that they’d run out of the option I’d ordered. It would have been tragic if it hadn’t been so laughable. Despite the entertainment value it did unfortunately spoil what was an otherwise pleasant experience. An experience I’d actually built a five day East Sussex break around. If you’re thinking of given it a go, my only advise is don’t be first to be seated ... wear something that stands out ... and take a good book.

Very underwhelmed all round.....
May 2021
I have visited this garden a couple of years ago on a day cut flower course with lunch and I really enjoyed the experience. In fairness it was September and the garden was full of Dahlias and was inspirational. The lunch was generous and delicious.
I decided to take a friend for the garden visit including lunch last week.
What a difference? The garden was particularly underwhelming and there was no-one to ask about the plants . The tulips had all died back now so there wasn't a huge amount to see. The gift shop is pretty poor, no knowledge of garden plants and also no plants to buy -why ? The shop was just full of packets of seeds and coloured vases and Sarah Raven books.
As regards the lunch -there were 4 choices and only 2 were available as the others were apparently sold out by 12.15 pm [ we arrived at 11.30am ] ? So no ham or quiche weirdly.
There was a glass of cordial offered [no other choice] and when I asked for another glass , I was begrudgingly given one -perhaps a small sharing jug might have been nicer or even some water? No-one to ask for cutlery either-so ploughed on with a fork. So for £15 it was a few leaves of lettuce a couple of falafels , half a pitta bread , a grated carrot salad. a couple of new boiled potatoes and some yoghurt to dip them in. Nothing else-very uninteresting. The lady serving then unbelievably scraped our plates on top of each others in front of us as though we were back at school?! We felt very rushed and uncared for.
Pretty poor show all round. It was another £15 to walk around a garden with not much in it and no-one to speak to. It all felt very lack lustre to say the least and way too expensive for £30 each for a couple of hours experience .

The best thing was the weather and a cup of tea in a paper cup bought from the shop after lunch . By reading everyone else's reviews , I can see that I am not alone. I think this all needs to be reviewed as obviously things have slipped pretty badly and its a great shame as I have been a fan of SR for years. I would not return and would not buy a voucher as a gift in the future either . It all felt like one big money making exercise -at least make people feel valued and give value for money?

Huge disappointment
May 2021 • Friends
What a disappointment. So expensive for a very disappointing experience!
The signage was non existent, finding someone to ask meant going to shop. Only then realised that’s where you could purchase a hot drink.
The bulbs were over and I honestly can say I have friends whose gardens are extensive and better.
All that way to leave with bewilderment as to what we paid for ?!

Sadly underwhelmed ...
Apr 2021
Fairly underwhelmed sadly with the Open Garden Event on 23 April 2021. The directions were good and the car park etc was well organised however, the Gardens themselves are fairly ordinary and most of the tulips seemed to have 'gone over'. We had a two hour slot (so pleased we didn't spend even more on the lunch provided) and only needed 20-30 minutes tops to view the gardens. What we were most surprised with was the lack of interesting/unusual/shop goods to purchase. No cut flowers, no bulbs, very few vases or similar. There were a few stakes or similar, seed packets available and we were amazed there were no bulbs to purchase although we have purchased several online and have been thrilled with the result in our garden. We took some photographs and after 25 minutes decided to leave. Many missed opportunities and thank heavens we only had a 1.5 hour drive to find Perch Hill!!!

Don’t bother. Hugely disappointing.
Apr 2021 • Couples
Very disappointing. The gardens were pretty but not particularly well tended. Really all that was on display were millions of tulips. Our main gripe was how very expensive the experience was and how little we got for our money. We paid £30 each for entry to the garden and lunch. For that we saw a lot of tulips as mentioned above and received a one course meal. The plate of food was nice but for £30 it was miserly. We were given a cold weak cordial - no choice of beverage was offered. There was no bread, no dessert or cake or hot drink. This is what you’d expect to pay for lobster or fillet steak at a top restaurant not quiche and salad in a cold marquee. Go to Wisley much cheaper huge amounts more to see and their cafe is good.
A disappointing rip off.
