About
At the north-east point of Dashu Township in Kaohsiung county, South Taiwan, Fo Guang Shan Monastery (literally translated as Buddha’s Light Mountain Monastery) sits on a bamboo hill on the left bank of the Gaoping river. Here you will find the headquarters of a prominent Buddhist order, established by Master Hsing Yun and his disciples. The architecture of the buildings within the monastery complex is characteristic of the traditional Buddhist monastery, but one may be pleasantly surprised with the array of visitor-friendly amenities on offer. The southeastern face of Fo Guang Shan Monastery features the prominent Great Buddha Land, which is home to a standing Buddha image of 48 metres in height, and 480 smaller Buddha images that surround it. English-speaking visitors may find information and maps in English at the Reception, and prior contact via email can be made to discuss free tour options.

- Steven SPattaya, Thailand782 contributionsMassive complexI took the E02 bus from bay 3 bus station outside MRT Zouying station. TWD70 each way or use your Easycard. This temple is one massive complex of buildings. Free entry. Quite hilly but they do provide a buggy service at what cost I don't know. I visited the main shrine, the walk through museum, the garden area and the great buddha surrounded by many many life size buddha statues. I probably could have stayed longer but the walking was taxing and I had to move on to the buddha museum.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 5 November 2023
- macedonboyGlasgow, United Kingdom186,766 contributionsLovely Monastery With Impressive StatueI visited this monastery after almost a whole day in the associated Fo Guang Shan Buddha Museum. It’s a working monastery, but it was late in the day when I visited, so it was quite quiet. The main thing to see as a tourist is the 120 metre tall golden statue of Buddha Amitabha on the rooftop platform, which also has 480 standing Buddhas, mostly arranged around the boundary of the walking paths and around the aforementioned giant statue. It’s quite a climb to the roof area, but the statues and views are worth it.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 1 May 2024

I took the bus here from Kaohsiung which was easy and hassle free. You can easily spend the whole day here at Fo Guang Shan but we spent a solid half day here. Visit the museum, Buddha statue, temples, and everything else within the Fo Guang Shan area. Everything here is truly massive and beautiful. Highly recommend!Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 September 2024

Our tour stopped in the afternoon at Fo Guang Shan Monastery for a guided hour by a English-speaking monk. It was a wonderful journey into the land of Buddha.
I learned that Fo Guang Shan Monastery is the largest Buddhist monastery in Taiwan. This organization is one of the largest in Taiwan with many branches around then world.
Great Buddha Standing Statue:
The Great Buddha Standing Statue is the highlight of Fo Guang Shan Monastery.
It is located up a short hill once you enter the monastery. The Great Buddha Standing Statue (36 meters high) is a huge statue of a standing Buddha that is surrounded by 480 small Buddhas statues. The statue is the most popular sight at the monastery and it is very impressive.
The Main Shrine and the Way to Buddhahood Path:
The Main Shrine is the main shrine at Fo Guang Shan with three sitting Buddha statues. The interior four walls are filled with stone niches enshrining 14,800 more statues of the Sakyamuni Buddha surrounding the shrine. It is an incredible sight to see.
The Great Compassion Shrine:
The Great Compassion Shrine contains a 6-meter-high statue of Guan Yin in 8,600 square feet garden symbolizing the light of Buddha encompass all people. It is a nice garden with peace and tranquility.
I can see and feel the ENLIGHTENMENT... at the Fo Guangzhou Shan Monastery.

We wanted to go to the Museum complex, but it was closed. We were directed to the complex next door; which is the Monastery. After climbing the hill, we were at the base of a 90 foot tall Buddha statue. Nearby are many hundreds of smaller statues. We walked to some of the buildings. The main shrine does not allow photos inside (but one can take photos at the enterance). There are thousands of little Buddha statues in that building. One can avoid the steps if they are careful.

Thank you for your feedback. Indeed, the Monastery is a large complex, and we recommend at least a whole day to see it all.

Definitely worth a visit, and relatively easy to access from Tainan. Take the train (TRE) south to Kaohsiung, then bus 8050 from there to the site. Not all 8050 buses go all the way to the site so ask the driver (they all know the name). The Memorial Center has all the tourist amenities (excellent food sources, gift shops, the world's biggest bronze seated Buddha, etc., etc.) but it's all a bit like Buddhist Disney. If you're interested in getting a real feel for the place, hop off the bus at the monastery (1 stop from the end), which you'll know when you see a massive structure loom to your left. Follow the maps from there. It can be quite serene.
There's also a place to stay overnight in that monastic complex, a bit upscale but lovely. We didn't do that, but would consider it in the future.
The point of the complex is to bring in enough money from outsiders to keep the place going, and missionize elsewhere. Know that going in, and decide how you want to organize your visit.

This was the main attraction on our port day in Kaohsiung when I organized a group tour in a chartered bus for 34 passengers on our cruise. All our group members were excited and enjoyed their visits at this location. The Great Buddha was definitely attractive and the museum provided plenty of information for all visitors about the place. It was relaxing just wandering around even under the heat and ended with a lunch at the vegetarian restaurant.

I was here yesterday as part of my pan-Taiwan tour. There was a prayer going on in the main hall and the chants were resonating around the monastery. It was astounding. The ambience. The atmosphere. The people. The monks were so kind - women wear black and men wear brown. This is also a university campus with halls and dedicated prayer rooms. It was so nice to walk around the massive place to see the different people engaging in their daily monasterical activities. The key piece is the massive golden statue of Buddha himself surrounded by many little ones. I could spend a day here and still come off wanting more. It is around half-anhour drive from the city.

We visited the monastery on Tuesday when the museum with the large Buddha statue is closed and I must say that the choice was the best because in this way we dedicated a large part of the day to visiting this area well and instead the next day we returned visiting the museum in the morning. We also arrived here by taking the E02 bus which leaves from Kaohsiung station at a low cost. Free admission. There are maps to better visit the complex which is full of monasteries, various temples, veg restaurants, gardens, a standing Buddha statue etc. You can take photos, except in the internal rooms. The staff is very kind and helps you in any way.

The mornings are usually quieter and cooler, thanks.

(Apologies for the delay as I have been traveling). There are multiple holy shrines available to enter—in the main welcome hall building, on the grounds, and up the hill at the monastery. I would simply pose your question directly to the Foa Guang Shan staff. I hope this helps re-direct you for a more thorough and accurate answer.

Is Fo Guang Shan museum closed on Tuesday? If so is there anything else to visit at FSG? Thanks
Written 9 December 2018
Hello, Although the Museum is closed on Tuesdays, the rest of Fo Guang Shan is open. There are many shrines to visit at the Monastery, and many spiritual experiences to try.

It is advisable to arrange accommodation in Kaohsiung if you wish to visit Fo Guang Shan, since it will take at least the entire day to see it all.

Hi, Mark. we will arrive by ship on Feb 1 and am interested in this attraction. can you elaborate a bit and what there is to see, as well as best way to get there (and Buddha Museum). thanks for any info you can offer.
Written 29 August 2018
Hi Tiger
I’ve been a month at Fo Guang monastery and seen it. So you have to prioritize according to your interests.
The Buddha museum is impressive in size and shows the huge achievement of the founder and the venerables in a very approachable way for a large audience as well as it is a beautiful and impressive temple.
Visiting the monastery you’ll meet the venerables who participated in this achievement over the last 50 years in their daily routine and environment. At the monastery are museums as well by the way.
If you have time I would advice you to stay overnight at the lodge (you can make a reservation) and rise at 5.30 with the sound of the bell & drum and see and hear the morning chant at the main shrine. It will touch your heart.
