Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Hualien sugar factory
There are more than 20 flavors in the ice cream parlor. They got ice cream cones, sundaes, ice pop, ice cream bars, and coffee with ice cream on top!
My favorite one is the brandy ice cream cone. oh! And for people who drive a car don’t worry about that, it's non-alcoholic.
As a student studying in Hualien for 4 years, I really recommend you to visit here. This sugar factory was established in 1921, sugar manufacturing business ended in 2002, so the place was reused as a tourism attraction.
There is a farmers' market across from the ice cream parlor. I bought a cup of coconut water mixed with milk every time I visit the sugar factory, it’s only 30 NT dollars!!!

Now lets be realistic here.

You don't travel to Hualien to visit the sugar factory. Hualien is known for it's natural beauty, hiking trails, mountains and gorges. And that is really where you would spend most of your time.

I happen to have visited the Sugar Factory site several times, though i have never toured the museum. The spot most people visit when they come here is the site with the ponds and souvenir stalls. Its great for a few photos and if you want to pick up a few things to take home or grab something quick to eat.

And yes as mentioned in other reviews they do sell Ice cream too. And it's pretty good Ice cream by Taiwan standards (but different to what i get back home in Australia)

Visit this spot if you have the time, or if you just want to buy a few souvenirs and have a rest during your travels.

Guangfu is small town, they need this Sugar Factory to be "alive" as a means to draw in tourist dollar to help to revive the economies of the town in a way. Don't take it negatively, as townfolks there are hardworking people, so despite " the lacking " , we still have to appreciate their effort in a way.

The sugar factory is attempting to have a more "theme park feel" , sorry to say, they failed.

For those who enjoy , bicycling and sightseeing some parts of rural Hualien, I guess this can be a plus.
The best part of this factory is its wide selection of Ice creams , their ice creams are quite good surprisingly !!! A plus factor !!
Their wasabi flavoured ice cream is damn good !!! Eating single serving of ice cream is just a pure sin, so get those money out , try more !!!!

The rest of the food joint, not sure. BUT the ice cream there , its a must !

Maybe we arrived too late on a weekday at 4+pm. The shops were either closed or closing. There was only a pond with some fishes. Only thing that made the trip worthwhile was the ice cream. The ice cream was considered rich and creamy compared to those washed down version in danshui.

I've been here a few times. It's mostly a place that you can wander through and check out local crafts, some of which are excellent. There are a few refreshment stands in here but there is a huge carp pool and some of those fish are enormous. Cute place to stop of for a quick break and a wander to stretch your legs.

Is one of the spot on our tour, is interesting, but ok. We had ice-dream (durian flavor) which was good, and the gold fish there eat the ice-cream that you cannot finish.

If you are a museum and history person, you can well use your imagination here. This was one of the manufacturing sites of the once very prosperous and strategic sugar industry of Taiwan. Now converted into a popular tourist attraction spot.
Certainly no lack of restaurants, cafe, food kiosks and souvenir supermarket. Highlights is the must-try ice-cream. Numerous flavors and combinations. Very gratifying when the outside temperature is 33C and you are soaked in sweat. The train engine brings you back to the scene when sugar cane and processed products were busily transported in and out the factory.... A row of wooden Japanese-style bungalows around the factory also creates feelings of nostalgia. Relaxing!

The icecream is fresh and very good value. Some ok eateries nearby, and the entire complex is possible to explore by bike. There is a live water buffalo car, for people to take photos together with animal. Not a bad place to start exploring the area.
