The place that I must introduce is Kenting National Park. Kenting is located in southern Taiwan. The scenery there is exquisite. There are mountains and also sea. You can not only enjoy the sunlight, but also see Eluanbi Lighthouse at Baishawan Beach. Moreover, there are lots of colorful coral under the sea which makes Kenting National Park really famous. Besides, there is also a small race track where tourists can experience racing. When the night comes, Kenting Street Night Market will be filled with people. Kenting Street Night Market is the place you must visit if you are in Kenting. After enjoying the beautiful scenery of Kenting during the daytime, you can have some special traditional food here since there are many vendors on the street. Also, it is a good idea to have some cups of drink in the bar and spend your wonderfuI night here.

There are lots of nice scenic views in this huge National Park. It offers beautiful breathtaking views of the mountains, cliffs, coastline and sea. There are some nice trails, some have broad walks so lots of places for exploring. There are plenty of wildlife. Great place to visit and relax.

Was angry and frustrated to learn that swimming is not allowed at the main beach in Kenting. Go to small beach "Xiao Wan" or white sand beach "baisha wan" instead. Cannot see any logic to this ridiculous waste of prime beach. Does anyone know the reason?
To make things worse, you can see people swimming at part of the beach at Chateau hotel but swimming there is only allowed for hotel guests.

Kenting National Park is pretty big.
Kenting is a small little town at the southern tip of Taiwan. It's part of what is essentially a small network of towns, beaches, and parks that make up this very interesting area. The Kenting National Park basically includes most of this land mass, but there are two separate areas I'll mention that are accessible from around Kenting itself.
The first area is Eluanbi (鵝鑾鼻). This area is the southernmost tip of Taiwan, along with Maobitou. It's most known as the home of the Eluanbi Lighthouse, also know by some as the Light of East Asia for its intensity. It's on the east side of the island, and is a 5-10 minute bus ride from the Kenting city center. Tourist buses don't always go there, especially on non-holidays or weekends, but there are cheap local buses (even from the same company) that make the trip about twice an hour.
Entrance into the Eluanbi park costs a small fee (100 NT, I believe). Inside, there are walkways and trails to explore the area. There isn't too much special to note besides that you get to see the ocean from the southernmost tip of Taiwan. The land in this area of Taiwan is mostly old coral, which allows for some very interesting erosion and land patterns. There are a few interesting formations to look at and walk through. The lighthouse itself is worth a short gander, as well. There's a small explanation room that talks about the compound and some of the items associated with it. The lighthouse's history reads like an action movie. At the end, people will try to sell you some stuff as you leave.
We did this area in about 30 minutes, because we wanted to catch the next bus back. We didn't feel as though we missed anything in particular, but you could comfortably spend an hour here.
The second area is up a mountain (hill?) from the large entrance thing to the Kenting National Park that is in the town of Kenting itself. There's a long windy road to get to the entrance from the town, that could take an hour or so to walk up. The drive though, is pretty short - maybe like 6 - 10 minutes, so don't let people charge you too much to get you up there. There are also infrequent buses that go up. If you're feeling up to it, people here would probably be willing to drive you back down in their personal cars too.
This area is much larger than the last. It costs between 100-150 NT to get in (maybe more on popular days). It's a pretty large area to travel and took us around 3 hours to get through all of it, though it can be done more quickly. The map gives a great breakdown of the area, complete with the network of paths and estimates of walking time and distance.
The walk in this area is awesome. The paths are generally well paved (though there are portions that have stairs) and maintained. There are general attractions, like caves, coral formations, viewing platforms and then a plethora of curated botanical garden collections.
The botanical garden collections are nice places to walk, even if you're not familiar or interested in trees at all, though they do try to explain the background of each collection. There are many different collections spread throughout the first part of the park.
The other attractions are mostly places to view interesting natural formations, like caves and fissures and canyons, or places to see where the Banyan and fig tree roots have taken over the landscape. The caves are very cool. They aren't extremely large, but they are definitely interesting. These are carved out of the natural coral that developed on this area of the Taiwan landmass. Similarly, different canyons and fissures throughout the park also display the effects of land movement on the brittle corral of this area.
The banyan and fig trees have taken over some parts of the forest, especially in the second part of the park. These trees are experts at thriving in this harsh soil environment by using their roots to either tap deeply into the ground or to branch out and to seek it out. One tree can take up an incredible amount of space - and it's hard to know where one tree ends and another begins.
One of the highlights is the viewing platform. It's 7 stories tall and provides a wonderful view of the surrounding area. You can see the coast in for 200 degrees around you, and just get a sense of the scale of the park. Make sure that after you take the elevator to the 6th floor that you take the stairs up to the 7th floor. You also get some insight into the area and some of the history and geology.
Anyway, I hope that was enough detail to help you out. I obviously really liked this place, and I thought it was affordable and manageable in terms of people and temperature (though this was a warm winter weekend, and I imagine both of these would be worse in the height of summer).

Don't just stay in the busy touristy town of Kenting. It is famous because of the beautiful nature that surrounds it. Kenting National Forest Recreation Area is one of a kind.
It has a display of a great variety of tropical vegetation and insects in their natural habitat. The tourist centre inside is a bit primitive though. But don't mix up with the big and informative Kenting National Park Visitor Centre at Tanziwan. The "Recreation Area" (funny that it is so called) is located in the outskirt of Kenting. It is a short drive from the town of Kenting. Drive along the Gongyuan Road to Sheding, near to top of the hill.
In Kenting National Forest Recreation Area there are well-planned paved walks designed to suit different duration. Well-marked trails, very safe. One should reserve a minimum of 1.5 hours to spend there, but that will mean rushing to see the sights. For a meaningful trip, I would recommend 3 to 3.5 hours to go round the whole area. So start in the morning and return to town for lunch will be a good idea because it is cooler. I visited the big Visitor Centre in Tanziwan after an early lunch, then go to the Recreation Area at around 2:30 p.m. in May. That is still ok, not very hot. The Park closes after 5 p.m. but one can have no problem getting out.
On a nice day, one can see the peninsula and as far as Maobitou. Even in hot days, there are beautiful, cool limestone caves to get refreshed. In the middle of the forest area, there is even a small kiosk offering drinks and providing toilet facility.

kenting was one of the two main places i had wanted to visit when in taiwan, despite being told there wasn't much to see especially during december. i was glad i made the trip there although it was a rather rush one. we hired a taxi from kaohsiung to take us to several places namely :-
lion's head mountain - from a distance it looks like a lion's head but it looked more like the "voldemort" to us
"monkey's head mountain - a short distance away from the lion's head mountain and this one looks more like its description. a short drive southwards will take you to a stretch of rocky beach. look closely and you will notice that the waves actually move outwards from the shore. this is due to the wind that blows down from the mountain slopes
glass bottom boat ride - this one's not at the "houbihu harbour". it's a small fishing village and from the ride which takes about 30 to 45 minutes you can see the natural underwater world. the view would be better on a sunny day
baishawan - a stretch of golden sandy beach which is perfect for swimming but not in winter months though
houbihu harbour - there are many restaurants here serving fresh seafood and sashimi. for a reasonable price we had a sumptuous 7 course meal
sail rock - a rock that resembles more like a person's head partly submerged in water. this is a nice place for an evening stroll in winter just like what we did
windblown sand and look out spot - a magnificent view of the ocean and its surrounding area but if could get very very windy to the extent that you can't balance yourself. next to it is the windblown sand dune and due to the strong wind you can actually see the sand flying and feel it on your face too
jialeshui - it's a coastal stretch of rocks in all sort of shapes. you would spot shapes like snail, pig's carcass, mini statue of buddha (which we took ages to figure out), taiwan map and some unidentifiable others. the best part was we just hopped onto a tram which took us for a ride along the coast. when we visited, the waves were huge and scary.
chuhuo - this is a must go - there are fires on the ground and they don't seem to die. you could buy a pan of buttered corn kernels and heat it over the fire and watch the corns go popping...our plastic film covering the pan caught fire and the corn kernels went popping all over..it was fun
i would advise an overnight stay at kenting so that you could cover more places than we did on a day's tour

Instead of saying what I like or dislike, maybe it's better to share some tips if you are making plans to visit the place.
*Admission Fees on weekdays = NTD 100 ( I went on weekday so I am not sure about the rest)
*Direct bus available from Hengchun Transfer Station located near South Gate of Hengchun Old Town. Hengchun Transfer Station is the bus terminal in Hengchun Township. Buses are not frequent but the service staff are very polite and will remind you again and again when to get ready for the bus if you keep wandering away. There is a convenience store next to the bus terminal. :)
*If you really want to explore the park, factor about 3 hours for the park. Otherwise, 1.5 hours should be enough.
*There are 3 big designated areas. If you are going to Area 2, then factor in some more hours. Area 3 is out of bounds as far as I know...
*I stumbled upon an eco tour group recommended by the national park personnel who seemed to have collaborated with a local university to tout ecotourism. It was a pleasant surprise because my trip to Kenting was not the usual beach affair. I got to learn about wildlife and botany.
*I won't recommend an eco tour group if you knew how to get to the park, how to travel within the park which really had a lot of signage and explanation on the "exhibits" in it.

We booked a taxi for a whole day excursion of the Kenting area from Kaoshiung. After leaving Kaoshiung, we travelled along Highway 26 heading south towards the Kenting Forest Recreation Area. Taking almost 1 hour, 45 minutes to reach, the forest park was a bit of a disappointment as some exhibits were in need of maintenance. Nonetheless, it was worth walking the 1 km to the viewing tower to have a good bird eyes view of the whole Kenting area all the way to Eluanpi. Entrance fee is 150NT for adult and 10NT for seniors about 65. After spending an hour and a half, we continued south to Eluanpi Park. From the huge carpark, the park features the lighthouse and a nice view of the Bashi Strait. Again there's an entrance fee of 60NT for adult. The lighthouse is operational, so visitors are not allowed, but you could a nice photo shot. Being at the southern most tip of Taiwan, the wind was gusty. there is no access to the beach as we are on a cliff. After lunch, we proceeded further along Highway 26 to Longpan Park. Just parking of the road, we walked to the lookout and had a wonderful view of the vast Pacific Ocean. Needless to say, the wind was gusty and we had difficulty holding on to our mobile phone when taking photos. From Longpan Park, we turn around an headed Northeast to Maopitou Park. Here, the crowd of tourist was evident from the large number of tour buses. After paying 30NT entrance fee to walked along the pavement to the several lookouts. It was hard to imagine the cat's nose by staring at the cliff jutting into the ocean. Again, the wind was gusty and we had to hold on to our hats. After Maopitou, we headed north towards Paisa Beach. Looking at the long line of tourists buses, we decided not to stop and continued the journey along the coastal highway towards Chechen and then onward to Kaoshiung. All in our journey took just over 8 hours. The taxi was arranged by the hotel and we paid 4000NT directly to the taxi driver.

Been to Kenting so many times but still not tired to go there again and again, and enjoy the overall atmosphere even more than the beautiful nature! Would strongly advice the following places:
- Eluanbi lighthouse park, just a short scooter ride from Kenting main street, beautiful meadows, luxurious tropical flora, great views of the Kenting bay.
- Long Pan scenic area - As you reach the Eluanbi lighthouse park on the national Road 26, just ride on a few km and the road will take you up above the coastline. The number of local people (I don't remember having seen much foreigners at this spot!) stopping along the way and walking towards the cliffs will tell you where the most beautiful scenic points are. Just enjoy the breeze and the fantastic views of the Pacific.
- Hou Bi Hu is the little village (with attached small wharf) where you can taste some among the best fresh fish and seafood in the Kenting area (probably better and fresher than the one you find alone Kenting main street, and a lower price). It is not far from the Bai Sha beach (take the same diversion out of the National Road 26, few km north of South Bay). Head straight for the restaurants inside the big building by the wharf, choose the fresh stuff by your self and tell them how you want it to be cooked. Your hotel staff in Kenting know where the place is.
Before I forget, it is highly advisable to rent a scooter (700~800 TWD/day) to tour all the locations you wish to see nearby, avoid cars or taxis as you may be easily trapped in traffic jams, especially at early evening.

My boyfriend and I stayed in Kenting for a week in May of 2007. Because we had never been there before and there wasn't much to find out online we booked a resort for 4 days then found a smaller hotel (which in retrospect was better than the resort) for last two days. Because we went during the off season it wasn't busy, we rented scooters and owned the road. There are no taxi's so scooter's are essential. There is a good choice of restaurants and places to shop. We went to Baisha white sand beach (camping available here) and were the only ones there. We went to the harbour and had a glass bottom boat to ourselves. We chartered a catamaran sailing boat with a guy named Bud and spent a good hour on the ocean. Because Kenting is a National Park there are lots of nature trails to explore and Eulanbi Lighthouse is only a 20 minute ride away at the most southern tip of the peninsula. Most Taiwanese people say not to stay for more than 3 days because there's not much to do but if you want to have relaxing, leisurely stay and see and do a lont a week is a perfect amount of time. Kenting is great because there are a lot of very inexpensive places to stay and a lot of really nice places to stay at well. You don't need to book hotels in advance if you go during the week but it does get busier on weekends.

Where is the Kenting Express Bus last stop at Xiowan? Is it at the Caesar Park Hotel only or will driver stop along Kenting Main Road eg at Police Station or Elementary School? Also can we board the Kenting Express bus to Xiowan at either Zuoying HSR station or the Kaoshiung Airport - same price ? Cost of return ticket is cash ntd600 ? How much if using Easycard?

The express head off at the hotel, and these two stops is correct! It seems the round tickets is NTD 600!

HI, thinking of bringing my family to the Forest Recreational Area in Kenting. However, I understand that cars are not allowed in the park. Even though the paths are said to be stroller/wheelchair friendly, could I check if it it a long walk from the carpark area to the Sea View Tower (观海楼）？Checked google map and the distance given was about 1.5-1.6 km.
I am quite worried that the seniors in my group would not be able to take the walk, since it is going to be back and forth...

You want to visit the park at 8 am due to the heat. The walk is mostly pave road, but the heat is not bearable. There is a parking lot near the entrance, but car is not allow inside the park. At the viewing tower, and visitor center, there are water filter, make sure you drink plenty of water before you set out for the next walk. Seniors can walk, they just need to take frequent break. There are many areas that has stairs, they can just wait at the viewing tower or nearby bench. Overall walkway is very easy even for seniors.

Hello. My name is Lance. I am travelling to Kenting for a day. From Kenting National Park website (ktnp) I understand cycling is a good way to see Kenting. Does anyone know of 2 or 3 different bike rental places in Kenting near the Xioawan bus transfer station where the 9189 Kenting Express bus arrives? I would like to email 2 or 3 different places to find out prices. Thanks.

We (parents + 2 teens) will visit Kenting, departing from Tainan in AM and stay one night. We will only have half day to see the sights. Should we hire a taxi one way from Tainan or Kaohsiung or take the bus to Kenting and hire a taxi once we arrive in Kenting? We probably won't have time to scooter as I had thought initially; we also won't do water sport as that is available at home.

Kenting area is sprawling and is made up of several beaches and parks, so you would need transportation to move around. The taxis that I saw were few and all were from out of town. So if you are staying in Kenting area for the night, your best bet is to hire a scooter. When we were there in Jan 17, we hired a taxi from our hotel in Kaoshiung, for 8 hours at 4000 NT, for our family of 3 adults, leaving in the early morning and returning late afternoon.

We're a family of four, 2 adults & 2 teens (14+ 16 yo). Can an adult and a teenager fit on one rental scooter? If only one person per scooter, how old do you have to be to ride one? Can one international driver license rent multiple scooters or each adult need their own?

If you rent petrol scooters then two people can fit on one scooter. If you rent electric ones than you will require one scooter per person. Cost is NT$500 per day. You must have an international license to rent the scooters. If you only have one license rent from several different places. Electric scooters do not require a license. Be careful when driving. Taiwan has a lot of crappy drivers, especially in Kenting, where many people are weekend drivers only.

Most young people goes to Kenting for the beach, but if you enjoy nature beauty you should go to Kenting National Park. This place has paved walk way, with many different
type of trees, flowers, birds and ..., it is locate at middle of the hill, not just the portion by the beach. This is not really a hiking place, most people should be able to walk around for around 2 hours, unless one is having difficulty to move around.

Not sure how much time you're planning on having there. Most people stay the night. But there is a national park that Kending is based around. You can rent scooters or take a taxi to the entrance. It's a magnificent view and the coral remnants that high above the sea give some geological perspective. There is also the Euluanbi lighthouse, which has some historical interest and a nature walk attached to the site. I believe there is an entrance fee of NT100. And of course the best night attraction is the night market that sets up along the main thoroughfare. If you're able to stay the night, even better.
