The area
Neighbourhood: West Central District/ North District
The West Central District is the most populous and the busiest area. A lot of shops and hotels crowd the district, and the long-standing history results in a variety of street food. In addition to that, this district also has the highest number of temples. This is how it got the name “Tainan’s Pantheon.” Historic buildings are literally ubiquitous. For example, Hayashi Department Store, National Museum of Taiwan Literature, Confucius Temple, Chihkan Tower (formerly Fort Provintia), Sacrificial Rites Martial Temple, Tainan Grand Mazu (name of a goddess) Temple, etc. Recently, the tourism in Tainan has laid emphasis on alleys and lanes. Examples include Fujhong Street specialising in creative handicrafts, as-you-stroll desserts on Jhengsing Street, Shennong Street lined with hundred-year-old ancient houses, Sinyi Street on which the old city gate stands, Sinmei Street where old and new cultures fuse together, and Guohua Street and Baoan Raod famous for all the savoury food. All the traditional and delicious food and flavours are about to burst in your mouth. The North District, on the other hand, is a quiet secret hideaway. Lane 321 on Gongyuan Road used to be a Japanese soldiers’ dormitory. Now a few artists have set up their studios here. There are diversified art styles in each old Japanese-style house. The Garden Night Market on Haian Road is one of the famous night markets in both Tainan and Taiwan, and was the top 12 Facebook check-in location worldwide in 2013.

We were there around 5.30pm. It was not too crowded and we could walk at ease. There were food and drink stalls, games stalls, accessories (earrings, phones), apparel etc. The crowd started to stream in when we left around 7pm. Do visit this night market early to avoid the crowd.

Not sure about others... but this night market should be rated the best in Taiwan, simply because it got everything, fun and very localized... unlike some "tourist night market area" ..

Not too far from the City a taxi ride is just below NT200 from my hotel... very fair...

We had our dinner + supper here, bought some souvenir and even play few games with my kids... you will be amazed at the kind of games available here.. is not your typical night market ...

Coming from a country where night market small or huge , I still find that this night market has it own charmed and deserved to a recommendation from me .. so if you really like to explore... drop by this market, but please check the day as they don't operate everyday .

plan yourself ahead, spent at least 2-3 hours minimum at this night market

you will immerse yourself in fun and enjoyable night trying so hard to just check out all those food & games stall !

Garden Night Market is the biggest night market in Tainan.Taiwan is identical with night market. So night market is the time to hunt for street food where many of local food stalls line in night market street. Besides that many souvenir, fashion and games can be found in night market as well.

Bubble tea, Stinky Tofu, Tie Dan or soy sauce cooked eggs are halal foods culinary that you can try.The famous culinary in the night market is grilled oyster cigu and oyster omelette.

Oysters originating from Cigu Lagoon Tainan, which is Taiwan's largest lagoon that has high salt concentrations so that oysters easily breed. Therefore, oysters abound in this city at affordable prices.

This was the last night market we visited in Taiwan and we thought we had saved the best for last. But being the biggest night market in Taiwan doesn't make it the best. It was so busy that you could barely move and eventually we decided to only make our way around the periphery of the market as the middle sections with all the food were not even moving.

This market is set up in a grid design which can lead to grid lock and in our experience it did which made it impossible to enjoy. If you want to experience the busiest night market in Taiwan make sure you go very early if you actually want to try any of the food

I went here tonight and it's just another night market as I'm getting used to them now. Pretty decent food to munch on. Afew games and other stuff for sale. I preferred the Wusheng Night Market though.

One of the best night markets in Taiwan, food is cheaper than the big cities like taipei or kaohsiung. With more than 59 food stalls, clothing stores game stalls you can easily spend 2-3 hours here! Beware of the opening hours as they only do thursdays saturdays and Sundays you can catching the number 0L (Zero left route) bus from the Tainan train station to here. Easy!

If you want to sample of street food and shop for cheap clothes and electronics, then this is the place for you. However, if you dislike crowds, heat, and cheap goods, then avoid this night market. As a tourist, I didn't find any souvenir type items for sale. Near the multi-colored pole sign about this night market, you'll find a taxi stand.

Night market was one of the bigger ones in Tainan thus, rather crowded compared with some others however, most stores closes early or are not opened during rainy days.

Being in Tainan for a few days, we realised that the night markets offered similar items with similar vendors as each night market operates on different nights. However, garden night market was nearer to shopping complexes compared to the other night markets.

Garden night market is very big and crowded with people and stalls. Only selected stalls provide seats for dining.

We went to quite a few night markets in Tainan and Kaohsiung this time and found Garden night market to be the best for shopping. It had many more stalls for non food compared to the rest. It was nice to browse and buy after eating. I bought soft toys, t shirts and a leather belt. Great value for money. Food wise was also good. Lots of game stalls too. Would definitely go again if in the area.
