Top ways to experience Laomei Green Reef and nearby attractions
The area
Neighbourhood: Sanzhi / Shimen District
Neighboring mountains and sea shores, the natural environment is beautiful with natural Baisha (White Sand) Bay formed by Cape Fugui and Cape Linshanbi. The coast is clear and shallow as a mirror with dunes dotting the beach. The uncanny natural sceneries are a result of early volcanic eruptions. The running lavas cooled to form the unique trench landscape of the famous Laomei Green Reef in April and May, within Shimen. The rock trenches are covered in green algae, forming breathtaking emerald green wonders and landscapes. Sanzhi, with its crescent-shaped beach coastal scenery, crystal blue ocean and clean white clouds creates a south island atmosphere unique to summer. Taste the delicious meals on banks in nearby feature cafes and enjoy the soft blow of light winds. Every year during autumn harvest, the “Water Bamboo Festival” is held for the Sanzhi feature farm produce. There will be DIY experiences, and kitchen events acting as a farmer for the day, not only getting to know the Sanzhi water bamboo but also tasting creative dishes!

Laomei Green Reef (老梅綠石槽) is located only 650 m (2,133 ft) from the Northernmost tip of Taiwan. It is only 40 km (24.9 mi) from Taipei Station and takes about one hour by car. The green reef is an extraordinary location that presents the beauty and wonder of nature through million years’ evolution. It is located in Laomei - a small town of Shimen District. It is part of the North Coast & Guanyinshan National Scenic Area (北海岸及觀音山國家風景區).
After the two eruptions of the Datun Mountain 2.5 million years and 700,000 years ago, volcanic rocks formed along the north coast of Taiwan. Softer parts were washed away by waves throughout the years and these wave-cut gullies formed along the seashore. Erosion has left neat trenches in the reef, resulting in the wonderful scene we see today. Every year from late March to May this approximately 700 m (2,297 ft) long reef is covered by green algae hence the name. We went to the site at least 3 times and witnessed the mighty sea wave strong enough to make it an incredibly scene to capture the spindrift with the green reefs. Unfortunately, the green reef is no longer as beautiful as it used be due to its popularity and its uniqueness to take photos of the green reef. People step on the reef trying to take photos or just walk on the reef which damages the algae on top of the reefs. Today we can only see half of green reef near the water and the rest shows only brown rock. It is not only destroying the beautiful natural green color cover on the reef, but it is also dangerous to walk on these slippery algae-covered rocks. Global warming also threatens the site because the algae are very sensitive to the high temperature.
Make sure that you come in the right months and know the correct low-tide hours of the day in order to observe this marvelous scenery. It is one of the many natural types of scenery along the north coast of Taiwan. The nearby new parking lots really help the traffic in this small town and make it a pleasant visit to this natural wonder. Nearby you also visit the northernmost Fugui Cape Lighthouse (富貴角燈塔) which is located on the nearby hill and the Fuji Harbor (富基漁港) for lunch or dinner.

Never regret to take long times to get to Shimen where the laomei located.
MRT stopped at tansui station, walking to the bus station and waited the bus no 862 or 863, took about 1 hour ride and got off at Freshwater Mingdeyi Village station, can ask the bus driver if you didn’t know how to walk down laomei, about 10 mins walked to the beach then you will see the laomei green reef. The season to laomei is April to May every year. Don’t miss it if ever visit Taipei in these months. Worth to go, so nature and sit on the reef let the wind blowing... so relaxing and enjoying.

The green rocks are a pretty interesting attraction. But there are a few things to take into account before going. Traveling by public transportation from Taipei, you are looking at about 2-3 hours depending on traffic. But the route is simple. Take the MRT to Tamsui the bus to Lao Mei. I took 862 but there are another 5 or so that will get you there.
There are other sights and attractions along the route so you can make it a day trip and stop off other areas.
The green rocks are beautiful and we'll known so there will be lots of other tourists. Other than looking and taking photos, there really isn't a lot to do at the stop. However, there is a very famous scenic area about 3-4 stops from there.
As a short term expat I enjoyed the experience of seeing a Taiwan treasure. But I am not likely to go back.

I have to assume that I love the sea... Seeing the waves hitting the green reefs of Laomei was delightful!
It is true that Laomei doesn't have a good infrastructure to attend the tourists (a restroom and a small shelter), but it is one of the places you should visit when in the North Coast of Taiwan!
Laomei is reachable by metro/bus (go to Tamsui MRT Station and take bus 862, 863 or 865 - ask the driver to tell you when you get there).

Visited in May. Got to see the green reef on rocks, waves hit on them, took a photo or two, nice photo spot. Nothing on the beach, nothing nearby. Can see a dome on a hill, but don't know what it's for.

Amazing green reef standing at the edge of the crystal clean sea. I can't help taking off my socks and shoes and walk into the cooling water. You will definitely do the same. Trust me.

I reached this place while riding around Taiwan on my bicycle. What a haven of peace! This beach is so special... I have never seen anything like that. This is definitely one of my favorite places in Taiwan.

Went to Lao Mei in mid May We arrived just at low tide according to an online tide chart. You only need a max of 30 minutes there.

You can board bus 862 from tamsui mrt and drop off right outside the entrance to the beach. Beach was rather pathetic as there were lots of debris but the green rocks made up for it. Take a short walk to the lighthouse and waited for sunset to enjoy a marvelous view of the area.Place is not crowded and you can have a great photo session.be sure to catch the last bus at 5pm or you will need to walk about 15mins back to the main road for public transport back to shimen or tamsui.
