Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Near Taipei 101. Part of a previous military village (for the personnel and families of the 44th Arsenal of the Combined Logistics Command).

Now transformed to be a historical site and a community park, preserved the old buildings for glimpse into the past. During the period (around 1949-1980s), the residents lived a very modest life with just enough amenities. There is a small museum showing the history and culture of the village.

It is a popular attraction for local people, but not a must visit for foreign visitors.
If you have time, it still worth a drop by when you visit Taipei 101.

The place is converted to a display museum to remind the history of 44 arsenal or military village. Other side is for young people to showcase their talent.
Just can't believed there is a place of old architecture within the modern district.

We had some time to kill before heading out to the airport and decided to walk around and sample the area. In some ways it is reminiscent of Hutongs that we saw in Beijing, but at the same time quite different. on the day that we went, there were lots of little stalls selling knickknacks, but frankly a bit of a waste of time and we didn’t see anything worth bye. It’s all a bit quaint, worth seeing if you have a bit of time on your hands like we did, but not otherwise.

In 1949, Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek led his loyal troops from mainland China to Taiwan, from whence they were to retake the mainland at some unspecified time in the future. The soldiers and their families had to be housed, but because they were only in Taiwan "temporarily" the housing was very low grade. As it happened, Chiang never returned to the mainland and eventually the soldiers and their families were rehoused in better accommodation. Four Four South is one of the few military villages remaining. It's not pretty, but it was never intended to be. In its rush to develop into a modern society, Taiwan did away with much of its history. Quaint, even shabby, Four Four South Village may be, it is a reminder of how primitive Taiwan once was.

On the last day of our four day trip to Taipei, we paid a visit to this site just a block away from the high rise Taipei 101. It is the site of a former military village for the military staff who worked at the military factory of Four Four Arsenal of the Combined Logistics Command (according to the description at the entrance to the village). It was interesting to see the preserved rows of modest housing as well as the sharp contrast of this site and the modern Taipei 101. There is a museum in the middle where you can enter for free that displays the history as well as ornaments of the settlement. There was no Japanese and extremely limited English explanation unfortunately. Still I thought it a worthwhile place to go, as it is so close to Taipei 101 which is surely included in any package tour.

There were once military villages like this one all over Taiwan, but few remain. The military personnel lived very spartan lives. Four Four South Village was due for demolition but it was saved due to a community campaign, led in part by a long-term foreign resident, Curtis Smith. Now you can walk around and see the village. There's a flea market on the weekend, and also a café. Four Four South Village is rather plain; it is built in grey concrete, but it is well worth a look. It is now a poplar community facility. By the way, the village is just over the road from the Taipei World Trade Centre, near Taipei 101, the tallest building on the island. There's a conveniently placed MRT station nearby.

We love it here - this used to be a REAL VILLAGE within the city -- and it had been transformed into Artistic place that encompassed restaurants, cafes, gift shops, and Flea Market -- It is worth a leisure weekend afternoon here!
Great place for photo shooting and a stroll! The handmade ice cream and authentic local farmer products here are also worth a try!
It is conveniently locating in the CBD area of Taipei!

The small buildings were nice to wonder around, however we missed the importance or significance of them. Some were used for arts and crafts but we didn’t see much else.

Four Four South Village is a reminder of a time when life was less complicated, and also more harsh. It's the sort of village mainland Chinese families n the military grew up in. It's just over the road from the World Trade Centre. Much of the credit for saving this relic of Nationalist rule from the wreckers must go to Canadian expatriate activist, Curtis Smith.

Most of the buildings behind scaffolding - sure it will be great when finished - suggest you check before walking here - still a nice restful place
