Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is a relatively easy trail, takes about 3-4 hours round trip and starts near the National Park office. You can walk to it from the town at the entrance to the Taroko gorge. The trail is partly carved into the side of a cliff with awesome views of the crystal clear blue water in the Liwu river below. No permit is required for this trail.

This trail is, by far, the best trail I’ve been. Very few people, quite with creek water sounds and every now then, the bird sound. Perfect weather, environment and atmosphere, what else you can ask for a better trail to walk and explore all the nature surrounding. Turn around at the five house spot. Very easy and joyable walking. Meditate yourself, fully release your mind to mingle with the sky above, the creek water by your side and the earth underneath you. What a walk, recharge your body and refresh your spirit, all at once!

A very nice start to the day of exploring Taroko national park. The trail itself only takes around 2 hours round trip, despite the map on the buses claiming this takes 4-6 hours.
It is very picturesque, the water is so blue and you really get a feel for the beauty of Taroko. Would absolutely recommend fitting this into your day itinerary.

This is a wonderful trail for people with all abilities I'm sure. The views are simply stunning and the walk isn't too strenuous. We actually also saw wild monkeys in the trees on the left hand side after you pass the rope bridge, including a baby! This day was my favourite in Taiwan and I highly recommend anyone to do it.

Ok, if adventure means rapelling and sky diving, then its not this one. But by adventure I mean you will have to watch your steps to ensure your head doesnt collide with natural rocks that are too close, walk on a narrow trail and all the while keep your distance from the ledge which is broken in few places. Its a safe exciting tour which sees you walk alongside pretty waterfalls and pristine blue waters.. clear waters.

When you are walking down towards the site, you tend to turn your neck to the left as the view are on your left hand side. When returning, you will turn your neck to the right side because you are using the same road to got back to your bus / vehicle. So you will tend to have a tire or stiff neck after visiting this site. Ha ha.......

I find it’s really hard to gauge the difficulty and time required for a walk from reviews, because everyone’s ability is so different. For our group, we were dealing with a baby and a person with limited mobility due to injury (limited the speed they could walk). Despite these limitations, it was a fairly easy walk, in large part because it was quite flat. We did the trail the whole way and back in about three hours. That’s the 4.1km trail and back, so 8.2km total. That being said, there wasn’t anything too interesting or different for the last 1.5km. I would recommend going a bit further than the first hut at 1.5km because there is still more to see. But if you’re getting tired, maybe call it at the 2.4 mark. Photo below. There are some lovely water views around here and it doesn’t really get better than this. But if you’re looking to prolong an enjoyable outdoor activity, the rest of the trail is pretty easy and nice too. We did try the sausage at the first hut. Not sure we would agree with the rave reviews, but it was worth a try. As with other reviewers, recommend stopping by a 7-11 on the way for snacks. You can also get ponchos at 7-11s in the area.

The trail was used to be the hunting route for Taiwanese high mountain aboriginals. Now it is widened for a truck to pass through. The trail itself is one way. If you depart for one hour, you will also need one hour to return. People who join the tours are suggested making a stop at "five houses" and returning from there. The total walking time is 1 hour at least. There are several shops at five houses. A little bit further to "five houses" is a large water pipe, which is used for generating power by water. The trail is now open up through "three houses", and it will take 4 hours at least to travel for round trip in total. The place names three houses or five houses simply refer to small villages for only three or five houses.

We decided to visit the Taroko Gorge independently, relying on the reliable park shuttle bus to get around. And the first meaningful stop on the bus route was at the start of the Shakadang Trail. The trail entrance was marked by a gate that is part of a bridge decorated by lion heads. Walking down a short flight of steps led to the trail path, most of which had been cut under the stone cliff. The trail followed the river valley that had been carved by the path of the rock-strewn Shakadang River. Al some sections of the river, the water was a brilliant (and unexpected) turquoise colour. While the entire trail was about 4-kilometres long, we decided to turn back at the 1.5-kilometre mark in order to be in time to catch the bus. Nevertheless, we felt that we had managed to both receive a good dose of fresh air and seen enough of the natural beauty of the trail. Overall, a nice introduction to the Taroko Gorge region.

What is the best way to get around in this area? We are not taking a tour, are there taxis or Ubers?

Thanks
Connie

I would not advise it. It would be quite troublesome for her and for anyone who would have to help her. Sorry.

Thank you

Hi, it will take you only 1 hour if you go to the pipe then come back. The scene is all the same so I think it's enough to explore.

Is it safe to hike Shakadang Trail as early as 7am in the morning (March)?
Written 28 February 2018
I would suggest you go there around 8:00am to 8:30am as there are more travellers and also the place is not lighted. It can be dangerous as there is lossen rocks falling from the cliff on top.
