We went here before the Lunar New Year for one hour. Very crowded with abundant food shops including ready- to-eat main dishes, side dishes, candies, dry foods, snacks, buns, savory meat ,fish snacks, hams, Taiwanese sausages, fresh produce and seafood... and more . It’s all cash transactions here and we bargained a little bit on what we bought. Come visit during holidays to experience the festival ambiance.

This market dates back to 100 years ago, which was originally located by the South Gate (demolished) of Taipei City. Now it has been renovated as a modern market, located some 5 minutes' walk from the CKS Memorial Hall.
Or you can reach the market from Exit No. 2 of the Taipei MRT CKS Memorial Hall Station.
On the 1st floor, there are traditional preserved hams, cured meats, snacks, cookies, steamed stuffed-buns, and various cooked foods.
On the 2nd floor, there is a mid-size food court, offering numerous affordable Taiwanese food. Unfortunately, only one vendor provides English menu.

Nanmen Market is located above exit 2 of Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall mrt station. I was there with my wife on 04 March 2015 at 1030 hrs. This was my second visit.
There are many stalls on ground floor selling different types pastries, cookies, bak kua, pineapple tarts, many jars of different salted/preserved prunes, fruits etc... which will delight most ladies. Also available are dried fruits, nuts, cured ham, sausages, mushrooms, abalones and fish roes. There are also a variety of buns made on the spot. There are some stalls selling cooked food for takeaway as lunch too. This is a good place to buy gifts and stuff for family and friends back home as prices are cheaper.
On the 2nd floor are boutiques and dressmaking shops with unique and elegant dresses on display. These shops open after 1100 hrs only. At a corner on 2nd floor is a food court with many stalls selling different type of noodles and mixed veg/meat rice. I had my lunch here ordering a plate of rice with stewed pork, veg, tofu and a bowl of soup which cost me only NT$40. In Singapore, it would have cost NT$70.
After lunch, we went down to the basement wet market for a look. There are many fruits, vegetables and meat stalls here. The fruits look really fresh and big. There was no smell/stink in the wet market and floor was only slightly wet near seafood section. Nanmen Market is frequent by locals staying nearby and workers in nearby government building etc... I did not see any tour group here.
After your shopping, you can go back down into mrt station, walk in cool comfort and come out exit 5 for Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall visit. This is better than crossing a major road to left of Nanmen Market, walk 80m and cross another major road to right when you see the Memorial Hall. Admission to Memorial Hall is free.

As this is our first time in Taiwan, the best place to visit first is a wet market. This way we can mingle with the locals and understand their culture. Nanmen is located at Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Station which is very convenient for visitors to go.
It was interesting seeing the wide variety of cooked food prepared in different ways. We did not try as it was our first day in Taipei and we went to the market straight from the airport. As the food were displayed openly and we were not sure whether we need to reheat before consuming. But there was one particular food stall which was extremely crowded and the food was piping hot.
There were a quite a number dried food stalls selling interesting cured ham, sausages and fish roes. There were also a variety of steamed buns which we have not seem before.
The wet market which is at the basement was also interesting. There are live poultry on display. We were fascinated that the butcher was selling just the toes of the pig and some stalls were preparing fresh sausages.
Should we be back Taipei, we would visit this market again to try out the cooked food and the cured fish roe. We bought some custard apples which were very sweet and creamy.

This market was a market that my Grandmother went to, alot of personal memories. Its moving to another location October 17th, not recommending anything there worth a visit

We didn't buy anything from the market but the foodcourt on the second floor is a must visit. The braised beef noodles 紅燒牛肉麵 from 合歡刀削麵 stall is superb. There is a perpetual queue at the stall. Lots of people ordered the tomato soup version as well.

A great place to buy snacks such as candy, dried fruits, barbequed pork slices, almond crispy jerky, Jinhua ham, dried mushrooms, Chinese sausages and dried seafood like scallops. Located just outside exit 2 of the Chang Kai Shek Station on the Taipei Metro Red Line.

Hi, I saw several markets the last few days and was not aware that one of the best ones are next to my hotel. The simple entrance does not prepare you for the secrets inside! The locals buy here and I felt safe to try several offered items. The clothing stores upstairs are not worth seeing.

Introduced by a friend to check out this market and got there by taking the Metro to Chiang Kai-Shek Station and got out taking exit 2. Many of the Taiwanese products are available at this market. Fruits, dried foodstuff, many varieties of Chinese sausages, canned goods are among the many offerings. This market is relatively clean and catered for the locals and prices are reasonable. Shopkeepers are polite and good samples are freely given out. Above the market there's a food court that offers Taiwanese cuisine.... shop and eat in the same place and that's good enough.
