You may think that Taiwan was never ruled by any emperor, there was no palace in Taiwan. But this historical building is so magnificent and splendid baroque style, just like a royal palace of Taiwan.
In 1899, Japanese Governor-General of Taiwan Kodama Gentarō (兒玉源太郎) odered to build this house as governor's residence. He intended to build this house as luxury and splendid as possible, to show Japanese Emperor's power over Taiwan. The building cost is so high even congress of Japan complained for this project.
The first generation of the governor's residence was completed in 1901, designed by Japanese architects Dōgo Fukuda and Ichiro Nomura (宮尾麟、野村⼀郎). Due to humid and termite, this building was damaged seriously after 10 years of its construction. 1913 Governor-General rebuilt it by Matsunosuke Moriyama(森山松之助). Moriyama was the chief engineer of Governor-General Office of Taiwan. He also designed Governor-General Office Building (President Office Building of Republic of China today).
This building was not only a residence for governor, but also a guest house for all the royals came from Japan. Japan Emperor Showa (Crown Prince Hirohito) also stayed here when visiting Taiwan 1923.
After Taiwan was handed over from Japan to the Republic of China (ROC), this building was used as residence of chairman of Taiwan province. Then in 1950 this building was turned into presidential and foreign affairs use. ROC Minister of Foreign Affairs George Yeh and Japanese Minister of Foreign Affairs Isao Kawada signed the Treaty of Taipei here in 1953.
Including US President Clinton and Singapore President Lee Kuan Yew have been here.
One day of a month this building will be open to public without any reservation. Next open days will be: 7th November, 5th December in 2015.

The Taipei Guest House (Taipei Bing Guan) Taiwan National Heritage, now state guest house that host world leaders, It is opened for public on every first Saturday of each month & national public holidays. There are friendly volunteers always welcome guest and guide us through the mansion, just register yourself at the main entrance at hallway. Also enjoy the 15min video show demonstrate the designs and restoration work carried out on this mansion.

Don't waste your effort to come here unless you've checked the website. It is only open to the public on the first Saturday or Sunday of every month.

You always get what you pay for with attractions and since this one costs nothing, that's exactly what you get. Rather incongruosly designed and built in a European style, there's actually very little to see inside this imposing mansion. There's sparse decor in some of the hallways and most rooms are prop'd with furniture that's neither interesting or stylish, the surprising lack of decor and detail is probably the most surprising part of the space. Pass by the outside for some photos, but don't waste time inside.

When the term "guest house" is used, many Western visitors assume it's a slightly down-at-heal residential hotel at the sea-side. Nothing could be further than the truth. The Taipei Guest House dates from the Japanese colonial era; it's a magnificent structure; it's used to house visiting VIPs and host civic receptions. I have been invited to attend several receptions at the Taipei Guest House, most recently to be introduced to Tsai Ing-wen, president of the Republic of China. It's certainly a prime example of Taiwanese craftsmanship of which the people of the island are rightly proud .

This handsome building is a relic of the Japanese colonial era (1895-1945). It is situated on the governmental area, near Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA). MOFA often use it to host official functions. I have been a guest there, it is a most attractive building If you get a chance to inspect the Taipei Guest House, do so.

Taipei Guest House is opened to public on the first of January (without admission), so I went there this year for sketching. The building structure and design are beautiful (Baroque style), and there's a nice garden in front of the building where we could sit and sketch. It's a good place for professional and armature painters.
This place is very close to the Presidential Palace. It's about 5 minutes walk from the nearest MRT station (Taiwan University Hospital Station, Exit #1).
Once a month, Taipei Guest House is opened to public for one day, during weekend. But you need to make reservation online in advance.

This is a Baroque style building which was built by Japanese.Here served as the residence of the governor-general during the Japanese occupation period. If visitors want some Western style building in Taipei, this is a place where you can't miss. Unfortunately, this guest house just opens one day per month.Check the opening day before your visit.

an historical place where the government entertain the guests from other government officials from other countries. This place totally not an asian style but more of european style. for sure worth a while to visit when you are out there.
