All tourists know about the famous ‘Blue Trail’ that links the five Cinque Terre towns, but there are many more lesser known walking trails that criss-cross the Cinque Terre National Park.
Trail 586 is an extremely scenic trail which starts from the hilltop village of Volastra, high above Manarola. It is one of a series of trails that join up to link Manarola and Corniglia.
Like most of the walking trails here, it is free (currently only two trails require a hiking pass).
The trailhead starts at the front of the ancient sanctuary of Nostra Signore Della Salute (Our Lady of Good Health). It is well signposted with the trail number and the familiar red and white stripes that mark the walking trails.
From here, we followed #586 until it joined #587 which took us right down into Corniglia.
It was a stunning walk through terraced vineyards, before heading downhill through shady forest areas.
We walked along narrow paths with precipitous drops and absolutely panoramic views of the Ligurian coastline.
A highlight was discovering a simple cantina, Cantina Capellini, operating out the back of a vineyard, just past Volastra. We sat on upturned crates with a glass of local wine, surrounded by grapevines. Magical!
The trail is essentially downhill which makes it sound a whole lot easier than it is. The section through the vineyards is mostly level but then the slope becomes sharper and the path becomes uneven, with loose rocks and lots of stone stairs. Our walking pace became a lot slower as we kept our eyes on our feet and the path ahead.
GETTING TO VOLASTRA:You can either walk to Volastra from Manarola or get the small Manarola shuttle bus (free with the Cinque Terre Card or €2.50). The bus goes past Groppo, finishing at Volastra. The trip takes about 10 minutes.

On the spur of the moment we decided to take this trail from Manarola to Volastra. We found the experience very rewarding and incredibly interesting. But there were a few points that we think are worth considering if you plan to do a similar walk: (1) Set off as early as possible (especially in the Summer) to avoid the more intense heat and crowds; (2) Wear good quality walking shoes as the path can be quite narrow (thongs and sandals are not a good idea); (3) In the Summer, bring plenty of water as there are no drinking taps along the way; (4) Bring a camera but a heavy backpack is a no-no.
This is truly quite a challenging hike (from Manarola --> Volastra, the reverse direction is easier) but well worth it for the views and experience.

Loved this walk. We started from Corniglia (go to the back of the church) and walked up, up and up some more until you walk through the vineyards and wind back down to Manarola.
It takes just over 2hrs to do the walk and while it’s hard on the knees with lots of steps either side, it’s not too challenging.
The views are worth it - it’s lovely up there walking through the terraces of grapes.

I always had a tough time answering the question - Do you prefer hiking on the mountains or being near the ocean, but I found my answer in Cinque Terre? For me, nothing beats the experience of "hiking while taking in the vastness of the deep blue ocean' where all you can see surrounding you is the majestic Atlantic.
We were a Group of 5 - 2 adults, 2 Seniors and 1 child aged 6. We were on a week's trip to Tuscany and Cinque terre was on our agenda for 2 of those days. We were looking for a hike in the Cinque terre as I was amazed by the scenic views of the ocean... At the same time, it had to be relatively walkable and not too steep, as we had a 6 yr old and my parents along. So we decided to drive to a high village, and start the hike there. That would give us an advantage of the altitude for the best views, while at the same time managing a flat Terrain for the hike.
We parked at Volastra 335m and headed out of the village passing the church towards Case Pianca. In just a couple of minutes the views open up to the sea. The paths are narrow and in some spots one has to give way to oncoming hikers to pass by. The path winds around vineyards and olive trees (Volastra is the village of Olives) and you leave Manarola below and walk taking in the views of Corniglia on the hill below... In the distance are the towns of Vernazza and the beach village of Monterosso al Mare. You can choose to complete the hike to Case Pianca or Corniglia. In our case we paused chose a cosy spot in a clearing in the vineyards and sipped some tea, while trying to take in as much of the ocean before us. It will be one the best "Teas" we've had in our lifetime! I can't wait to come back to Cinque Terre.

We hiked this as part of Trek Guy'd. Absolutely sunning. How do they have so many vineyards on the side of a cliff?! This hike shows how hard working the people in this area are. The views of the sea, the vineyards, the local farms are certainly worth the effort.

It's narrow, steep and not for the faint-hearted, but the views across the vineyards to the sea are worth the pain. Make sure you have proper shoes and in summer take plenty of water.

Worth a visit if you are nearby! You can either walk up from Manalora or (just like we did) take a bus. The fare is included in one-day pass if you have one.
Volastra is really charming village, surrounded by vineyards. You can follow the red-marked trail (just behind the church) and soon you will see both Manarola and Corniglia. At one point take the lower path (behind a sign, marked as viewpoint in maps.me) - you will get better panoramatic view.

•i sentieri sono frequentati? È sicuro percorrerli da soli?
•il pagamento della tariffa per accedervi si fa ogni volta che si percorre un tratto nuovo? Più che altro perché vorrei capire se mi conviene acquistare la Card giornaliera.
•consigliate l'utilizzo dei bastoni e scarpe da trekking?
•per il sentiero Manarola-Volastra-Corniglia, non essendo molto esperta, consigliate di raggiungere Volastra col bus?
