The only Whale watching tour I would go on. This trip was incredible start to finish. Big boat, amazing breakfast and great staff. The other thing to note, is that we were out with these guys for over 4 hours and everything they do an operate is done ethically and without stressing the dolphins or whales..

I was actually disgusted to see, when we found the first whale , at least 3 boats actually speeding and chasing after the whale. The whale kept driving which means it's distressed and scared as usually the come to surface. I honestly wouldn't recommend any tour that thinks it is ok to do this and the minute you saw a whale, they left. Whereas this tour company went out and using local fisherman found another whale and we got many close ups on our own because the whale came close to the boat and was not distressed. Thank you again!!

I'm a wildlife photographer and author and have taken whale-watching trips all over the world. I did two trips with Raja and the Whales and was very impressed with the operation. The trip was well organised, the crew were extremely knowledgeable and most importantly they were very respectful of the marine life, taking care not to approach to close or 'pursue' the animals and risk causing them stress.
We didn't see any whales on either of my trips but we had great views of a huge school of spinner dolphins as well as several Risso's and other wildlife. I would definitely recommend a trip with Raja and the Whales if you're in Sri Lanka.

After a very early start, we got to Raja & the Whales for just after 6am. We were signed in, paid our money and given sea sickness pills. We all then walked down to the docks and were helped onboard the boat. Before we'd barely left the harbour they were severing tea and coffee with ginger biscuits, with a create of water left on deck for people to help themselves. Shortly after they came around giving everyone a fruit platter. Later on we also had the choice of omelet or 2 fried eggs which chicken sausages and bread.

Our guides explained the potential of sighting and the correct method for approaching the whales. It was a bit disturbing to see how many boats surrounded the whales and yet at the same time we were hanging further back for whale safety reasons but missing the viewings. However the reason behind this became clearer later. Once all the boats had grabbed their sighting, they went back home. Raja stayed out for much longer and we had so many fabulous lone viewing without the whales who weren't now being crowded by lots of boats.

Raja's staff also explained the history of sightings, how tourism had affected the migration paths and the reduced number of blue whale sightings as a result.

The boat had no seats on the top deck, just padded water proof cushions to sit on. This actually was a much better option when whale spotting as everyone could freely move around the deck to each side of the boat without fixed chairs getting in the way.

Toward the end of the day we were served coconut drinks and cake and then given an opportunity to jump into the sea. The staff had to pull you back on board as there is no ladder into the water. My son had a fabulous time doing this. We hadn't expected it so had not brought swimwear, but were dry by the time we reached the harbour anyhow.

Their professional photographer sent over all their pictures the next day free of charge. A definite bonus as our camera died half way through the trip!

We would highly recommend Raja and the Whales.

I felt this was a very well run trip and the staff were mindful of the sea animals’ welfare. This was a priority for me and they were extremely careful. Knowledgeable and ethical. The trip included tea, coffee and breakfast and even a coconut which was thoughtful. Photos of the animals we saw were also sent free of charge which was a nice touch.

It was an unforgettable experience, the crew was great.
When we got on the boat we were greeted warmly. First we had tea and fruit, then breakfast as the boat set sail and headed out to sea. The crew were friendly and careful. We were lucky enough to see Bryde's whales, dolphins and flying fish. There was always information in English about the sightings. Later, we were able to jump into the sea from the boat and go for a swim. The crew helped us get into the boat from the water. Photos were also taken at the sightings, which we received by email in the evening, so we could just relax and look around and still have wonderful photomemories. All in all, a perfect tour that I can only recommend.

The most fantastic and memorable experience of our whole trip! The team of Raja&the Whales is kind and very considerate. They respect the privacy of the animals and yet remain the best to find them! We were very lucky - saw three whales in a couple of hours, far away from the other boast. The animals wre at ease and made a great show for us. Numerous dolphins of 3 different kinds too! The guys from the company were explaining all the time, were extremely kind to sea sick (me and my daughter included) 😀. Several helpings during the trips - fruit, breakfast, sweets, king coconut and water were provided throughout the trip! Most importantly- enjoy the views, the staff was taking professional photos that they shared with everyone at the end of the trip! A huge THANK YOU for your kindness and professionalism!

Our raja and the whale experience was excellent. It was very well run overall and the food/ snacks they provided were great. They really respected the whales we saw and kept there distance unlike other boats. Would really recommend.

Even tho the crew said they would keep distance to the animals, it didn’t really seem like it in real life. They came just as close as the other (maybe 15?) boats approaching the mammals. It felt like a hunt and we didn’t even really saw a whale. The whale was Chased by all of these whale watching boats but it was always too far away to really see it. The dolphins on the other were also very close, but just because they were unfortunately Chased by our boat as well. Overall, a very long (almost 6 hours) and disappointing experience in which we didn’t really saw a whale and the animals got „hunted“. Unfortunately can’t recommend.

The whale tour was an amazing experience in Mirissa. We saw multiple times the dolphins and the whales. The crew has taken care about the gests, providing food and drinks. Afterwards we even got the very nice pictures from the guide !
