Tianluokeng Tulou Group, commonly known as "Four Dishes and One Soup" Tulou Keng~
It is composed of a square earth building, three round earth buildings, and an oval earth building~
It is named after the scene of "four dishes and one soup" when viewed from a high place!
The five earth buildings are Buyun Building, Zhenchang Building, Ruiyun Building, Hechang Building and Wenchang Building.
Earth Building Group is located in Nanjing County, Zhangzhou City, Fujian Province. It is a century-old earth building building.
At present, most of the buildings are used for tourism, with B&Bs, restaurants, and shops, and there are not many residents living there~

We stayed for three nights at the Tianluokeng Tulou village. Chinese people refer to the group of buildings as 'four dishes and a soup' as from the viewing platform above the buildings look a bit like four plates of food and a bowl of soup. The buildings are set on a beautiful hillside. They and the surrounding area have been really well preserved so there are no ugly modern buildings nearby. There are great views both during the day and after dark from viewing platforms above and below. The views in the morning when there is fog hanging in the valley are stunning. The great thing about the village is that it hasn't yet become too commercialised. Although there are lots of people there working in the tourist industry as guides or with little stalls many of the residents still actually live and work on the land farming fruit, vegetables and tea. Therefore the atmosphere is much nicer than the other Tulou areas we visited. We went to Yongding after coming here and Yongding in comparison has been completely ruined. There are ugly buildings right next to the Tulou, large busy roads and lots of not particularly friendly local people trying to sell you things at rip off prices. From Tianluokeng you can take a couple of day trips to other villages which are quite nice although not as nice as Tianluokeng itself but still worthwhile visiting to see some of the different examples of Tulou. The only thing to note is that if you choose to stay in Tianluokeng Tulou buildings the accommodation is very basic. Rooms have no bathrooms etc. However, I wouldn't let this put you off staying overnight. It is worth it so you can get up early and view the village first thing in the morning.

It's touristy and busy during the lunch time. But after 3 pm, most tourists leave here.
There are 3 villages to visit in this scenic spot. Tianluokeng Village, Yuchang House(Xiaban Village) and Taxia Village. Tianluokeng is good when viewing from the viewing platform, a bird view. Yuchang House is a "leaning house" and the construction is really special. Taxia Viilage is picturesque.
Please feel free to ask me more questions about Hakka Houses, I have toured many hakka villages.

Zhangzhou Tianluokeng Village
On our way to Raja Ampat, Indonesia, we had a 12 hour layover at Xiamen, China. We scheduled an excursion to the Zhangzhou Tianluokeng Village using the Chinese transit visa option. The person we chose (Selina Chen) made all the difference.
Selina picked us up at the airport with a driver and headed out for the day. For next several hours, we saw the beautiful country side of China. Selina took care of everything from entrance fees to lunch, even arranged for a local guide who explained the historical aspect of the village. All we had to do was enjoy the attraction, take photographs and shop for souvenirs.
We were very impressed and cannot overstate the professionalism that Selina commanded. If you’re looking to find a guide, be it Zhangzhou Tianluokeng Village or the nearby Xiamen Island, we highly recommend Selina.

These buldings are rare, ancient but yet full of life. It's definitely worth the ride from Xiamen (3 hours drive). A true journey in the past...

silly when these historically interesting village houses were mistaken for rocket launchers. this village was big and one could easily spend hours to get a glimpse of it. since we visited yunahuiyao nearby, we just drove past it and went straight to the viewing platform for the classic photo shot. beautiful indeed and would have been equally great to go in.

It’s a 3.5 hour bus ride from Xiamen. Then take the local village tour bus about 12km into this world heritage of historical Hakka house, known as Tulou or earthly building. As the village consists of 4 round buildings with a square building in the middle, it is appropriately call 4 dishes 1 soup. The one and only in the world. First you have the bird eye view from the top. Then you descend through the concrete stairs to enter into the center of one of the round buildings. Amazing architect when you consider how they managed to build it without any machinery hundred of years ago. The main purpose of the design is protection against invasion. When it comes to survival, you can achieve the impossible.

This village has 5 tulous in total but it is a good base for exploring the area where you can find other villages with similar tulous. They look similar but each one has some particular feature. I suggest getting a guide or you will not know what you are looking at.
You can even find a place to stay in these tulous, but the rooms are very very basic, yet clean. If you want to have your own bathroom, then this place is definitely not for you. Experiencing the village means that by sleeping there in one of their rooms means you will be dining together and enjoying what small things they have to offer. Strange but true, in these small villages people have gigantic karaoke systems which they turn on in the evening for everyone to enjoy.
Each tulou houses about 100 people... but many rooms are just locked because many people nowadays work in cities. So you will not find as many people as you might think. The villagers earn a small living by selling tea, which they grow just outside the village (there are many tea plantations surrounding the tulous)
I was in this village for 3-4 days painting the tulous and visiting around other places which featured other types of tulou. I enjoyed the painting as well as the interaction with the local people who are very friendly and NOT pushy at all to sell their products. Unlike in other parts of asia where you feel pressure to buy things, here the atmosphere is diffferent. Just take these places as friendly villages where a nice cup of tea really welcomes guests. I cannot speak chinese, apart from the occational word... and yet, I was able to find a way to enjoy what they were offering. This is another reason why I suggest getting a guide so that you can interact more with the people.
For me, this was truly an unforgettable experience... but remember if you decide to go as a tourist, just for visiting, it is one thing... living there for at least 2-3 days will give you a different view - and of course villagers will want to know more about you and welcome you to dine with them.

I'd give this place a rating of 4 if it wasn't for all the stalls setup in and around the round houses. I haven't got anything against the locals trying to make money, but the stalls do ruin the atmosphere. Now that the bad is out of the way, the good can follow. The upper viewing deck does provide for a very photogenic view of this tulou cluster. It is also very nice of the residents to allow tourists to go inside the tulou and look around at what is technically their home. The residents will also charge a 5RMB fee if you wish to go to the upper levels and look around.

Hi,
After reading all the reviews about Tianluokeng tulou, I intend to make a trip in the month of April 2018. And I intend to stay within the compound itself. And I’ll be going alone.
Questions:
1) I have google and can’t find any reservation for accommodation. So do you just walk in and try your luck asking any of the families whether are they willing to house me?
2) I’ll be coming from Fuzhou by train, drop off at Nanjing train station and the luggage (ard 15 kg) will be with me. I understand there are express bus going there. Will it be difficult to lug my luggage to reach the actual site. Will there be any climbing of stairs or the express bus/private car can just park outside the tulou?
Appreciate your advise.
