I enjoyed visiting this ancient town and especially seeing its older buildings and its older people. The town was founded about 2,000 years ago. It is becoming more commercialized, but likely to service the needs of sightseers.

Huang Longxi Ancient town is probably the most famous tourists' town in Sichuan nowadays. For many Chinese tourists, especially people from Sichuan, they really like to visit this town, because it has many local foods for people to try, chinese traditional antient buildings, green trees everywhere and a creek running though the main town with cool water in summer, the night view is also very good, very peaceful and romantic. As a local guide, i always try to keep my reviews impartial and write them based on my own feelings and experience, for Chinese tourists, they like this town, for many foreign tourists, i have to say, according to the people i guided, half-half. For these foreign tourists who want to try nice foods and see real Chinese ancient buildings, maybe they will feel disappointed by Huang Longxi, because even though there are probably hundreds of restaurents in this town, but only few of them really have tasty and special dishes to serve, because this town is always very very popular and full of people, many restaurants sell foods based on time not quality, so it is not a good place to enjoy amazing foods, but some of the local snacks are quite good though.While talking about the history, well, the reason that some of my foreign clients who felt disappointed about this town was because they saw so many renewed buildings everywhere and very clean vintage streets or alleies, they felt like they were cheated. Well, i have to say, yes, most of the buildings are renewed and together with the whole plan of the town, does that mean that this town is a fake? My answer is NO, actually about 2000 years ago, this town was a very very famous port for ships , as time goes by, many old buildings had been destroyed during wars or floods, but even till today, there are still a few really old houses left there, and they were from late Qing Dynasty. Besides, this town is really popular, for those people who dont like to join crowds, you'd better go there during workdays, but besides that, you can also find a lot of cheap and local tourists' products there for you to buy.

This is as close as the chinese get to letting their hair down. No stag parties or drunken youths, but, you can actually get a beer here and watch tourists drift past, without anyone batting an eyebrow. No kiss me quick hatsthough. It is about 40 minutes from Shuangliu , therefore about an hour and a half from Chengdu (35 kilometres). The buses are every half hour from Shuangliu. GO EARLY! This is my best tip. As the day progresses the crowds thicken, and the buses get more crowded.Its name means Yellow dragon city, and guess what someone saw here over a thousand years ago? 219 AD to be exact.
Encircled by 2 rivers, with one lake, full of streams with kids getting soaked therein, hundreds of shops, hundreds of restaurants, one massage parlour,and several hotels.There are young chinese couples wandering round with garlands of flowers in their hair, oh no not the sixties! Half a dozen quiet little temples, some gorgeous, genuinely old, and genuinely not so old imitation buildings, little alleys, and very clean. It makes no bones about being vtouristy. I stayed the night, the tourists all disappeared and had a great meal out. The hotel cost less than 100 yuan and was clean and comfortable. It meant that next morning I had the place to myself, and left on an empty bus!

The Yellow Dragon Brook old town started 2100 years ago. Its located 36 KM (22.5 miles) from the center of Chengdu and southeast of the Shuangliu (CTU) airport. The old town has been renovated and there is a small meandering brook that is a natural divider of the long main street with a sprinkling of bridges and wooden logs across it. Shops line both sides. One hundred eighty movies were shot here. The old town area is a little more than 50 square kilometers so one can explore away from the main street. I recommend taking the paths along the Jin Jiang river with its many arched bridges. We could spend many hours here but because we were with a tour group didn't have time to eat in the many restaurants there. There is a Panda post office in town where one can deposit a mail into different boxes marked 1 year to 20 or 25 years for the mail to be mailed. People often mail to themselves.
A word about Chengdu - UA has direct 787 flights between SFO and CTU. The CTU airport may not have the best signage as it has a separate domestic and international security gates. The international one is all the way to your right as you face the ticking counters and going through the Customs can take half an hour or more. Although the Chengdu cuisine can be fiery and numbing, we actually ate at a pizza buffet place that give senior discounts, and serves banana as well strawberry chocolate pizza in addition to regular buffet food. The pizza buffet place is on the 4th or 5th level of a small shopping mall directly above Line 2 subway stop at Xiang Xi which is a pedestrian street and adjacent to it is an Australian steak house that supposedly Michelle Obama ate. By the way we were surprised that the buffet place stocks large cold beer bottles, probably 500 ml or larger.

Huanglongxi Ancient Town is a bit of a drive from Chengdu, something like an hour and a half. It is not a good trip if you're not well rested, as you will do plenty of walking once you get there.
Huanglongxi is an absolutely charming place. A small stream runs through the walking street area of this lovely town. On both sides of it are sidewalks that go past traditional Sichuan shop houses that sell everything from local delicacies to more kitschy souvenir items. But that's not all. Another charm of Huanglongxi is that it sits next to 2 rivers, so there is a lot of great scenery to take in. Yes, it is a touristy place, but who doesn't want to have a stroll through this town, which is both traditional and modern at the same time. I admire the local government for being able to maintain a remarkable preservation effort of centuries-old buildings and public areas. It is a testament to how correct care for cultural heritage can have benefits for the local communities of today. Huanglongxi apparently does a thriving tourist business that depends heavily on giving the customers what they come for - a step back in time to when the local shops and not shopping malls were the focal points in one's life.
For me, the best thing about visiting Huanglongxi is to go beyond the main tourist congregation areas in the town and venture along the more quieter alleys and lanes that sit behind the town center. There, I saw people just relaxing in their shops and homes, playing Mahjong or preparing goods for sale. On those small streets, you can take slow walks and just soak in the atmosphere.
I guess many people would miss Huanglongxi because they would spend more time in Chengdu city, which is a shame. It is one of the few places in China worth going out of your way for.

We visited this village as part of a day trip. While initially it appears quaint and interesting, there were several major issues with this. First of all, I was hounded incessantly for pictures by locals, at one point we had 5 local teens following us to take pictures of me. This was bearable, what wasn't bearable was when we got towards the amusement park area, I first noticed some baby bunnies in a basket. I then noticed that these were the lucky baby bunnies, the unlucky ones were actually in tiny metal cages being used as targets for a child's amusement park game! The baby rabbits looked starved and dehydrated, most likely had not been fed at all, not to mention terrified. These were apparently also being handed out as "prizes" to children. I almost vomited at this spectacle, and as we rushed quickly away, I saw another child walking around swinging a similar cage with a terrified parakeet in it (a small, intelligent member of the Parrot family), which tells me further on they were using parrots as targets in a similar game. This is completely unacceptable, uncivilized and disgusting. I also saw shops selling tiny globe necklaces with about 1 inch of water in them and live goldfish and turtles flopping around in them, these creatures will not live more than 24 hours in these "necklaces". Come on China, you can do better than this. Stay away.

Getting there and back: There is more than one way but we took the metro (line 3) to Xinnanmen. Exit D brought us in front of the bus station. We purchased bus tickets (RMB 16 per pax) for Huanglongxi from the information counter on level 1, although you can apparently head straight for the ticketing counters on level 2. Foreigners need to use their passports for the purchase, like for any train or long-distance bus tickets. The journey took about an hour and you can purchase a return ticket (RMB 15 per pax) at the Huanglongxi bus station; the return ticket does not have a fixed time as the bus moves only after it is filled (last bus 6 pm). A local bus (from where you drop off for the bus from Chengdu; cost RMB 1) takes you on a short journey to the village entrance where the Huanglongxi hotel is. Do the reverse to get back to Chengdu.
The village main street is very commercialised, much like so many other ancient villages in China but if you move off it, then it is quite different - quieter (perhaps because we went on a weekday) and many nice teahouses lining the water edge where the Dragon and Phoenix islands are, for example, along the Xifeng corridor. For lunch, try the Yigenmian restaurant along the main street - difficult to miss as it is thronged with people; they offer non-spicy noodles and lianggao, for example.

Huanglongxi (黄龙溪镇) is a historic town located about 50 km from Chengdu, named after the Huanglong River which flows through it. The town is over 1,700 years old, and has been restored to retain its rustic charm, with ancient cobbled streets, temples, and wharves and houses along its curving alleys. Huanglongxi can be dated back to the Western Han (206 BC-24 AD). During the Three Kingdoms Period (220-280), the town was of great military importance to the south of Chengdu (the capital of Shu Kingdom).
One can take the bus from Xinnanmen Bus Station in Chengdu to Huanglongxi Ancient Town. Buses are available from 07:45 to 17:10. They depart every 30 minutes and take about ninety minutes to destination.

This ancient town was recommended by Lonely Planet China South West (2007) and I’m sure that when they issue the next edition this town won’t be in it! The town has now been “touristified” and is for the most part pretty horrendous. The guide book promised old alleys and some atmosphere. After one hour in a bone jarring mini-van, we knew it was a mistake as soon as the van stopped at what looked like the entrance to a theme park complete with new old buildings and faux trees. It got worse as we entered the "village" with every house converted to a shop and locals (we were the only foreigners) frolicking in the fake stream (real stream - fake stream bed). We eventually found some authentic old buildings and temples down near the river most of which had been converted to restaurants. You can take a boat ride on the river and can buy a water pistol if you want to join the locals in the stream. Building work for the new “old town” is still ongoing so things can only get worse. The best bit of the town was the dilapidated Gulong temple complete with old opera stage and very few tourists (1RMB). However, overall the trip was definitely not worth the effort.

We visited this place after Leshan Buddha. It’s quite a distant but worth the visit. Since you’re already in Chengdu, why not.
