Kotonin is one of the 23 temples inside the Daikokujin temple complex. It has a beautiful entrance lined with bamboo. It is famous for fall colours but unfortunately I was not there at the right season. It is still a nice temple.

This garden is a delight. Elegant simplicity in a truly peaceful setting. The site is surrounded by a bamboo 'wall'. Sitting on the temple terrace viewing the moss garden with perfectly positioned specimen trees is lovely. After that take a stroll through the rest of...More

This is a small temple and attached garden which serves tea (some of the time). It's extremely mossy and bamboo'd and has very good lighting for photography. Small entry fee but it's worth it. Unfortunately it had mosquitoes in August.

Definitely my favourite temple in all of Kyoto. It is such a peaceful space. The most beautiful, tranquil garden. Worth spending some time exploring this space.

I have been to Koto-in twice. The first time in the fall and it was serenely quiet. Then to my joy and laughter, I heard a marching band, (there must have been a high school beyond the greenery) as they practiced a John Phillips Sousa...More

majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene
artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the
bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji
