This is a true hidden gem - almost so that one would rather not unveil the bar’s existence but to keep the experience for oneself. The bar is found by stepping into a small innergarden of vegetation and following the stepping stones. The clientel is...More

It was early on a year-end Saturday night, and our last night in Japan. A favorite restaurant is next door, Gion Yata. Its miniscule upstairs bar, which is a wonderful 8-seat hideout--never seen so much attention paid to making a martini, or gracious assistance in...More

Lovely high end bar. We had an introduction from another Kyoto bartender (Mr. Watanabe at Bar Indigo...go there too). He called ahead for us. Delicious cocktails, beautiful space.

Difficult to find but excelent. Favorite with he locals. Great attention to detail in every drink. By far one of the best bars we have ever been. I urge you to give it a try. Four bartenders in the counter, that sits some 10-12 people....More

Escorted to the bar by our host in a nearby restaurant, we felt rather privileged... We were the only Westerners in the bar, on a busy weekend night. The bar, however, isn't stuffy or pretentious -- just exquisite and professional. Couldn't have asked for a...More

At a summer night in Kyoto, I was eager to drink a glass of tasty cocktail. This bar is located in Shinbashi-dori street. It's close to Tatsumi Daimyojin shrine. What a fantastic atmosphere this place produces! After shutting the sliding door at the gate, you...More

I read about this spot from Anthony Bourdain's Japan travel book: Rice, Noodle, Fish and was excited to check out this geisha / geiko bar in the Gion district. We went early enough on a weeknight where we did not need reservations, but I can...More

This place is quite hidden, although really worth it! You can make a booking in advance. A typical Japanese whisky and cocktail bar with very high level of service. You can sit at the counter or at a table. The place accomodates a max of...More

Got a 3rd party recommendation to check this place out, Let's start with it's really difficult to find, there is a small sign next to a gate (on Shinbashi-Dori, not on Yamato-Oji or Shin Monzen) down a long narrow nice alley with manicured bushes. We...More

Seeing all the good reviews, I decided to try out this bar. I'm a Westerner and suspect that I may have been denied entrance. I was told that the bar was "full," but saw two Japanese enter in front of me and one behind me....More

Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko"
