Neighbourhood: Shibuya / Harajuku / Ebisu
There are countless opportunities to shop in the Shibuya and Harajuku districts, especially in shops that focus on Japan's "Kawaii" culture. The trendiest areas are around Shibuya’s Center district, Harajuku's Takeshita-dori and in Omotesando. If you need to recharge from all the shopping, you can easily refresh yourself in Meiji Jingu or Sasaki Park. In contrast, Ebisu has a more grown up ambiance of calm and cool. At the Museum of Yebisu Beer you can learn about the beer that was responsible for the town’s name, and enjoy dining at the popular noodle shops in the surrounding area.

We spent 1.5 hours learning and trying our hand at traditional Japanese calligraphy. This is a local school where students are learning their techniques. We had an English interpreter included from the school. It’s a bit difficult to find (3rd floor of a business bldg) but magical experience! Great for teen kids.

Dear Val,
thank you very much for coming to our school and we are really glad to hear that you had a good time. As for us, we had a wonderful time as well. Not only adults but also your children were extremely eager and full energy, so much that it was contagious and left us in a great mood for the rest of the day!
Your tanzaku strips still adorn the hallway and Japanese students like to look at them and ask questions. We hope the boards will survive the trip back and should any of you want to continue practising in the States let us know, we will try to help you out.
Enjoy Japan and our doors are always open for you and your family!

It was an amazing experience! The teacher was very kind and patient with us and we loved every moment of it! I didn't dare to think that at the end of an hour I'd actually have something to put on my wall but it really did work out. Calligraphy is fun! We had complete beginners with us and also people who did try something of the kind many years ago. In the end I think it's safe to say that everyone was happy with how much he improved and that the last attempt is actually something that we can look at ;) Bonus points for great translation into Czech!

We`re really glad to hear that you had fun!
Japanese Calligraphy may seem at first like something you need to be dead serious about to even be able to approach, but as you have pointed out, that does not necessarily need to be the case.
You can have fun while remaining diligent about the pursuit of traditional values, and it is my pleasure to say that that was exactly your case.
Your group was an absolute pleasure to have around, and it was clear that you were taking the experience seriously while maintaining a playful attitude.
All the calligraphy pieces you produced were very skillfully done, especially considering the limited amount of time you had to practice, and we would definitely encourage you to try Japanese calligraphy again in the future.
We wish you all the best of luck in your further pursuits, and hope to meet you once more if you decide to visit Japan again!

They went through the history of calligraphy, the tools and how to use them, and superbly instructed on how to draw the calligraphy. The lesson was thoroughly enjoyable for the whole family and we all came out with good calligraphy board, with our own choice of katakana. Thank you Tomas and everyone else!

It truly was our pleasure to host host you and your family. All four of you were fantastic guests and we really admired your resilience, coming for the calligraphy experience despite the approaching typhoon. It`s always enjoyable to have a group of curious and enthusiastic guests, who are eager to learn and improve, and you definitely do fall into that category. Thank you for coming, and we hope you had a great time in Japan!

Dear Dan,
thank you very much for visiting us here in Tokyo!
The character that you chose to write, "æ„›," is a very complicated and challenging one, especially considering you hadn`t had any previous experience.
It was, therefore, even more impressive and surprising seeing you being able to tackle the issue and write it rather skillfully after only a handful of tries. You told us you were an artist and designer, and that might have been a contributing factor as well.
Should you choose to pursue this activity in the future, please do let us know!

The introductory lesson to calligraphy was very nice, we were told brief info about the history of kanji, a little bit about all of the tools that we were using and after that we could choose from several signs to try write the one we liked the most.
Our teacher also helped us improve the technique a bit and I signed in to their 3 months course right away, I was told it covers the basics of calligraphy so I cant wait for the lessons to start.
This was a great way to get an idea on what calligraphy is really about!
Thank you very much!

Thank you for your feedback!
We are glad that you enjoyed the experience and we are looking forward to your progress on the Way of the brush in one of our regular classes.
The character that you decided to write is one of the more symbolic ones and we recall you being able to follow the instructions and improve on your writing impressively.
Your last writing was therefore quite well done and we do hope that you end up taking the shikishi board with you back home!

Thank you! It was our pleasure to host you and your friends. Attempting to write a character in gyosho on your first try is not an easy task, yet you were able to handle it exceptionally well!
See you again in Tokyo some day!

I was lucky to enjoy individual calligraphy lesson with really nice teacher, that introduced me to the basics of calligraphy, explained about brushes and meaning of kanji characters and finally showed me how to draw the one I picked.
We talked about order of strokes and how much force to put it and I got better with every try. After five trial papers I finally draw my chosen kanji character on Shikishi and took it home.
The teacher was very nice and knowledgable and really skilled! She showed me where to focus more and where I did it right and helped me to improve quickly. It was fun and it is great to have my own calligraphy art at home! :)
Would recommend to anybody interested in calligraphy!

Thank you very much for attending!
Yours was in some ways a trial lesson, hence we are looking forward for ways to improve and enhance the experience.
And yes, there are many aspects to improve on.
Nonetheless, we are glad to hear that you had a good time and hope to meet you again in the future!
