The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.

On the way to Senso-Ji Temple or back from it.
The market is characterized by many Japanese restaurants and more in the style of take a way.
Souvenir shops for the most part and there is also a McDonald's for American meat lovers.
All around Senso-Ji Temple there are streets leading to it with a lot of Japanese street restaurants, it's worth trying and tasting different things from our "usual".
I tried the fried food with the cheese, it was excellent.
But not only about the food, the colorfulness of the street and the crowds stretching along it, part of the experience of the place.

Not far from the Senso-ji temple there is this great covered street , superb on rainy days, full of shops for shopping and for souvenirs.
You can also find excellent restaurants with prices that are not always expensive

There are many vendors offering good from home kitchenware, gifts, fresh seafood that you can eat raw on the spot and other interesting foods. I fully enjoyed the atmosphere, the people and the food. It is a must-see for sure.

The Asakusa Kaminarimondori street is a great shopping street leading from the main street from the train station to the Sensō-ji temple. It can get very crowed in the middle of the day but you can find a lot of souvenirs here. There are a lot of good food stalls here too.

A wonderful place with some many shopping options however it was very busy but to be fair we were there as a family in cherry blossom season (the end). Easy to navigate and lots of food options also.

The most visited area of Asakusa is the Kaminarimon Gateway and its shops. To avoid the crowds,, we arrived by 10:30 a.m., as the shops were opening. An hour later, the whole area was swarmed, and walking around became am obstacle course. That same day, we decided to return at night. It was a totally different perspective, beautifully illuminated, from the enormous gate and with a clear view of the stunning shrine at the end of the shops. We had the whole place to ourselves, and walking along the closed shops, we noticed each one had the most beautiful paintings on each of their rolling doors. Without the crowds, you'll be able to take amazing photos of all these, as well as the rest the absolutely gorgeous surroundings. It is a sight you'll never forget. Enjoy!

Hi & thx for reading. Was there as 2A2C(16&17 years old).

Positive
- souvenirs hunting
- while shopping, try some of the food stalls for local tidbits. One can take pictures or videos on how the products are being made
- get to see the locals in their kimonos
- Tokyo sky tree is about 10 mins walk away
- adjacent to the subway(look out for the red huge pillars)
- there’s a pretty big 2 story pharmacy that opens till late hence one can get your beauty products, snacks, drinks and other on the way home
- KFC fast-food was sighted

Negative
- not many speaks English

Conclusion
Will return for bargain and souvenir hunting plus visit the nearby shops

Tips:- bargain hunt first before you visit the pharmacy

If you find my review helpful, kindly throw in a 👍 to help encourage me further. Many thanks 😊

Asakusa Kaminarimon is one of those places one invariably visits or which someone in one’s tour group wants to visit.

Though there is a shrine present in the location in the form of the Sensoji Temple, Asakusa Kaminarimon is best remembered for the various lanes and alleys containing various shops and selling a large variety of items. Most of the shops here sell some form of souvenir or Japanese snacks but there are other stores which sells jewellery and even a pet shop. There are a lot of food options available with there being some sushi trains and ramen shops.

The comment below about this being a tourist trap is somewhat true. This place is teeming with tourists and there are some shops which are not afraid to set a high price for the service they offer. Case in point being the kimono hire (3000-4000 yens) which can be pricey when compared to other places where kimonos can be hired.

This is a popular shopping area around the temple grounds. there is both touristy stuff and some fine works available side by side. It forces one to look at each shop, don't hurry.
