The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Ueno, Asakusa
Traces of the history and culture of the Edo (old Tokyo) era remain vividly in Ueno and Asakusa. Spacious Ueno Park is a great place to relax and visit a variety of different museums and galleries. At Ameyoko which starts in front of Ueno station, the grocery stores and clothing shops are crammed alongside fishmongers. It gets particularly busy at the end of the year, when many people go on shopping sprees. The town of Asakusa, developed around Sensoji temple, has many shops selling goods and clothing from old Japan, making it a great place for souvenir hunting. It's also known for various annual festivals, and the whole district gets involved with the huge Sanja Festival in May.

Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.

What an experience! Matsumoto was a great teacher, calm, patient and very knowledgable and skilled. We learnt the history of the katana and how it’s made, then did some practice swings and before we knew it we were slicing through tatami mats like samurai!
Would highly recommend, such a great feeling when you make a clean cut. Definitely harder than he makes it look!

My wife and I took this lesson from Master Eiichi Matsumoto-San, who went into detail about the swords, history, sharpening, and the classical martial arts. After lessons and practice slashing rolled up newspapers, we were allowed to slash rolled up rice straw mats representing battlefield opponents. Having taken a samurai lesson in Kyoto this was a good follow up activity because it focused on the sword and sword battling.
As a culmination to the lesson, Master Matsumoto sliced his rolled mat 3 times in about one second. I recommend this to anyone interested in katanas.
I will remember 45 degrees Sensei.

This was a delight to attend. The instructor is very knowledgeable and helpful. Demonstrating the technique used, explaining how it was applied by the samurai and giving helpful feedback to help me get the form right. While the swords are still extremely sharp at 400 years old it was clear that safety was maintained at all times.
A fantastic experience.

Eiichi Matsomoto is a great instructor! Had a lot of fun cutting the mats! Also, their katanas are over 350 years old, so they have some history to them!

Ended up being only me in the group, so I essentially had a private samurai sword lesson. He took me through the basic grip, stance, and form. Then, I practiced with a wooden sword. From there, I was able to move on to a real sword and could slash soaked tatami mats. After cutting a full tatami mat with a normal-sized sword, there was a domonstration, where he cut a full tatami in three cuts. Really good fun and would recommend!

Matsumoto’s session is brilliant. He is extremely engaging and funny in English, and is a great teacher. Each individual gets lots of hands on time with the swords and it is certainly well worth it for 5000yen.
