We visited here, just as the wisteria had finished blooming (you can never predict these things) but it did not change how lovely the place is! It is really quiet and peaceful - with lots of lovely red curved bridges. The Shrine itself is set around a large pond which has lots of koi, turtles, and herons about - it was great! We spent some time wandering the grounds, appreciating nature, and admiring the architecture. This is a lovely place to visit and highly recommend!

It is a god of learning who goes to visit so that the examinees can pass.
The structure is similar to that of Dazaifu Tenmangu in Fukuoka.
I also visited when I took the exam.
Let's buy Kuzumochi from Funabashiya on the way home.

The wisteria was not in bloom, but the grounds are still lovely. I admit I got lost trying to find the shrine. Google maps is not that great of a help. Finally found it, and liked the peacefulness of the place. You can see the Skytree from the shrine. The trees are beautiful land there are koi and turtles in the water. You can buy amulets from the small store. I really could just sit down for 30 minutes enjoying the peace. Recommend for anyone that needs a mental break from the city.

My wife had always wanted to come here, so we went. In terms of photogenic, I think the combination with the Skytree is wonderful. There were still a few cherry blossoms left, so we were able to take photos of the torii gate and the cherry blossoms. I've heard that the wisteria is beautiful, so I'd like to return when the wisteria is in bloom.

KAMEIDO TENJINSHA
Kameido Tenjin Shrine is a shrine in Koto Ward, Tokyo that is familiar to the god of learning who enshrines Sugawara no Michizane as a deity.
It is listed as one of the 10 important Tokyo-Jissha shrines established by Emperor Meiji.
The festival held when the wisteria flowers that bloom in June are in full bloom is a famous event that symbolizes Kameido Tenjin Shrine.

Visited this place on the 4th of May 2018 mostly hoping to see the wisteria festival but were disappointed to see they had all already finished blooming and 99% of the flowers were gone apart from the odd shriveled flower here and there - Mostly only the green vines remained. A lady working there told us the main bloom happened 2 weeks earlier than usual because it was an unusually hot year.
If you want to come here this May for the wisteria, I would say it's definitely it's not worth the trip out here just for this alone.
The non-wisteria related part of this attraction is in full swing though. For me personally it wasn't worth the trip out there, just because it's not a super super 10/10 beautiful place - more like a 6/10 maybe to my eyes. But for someone else who's more into the history and religious aspect of this place, you may get more out of it than I did.

At this time of the year, the garden is just so lovely with the full bloom of wisteria. The place is within walking distance from the Skytree and it would be nice just to spend an hour with a leisure walk to admire the gorgeous flowers.

Since Kameido was included in Fukagawa Ward out of the fifteen wards of Tokyo in the Meiji era, I believe Kameido was the eastern peripheral of old Edo. We wanted to visit Kameido Tenjin Shinto shrine, which we had passed by so many times but never visited before. All I knew was that it is a popular place to visit in April to May, when the wisteria are in full bloom, and that it was the subject of many ukiyoes. It is about a fifteen minutes’ walk north west from JR Kameido Station to Kameido Tenjin. Walking north and then east on Kuramaebashi Street, still quite a few old merchant shops remain to this day, including restaurants specializing in a local dish Fukagawameshi, which is a rice dish cooked with clams and dashi soup stock. We came to the entrance gate facing Kuramaebashi Street. The shrine was much grander than I had expected. We took a moment to inspect the description by the entrance area. Tenjin originally meant the God of Thunder. But afterwards it came to mean Michizane Sugawara, a learned scholar from the 9th to 10th century. People came to pray at Tenjin shrines to pass examination tests and other academic success. The first and most prominent Tenjin shrine is in Dazaifu Tenmanguu Shintou shrine in Fukuoka. From Fukuoka, Tenjin shrines spread to all over Japan. For example, to Kyoto, where there is Kitano Tenmanguu in Kyoto City. The description tells that a priest from Dazaifu Tenmanguu carved a statue of Michizane from plum wood and dedicated it to Michizane on this site in 1662 which is how this shrine originated. It became a place for Edo folk to pray for academic success as well as to enjoy the plum and wisteria flowers. We went through the center approach to the main shrine building. The flowering period of the wisteria was over but it wasn’t hard to imagine how beautiful it must be in season with the collaboration of the flowers and the pond. Tokyo Sky Tree appeared in the back scenery. There are three bridges on the center approach. The website of the shrine tells that the first arch bridge relates to the past, the second flat bridge to the present and the third arch bridge to the future. One should purify one's thoughts as we cross the three bridges to prepare for the visit to the main shrine. We spent some time on the grounds in front of the main shrine building. On our way back taking the eastern path, we noticed quite a few plum trees of various species. A great place to explore in Tokyo, not included in many popular tours.

Apart from the shrine itself, there is the garden and the pond that are covered by the Wisteria which famous for spring season. Spring-blooming Wisteria is really beautiful. You can get the view of Tokyo skytree from here as well. Parking available. Another good place to visit in spring time for Wisteria that easy to go and locate in Tokyo. No entrance free here.

How can we get there from Keio Plaza in Shinjuku area? Is there a train that go there from Shinjuku station? How much is the taxi fare? Thanks .
Written 31 March 2017
Taxi is not recommended because traffic is quite busy in the city area. I have never tried taxi, and I cannot tell how much the fare is.
A recommendation is to take the JR Chuo Line from Sinjuku station to Tokyo station. Then take the JR Sobu Line from Tokyo to Kinshi-cho station, the station nearest to Kameido Tenjin Shrine. Kinshi-cho is just three stops from Tokyo.
It takes about 10 minutes to get to Kameido Tenjin Shirine from Kinshi-cho on foot. Google map may help to find the way. Best.
