Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Very beautiful church with magnificent frescoes
Very beautiful gilding
You must cover your shoulders and legs if you are wearing shorts, a lady at the entrance will lend you something to cover you
At the exit there is a museum (2nd)

Whether you are religious or not you will be amazed at the beauty of this traditional church. It is covered in gold and is so peaceful. A really wonderful place to reflect quietly. The greeks are very religious and you see many of them coming to kiss their saints and say their prayers. I've never in my life seen something so ornate. No matter where you look your eyes are met with art and sculpture. The ceilings are covered with beautiful paintings and when you leave you feel at peace.

We arrived just as the congregation were leaving & there was a lovely atmosphere as friends chatted. The interior is absolutely beautiful. A must see.

Spottable from afar thanks to the campanile which adjoins it, facing the sea and the ferry dock. Photos prohibited inside. Built in 1925 then rebuilt in 1948, it includes 7 bays up to the iconostasis and a semi-circular vault decorated (as well as the walls) with paintings. The choir has a culdefour vault decorated with a Virgin and Child. There is a museum at the back of the church.

This is a beautiful Cathedral, home to the island's patron saint. The atmosphere is peaceful, and the saint's tomb spectacular.
So why did I deduct marks from this review? No sooner had I lit and planted my candles (in a group with those of other family members) than a man bustled up and lined them and others all up at the edge of the sand tray, extinguishing some that had barely burnt down at all. There was no need for this, and to do it while someone is still praying is inexcusable.
It was also rather odd that the basket with modesty shawls was at the exit, not the entrance of the cathedral.

If your tired and hot after wandering around the lovely busy town that Zakynthos surely is, have a stroll to the imposing building that is the church of Agios Dionyssios, the tall bell tower is detached from the main body of the church it is easy to find just go down to the main seafront harbour road (Lombardou) and turn right, you will not fail to miss the building at the end of the harbour road. One word of advice if you're walking on the seaward side of the road it means you have to cross over, grab anything you may have of value tightly ( children wives and or girlfriends etc) and just imagine you are lined up in a 100 meter sprint final, you've got the idea, when a gap appears in the traffic it won't be there for long so make the most of it and go! There, once across have a good look at the outside before going into the church, on entering ladies will be offered a black veil to drape over their shoulders but only if they are bare ( the shoulders that is, not the ladies)! Once inside spend time to have a good look around both above, below and behind, the work detailed is amazing and of course from a religious point of view the church is held in great reverence.
Should you be fortunate enough to meet father Nikita he will tell you much about the church you will not find anywhere else, he has served this church for 60 years! also when I asked why pictures were being taken he put one hand over his eyes and said if he can't see then it's not a problem. Enough has been said on the actual contents of the church so It can be left to the individual to find
out for themselves, so if you find yourself with time to spare or even better make it one of the places to visit, lastly as you walk into the church there is a donation box for the poor so any change is always appreciated.

The church for the patron saint of the island, in Zante Town. It's ecclesiastical museum (€2; h9am-1pm & 5-9pm) contains icons from the Monastery of Strofades (home to Dionysios for several
years) and many items from an old time. Church is working and you can be part of sacramentum if you are an orthodox christians.

Monday 19th July and we visited this magnificent Church which overlooks the harbour in Zante Town
This impressive building is the largest Church on Zakynthos. On the 17th December is the Feast Day of Agios Dionysios, Patron Saint, and Protector of the island.
No photography is permitted inside the Church, so this review is a very poor attempt to describe the spectacular and grandure of the interior.
Before we entered the Church we had no idea what to expect, we should have had some inkling what to expect having seen the magnificent gilded paintings above the entrance.
The interior is filled with so many icons, paintings, marble columns all under the many large chandeliers, which hang from the decorated ceiling. Our eyes danced around from one side of the Church to the other trying to see everything, far too much to absorb.
The amazing combination of the richness of the red velvet seats, the bright gold leaf which is generously applied throughout the Church and stained glass windows, is a spectacle to behold.
The ancient and precious relics of Agios Dionysios are housed in this most sacred place.
It took 23 years to build the Church which began in 1925 and completed 1948. It is regarded as miraculous as the recently completed Church was unscathed during the devastating earthquake of 1953.
Outside of the Church there are two bust statues of former Bishops, by the main entrance, Bishop Dionysios Plaisas and Bishop Chrysostomos. Along the side of the Church there is another bronze bust of Saint Theodoros the Martyr.

When do you open the casket of St. Dionysios so we can see him and say prayers?
Do we need to make any special arrangements?
We are coming August 31-September 6.
Written 8 August 2019
You should write the church directly and ask. When I was there, there was just a volunteer making sure everything was tidy (and watching visitors!)

Coming from the USA with my family to light a candle for my mother who is sadly coming to the end of her life. Wish to know when church is open and what times is the tomb of the Saint usually opened to allow visitors to pray to him?

who's smart idea was it to put St Dennis church on trip advisor ?
Written 21 August 2017
It's great having this on trip advisor as it can help us planning trips to know what's there to see! St Dionysius is the patron Saint if Zakynthos and also the Patron saint of forgiveness. His story is amazing! I understand why you might not think it should be on trip advisor as it is a Holy place and should not be negatively reviewed but great to know its there to see!
