Good hike to two different interesting viewpoints. The first destination is uphill to see grain stores which are slightly awkward to see as they are tucked out of sight just under the top of the hill but only a few steps from the path The second viewpoint is higher than the first with a difficult step up to get on... Great Trail!! seamed a bit daunting looking up when you came to the base of the butte, and as you go up you may think "how am I getting down?" but keep going, it looks much worse than it is! And this is coming from someone deathly afraid of the edge! The top has amazing views, and was super secluded... More

Island in the Sky has very limited parking available at trailheads to more popular hikes here, but this one had lots of parking so we did it. Butte has nice views, solitude - strong knees and legs are required for getting up to and over the tricky, rocky ledge, but then you're up. Be sure to visit the ancient Indian... More

I liked this hike very much. First of all: there are not many people on the trail Second: you have to climb, which is challenging. Third: your reward is a panoramic view. I don't recommend this hike to people with a fear of heights.

Half of the group hiked to the top. Good shoes are a must. You are hiking up a slippery solid granite slab. The 13 year old was pumped that he could climb this. His 10 year old sister wisely did not try and stayed half way down in the shade with her mom and Aunt whose shoes were to slick... More

This is a short hike that can be done within an hour round trip. Quite interesting history behind it as well.

This is a quick hike to get warmed up when you arrive at Island in the Sky. Just two miles round trip to the top of Aztec Butte. This is the highest spot at Island in the Sky so enjoy the view. The Taylor Canyon is seen from the top. There is also a short spur that leads to Puebloan... More

When we arrived at this trailhead, we were the only vehicle there. It only took us about 20-25min to get to the top of the larger butte. The views from up there were incredible! The trail looks intimidating, but in practice it was not too difficult a climb. It is not one I would recommend in inclement weather, however. We... More

This hike is not for the faint of heart! It is not long, but is in full sun, so keep that in mind on a hot desert day. The hike up the butte is really a rock scramble - you will be using both hands as you scramble up and your rear as you slide back down! Wear shoes with... More

Loved this hike! Follow the cairns up the steep incline of the slick rock of Aztec Butte for a gorgeous view. It's fairly easy to get up, but it's the coming down part that usually makes me nervous on steep inclines. However, the rock is like sandpaper and the way down was actually pretty easy. The lower butte is a... More
