With the adjacent Carlsbad Caverns closed (due to the then Government shut down), we were left to find our own adventure at the National Park (NP). We found and drove the 9.5 mile desert loop, which starts near the NP visitor center. It is free...More

This was the highlight of our trip as the ride was breath taking. A free 10 mile loop that allows you to see the wild life and the scenery which was beautiful. It took longer then it should have but we saw Deer and Big...More

This is a very nice drive, if you are interested in desert flora and fauna. It is a graveled road, but is OK for a car. We like it.

Breath taking scenery on this meandering trail. Definitely worth the drive. If at all possible use an AWD.

After hiking around the caverns but before watching the bat flight, we decided to get out of the crowds and take a quick drive down the Walnut Canyon road. We were easily able to do this in our Prius in October, but it may not...More

This is a wonderful off road experience. You could probably do it after the caverns. We started probably 1 hr before sunset. It's 9.5 miles that starts near the visitor center and meets down the mountain. You can stop off at rattlesnake canyon. The sunset...More

We enjoyed the drive but it is an activity to do if you are done with the cavern activities which are higher priority. Do ask at the information desk for a guide to the drive. It will make your time more meaningful. It includes plant,...More

Walnut Canyon Loop Drive is a nice 9.5 mile loop drive that starts near the CCNP visitor center. It is gravel, so you need to go slow. There is some interesting, though not dramatic, landscape and the flora is interesting if you are not from...More

If you are waiting for the bat flight program to begin this is the perfect place to kill some time. The scenery is nice, but the best part may be the seclusion and quiet. Make sure you get the guidebook/pamphlet for the drive.
