Walking in thick sand is harder than it looks. And distances are deceiving. The dunes look close, but we walked over a mike in each direction. Walking along the crests of the dunes fill,ed our shoes with sand. I thought my feet had swollen, because my toes were cramped in my shoes. I got blisters on my feet because my... More

The dunes are spread out enough so even if there are a lot of people there you can still get that wonderful feeling of being "out there."The best lunch place nearby is at the Saloon in Stovepipe Wells, just up the hill.

No trail to follow, just explore these magnificent high dunes on your own. It's pretty challenging to climb up the steep, sandy incline, but you'll be rewarded with breathtaking views, a gentle breeze, and peaceful quiet.

The dunes stretch out from the road for more than a mile offering visitors the opportunity to go their own way wandering in between and over the sand. The views up close of the wind textured surface of the dunes is interesting as are the lengthy vistas of the miles-away mountains ringing the valley. If the sun isn't too hot,... More

Even if you do not leave the parking lot you can enjoy the view of the sand dunes. If you want a little more adventure, walk out to the dunes and get some exercise as you walk up a ridge line of a sand dune. Don't skip the nearby Mosaic Canyon!

do the hike up the dunes before sunrise to enjoy a magnificent experience. Watch the sun come up and paint the dunes, enjoy the peace and quiet and surround yourself in nature.

In a hot day the sand is really hot... almost burning your feet. But anyhow it's really beautiful place and definitely worth a detour. It wasn't that crowded in late April.

The mesquite dunes are naturally beautiful place in Death Valley and a refreshing change of venue from the expanses of rocks and hardened desert floor. We enjoyed walking out on them and seeing tiny animal tracks in the sand, animal burrows and various kinds of desert vegetation. It's a good stop to combine with Stovepipe Wells and Marble Canyon which... More

Sunrise or sunset, the dunes envelope you into a world of quiet, while inviting you to take off your shoes and walk barefoot feeling the smooth sensations as the sun warms you. Always changing by the winds a visit to the dunes is new each time , with soft curves, broad ridges and beckoning peaks enticing you walk further into... More

These dunes are very nice in that they are localized in a smaller area by a couple of mountain features. the view out at a distance, even the road, is probably the best part. Walking on the dunes is nice, and you can see various vegetation and potential wildlife habitats, but the foot traffic is so heavy that the ripple... More
