The Hopi House is a tourist creation dating to the building up of the Grand Canyon South Rim. While attempting to mimic Native American structures, it's a tourist-related creation. I'm being awfully negative, huh? Sorry. This is a rock structure meant to look a bit like a Pueblo. Mostly it looks like a rock building. Inside is a gift shop with a lot of Native American items. If you're into gift shops go. If you're into history and culture, don't.

Located between El Tovar Hotel and Verkamp's Curios (see separate reviews). this is another of the historic building designed by Mary Colter in the Grand Canyon.
Built in 1905, it was intended to resemble a Hopi pueblo. Originally, it was intended to be a sort of living museum, in which the Hopi people could live while making and selling traditional crafts. Although there have been no Hopi living here for many years, the buidling itself is impressive, and the gift shop is comprehensive.
Although not cheap, the quality of the items in this shop was great, and I thought that the selection of everything (from Native American goods to typical touristy items - postcards, shot glasses, etc.), was better here than in the other stores in the Grand Canyon (and the prices were no higher here than elsewehere in the Park).
Hint: Be careful walking around in the building as the floor slopes and the doors are very low.

My family and I visited Hopi house today and found several gifts that we wanted to purchase. Rather than carry them around while we hiked, we asked a salesperson what time the store closed, which was 5:00pm. Due to riding the park buses we were cutting it close to making it back to Hopi house so we got off the bus and hurried to make it before closing time. With 9 minutes to spare, one of the sales people closed and locked the door. I waited and he opened the door and let a few people out. I asked if we could come in and make our purchase. He said "no, we are closed, it's been a long day" I explained our situation and said we knew exactly what we wanted to buy and that we could get it done before 5. He said "when you have your own Hopi house, you can choose when to close" and then shut the door in our face. I am so disappointed that someone at this gorgeous national park would treat us this way, especially when we were trying to do business with them. I highly recommend that if you want Native American gifts that you buy them anywhere but here.

Hopi House is a wonderful place to see Native American architecture and to purchase authentic crafts. All of the crafts are labeled with information regarding origin, etc. How nice to be assured what you purchase is genuine.

Hopi House is a must see gallery and store for its history, for the unsurpassed collection of native handiwork on display and on sale, and the great job it does imparting information about native artforms through the good use of signage and labeling.

If you like to shop, enjoy history and authentic items, then visit the Hopi House. The shop is a historic building designed by Mary Colter and interesting to see. It also houses beautiful native items and definitely worth one taking a look.

PROS: easy walk from the rim lodges; beautiful architecture; beautiful artwork and sculptures scattered throughout the house; as one reviewer mentioned, the items are very expensive; we saw less expensive jewelry using rarer local stones still made by native Americans near Las Vegas.
CONS: can get pretty tight inside; watch overhead as the ceilings are low in some areas of the house.

While it is touted to be a museum and exhibit of Native American crafted items, it is really an overpriced Native American Gift shop. Many of the items in the Hopi House are beautiful and nicely done, but be prepared for the "sticker shock" when you see the prices. It is worth a walk through, but you need to win the lottery to afford some of the items.

Do drop in and browse the merchandise when you are at the south rim of the Grand Canyon. Not a paramount inventory, but some nice pots and blankets.
